Mermaid is the best!
Of all the Disney films The Little Mermaid is my favourite. When I was three my first copy blew up (metaphorically of coarse) and because it wasn't out we copied it. When it did come out again in 1999 my Dad was like 'Oh you have the copy' so naturally my Video broke again and I spent twelve months looking for it and finally found it for twenty dollars in my local video shop who had found it in a box of back up sets of some of there most frequentlt rented movies (I'm just glad they sold it to me). I can't wait for the DVD (It will be kept in a glass cabnet (or a safe!)) once I get it to ensure it never breaks on me again (even DVDs can get damaged). I love Mermaid and wish I could just have it now (even though I still love Lady and the Tramp and Cinderella) but I suppose the wait will just make finally getting it on DVD that much more enjoyable (it will be like YES FINALLY! and I'll have to watch it like fifty times just to get over my excitment). The only thing I'm wondering is will there be anyting added to the film. There is actually a rumour going around that there will be. But luckily the DVD will have the theatrical version option that I can watch (after 16 years of watching it the same way I don't think I really want it to change so I'll just watch the original). Neway g2g but just thought I'd put my stake it.

The Little Mermaid is coming out after Lady and the Tramp
Wow, that's really sad how your videos kept blowing up! No wonder your really anxious for the DVD and want it kept safe! It is going to be a long wait for The Little Mermaid but it will be sooo worth it! I have a feeling they'll really make this Platinum special. It's even getting it's own "Little Mermaid Reflections" DVD that we don't know anything about!
And I heard that the scene they're thinking of adding is the shark that Ariel traps in an anchor near the beginning of the movie will chase Ariel to the wedding ship where she needs to stop Prince Eric from marrying Vanessa! The shark's name is Glut, by the way! I hope for this scene to make it in the DVD!

I think the most you wait for something, the most you enjoy it; and this would apply tho the little mermaid dvd very well.
I´ve always said that, though Mermaid would make such a great platinum title, Bambi and Cinderella deserved it to come first, that just fair, Mermaid was on dvd once already...

If it were up to me, I would put out 3-4 of those platinum editions a year instead of 2. I'm sure there are lots of good reasons for doing just 2 a year, but I'm just saying if it were up to me . . . .
Buffy: We have a marching jazz band?
Oz: Yeah, but, you know, since the best jazz is improvisational, we'd be going off in all directions, banging into floats... scary.

I'm just happy they started releasing two a year instead of just every October. I wonder if we're going to get a little cover peek at the mermaid cover after Cinderella is released. After Bambi was released that Lady & The Tramp test cover was posted on the site here. I hope so before this year is out we get something to keep us in anticipation. I can't wait till a trailer is put out too. I know that's not going to be for awhile though.

The added scene and 'reflections' featurette
I did hear that the Shark chase scene would be the new addition to the Little Mermaid Platinum Edition but I have to be honest I don't think it's needed. Sometimes it works for Disney (like in the Beauty and the Beast SE) but sometimes it just goes horribly wrong (like in The Lion King SE). The scene sounds like it could be really cool but as I said before I do love the film just the way it is and I will most likely choose to watch the theatrical version on the DVD rather than the Special Edition version. I am intrigued however about this new 'Little Mermaid reflections' feature that will be on the DVD since Disney has never had something like it as a bonus feature before. It should be really worth having a look at once the DVD is out.

From the title, it's obviously a replacement for Part of Your World. Disney won't replace such a crutical scene. I doubt we'll be getting an extra scene, since only the movies that were touched up for IMAX got one (Pocahontas excluded, since it was nearly finished anyway).

I'm really disappointed they aren't releasing it until '06. My daughter is 2 and started watching it and loves it. I don't want to wear out our VHS copy of it, and I don't fancy a bidding war on ebay to get the DVD.
That said - if I do decide to go to ebay for that or any other OOP DVDs - what's the best way to keep from getting ripped off and knowing it's an authentic original? Sorry don't want to hijack this LM thread so feel free to move this if needed.

Actually, from what I remember, "Sunshine Only Shines On Land" was to take place after Triton blows up her treasure trove, right before Flotsam and Jetsam come in.DisneyFan 2000 wrote:From the title, it's obviously a replacement for Part of Your World. Disney won't replace such a crutical scene.
And the shark chase scene that's talked about was to take place when Flounder was tugging Ariel to the wedding ship. I don't think the shark scene would seem right though. I'm pretty sure a shark could kill them easily that way. Though the song sounds like it would fit in pretty fine (to me anyway).

More on the DVD
I'm happy with whatever they choose to add to the film but it feels like both the Shark chase and 'Sunshine shines only on land' are repetitive of what we see previously in the film. The shark chase will feel like it's repeating what we saw at the beginning of the film in the sunken ship and 'Sunshine shines only on land' (judging from where it belongs) would feel like it's trying to compete with 'Part of your World' (like one song is trying to beat the other). That's just my opinion but I truely feel the film doesn't need anything added to it.

Well, I would just see it as a second reprise of an already good song. I think it would bring the pace down, especially since the scene after is when Flatsom and Jetsome come to "comfort" Ariel. And the shark scene? Totally a waste of time if you ask me... No need to repeat a shark chase sequence in the movie in my opinion.Disney's Divinity wrote:Though the song sounds like it would fit in pretty fine (to me anyway).
