Little Mermaid DVD aspect ratio?

Post by Wonderlicious »

Okay, I clicked on the link that hennie gave in the So Dear to My Heart thread and started browsing the website. I clicked on Classics and discovered that apparently, in Holland, The Little Mermaid came out in Pan and Scan:

I found this quite odd, as I thought that The Little Mermaid would have come out in non-anamorphic widescreen as opposed to the silly fullscreen, as I was certain that the UK edition was widescreen due to the fact that it states so on Amazon. I then remembered seeing this in an old thread:
The R1 "Limited Issue" release looks fine to me (the kids watched it 3x in a row yesterday!)

I also have the full-frame (P&S?) R2 edition of LITTLE MERMAID which has the Peter Andre song at the end! I rarely watch that one, though, as I prefer to stick to the widescreen releases for my widescreen telly.

I was shocked about this. In the terrifying chance that the Mermaid SE is the touched up version that was going to be put out on IMAX and not the original theatrical cut, I would be interested in going on an E-Bay hunt for the old Limited Issue, and I would like to know if the shocking truth is that the Region 2 Limited Issue for this movie is like the one for Lady and the Tramp.

Thanks! :)

It will most likely be the touched up version. They're supposedly going to fix certain weird facual expressions Ariel had. Personally, I don't mind since I have the original on my computer and I loved the way they cleaned up The Lion King, Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast. :)

Well I'm 99.9% sure that the Little Mermaid was never actually touched up for IMAX, there were plans to do it yes, but after the flop tacular nature of Beauty and the Beast in 2001/2002 and then the Lion King flop of 2003, I don't think they ever did actually get as far as touching it up, I know they did with Al, but not with merm, I may be wrong though. Also If the Dutch version of The Little Mermaid was Pan and scan, the UK one probably is too as those old warner discs had loads of different languages on them so that they could be released in multiple countries. You have to find someone who had it though to be sure.

According to DVD Compare the R2 and R4 editions are in 1.66:1, not pan and scan.
