Actually, the character animation in Kiki is much more expressive and interesting than The Nightmare Before Christmas. The flight scenes, crowd scenes, and facial expressions are particularly noteworthy, especially given the tiny budget involved. I find the animation in all of Miyazaki's works, particularly Kiki, to be reminiscent of Old Disney. Of course, I'm not much of a fan of stop-motion or Tim Burton, so I guess I'm a bit biased.
