Too much fun w/ OOAK Barbies

Post by Sunset Girl »

This is what happens when I get a little too obsessed with customizing things. . .

Here is my first attempt at creating a one-of-a-kind Barbie. Well actually, she's not an official Barbie but was a homely, cheap knock-off I paid three bucks for at Family Dollar. I liked the shape of her face and thought I'd try to adapt her into my character Amethyst. I'm not quite done with her yet; I still need to order more hair so I can fill in the bald spots before I can give her bangs and her signature pony tail.

But she's gone through a complete re-root (her orginal hair was a really fake and ugly red) and I've totally reshaped her eyes and lips with a repaint. I still have to touch that up a bit and sew her superhero-esque costume, but I'm having a lot of fun and wanted to show her off thus far.

I'm thinking of doing some Disney and anime-type Barbies after I get the hang of this, and thanks to Paka and Siren, I'd also like to attempt some Disney and anime-themed My Little Ponies.

Awesome job, especially considering what you had to work with!

I remember we bought my cat one of those dollar store "Barbies" when she was a baby and she loved it. I think the doll's feet had been chewed down to stumps within the first week!

Thanks for the compliments, guys! :)

Even though she isn't quite finished, I decided to make a new avatar from her.

Thanks! Purple's my favorite color, and amethyst happens to be my birthstone. :)

Ooh, do you have any pics of that Lady Amalthea doll of yours that you could post here? She's gotta be one of the most gorgeous characters ever and I've actually thought about attempting to make a doll of her; maybe out of a Jenny doll? She reminds me a little of Maetel from Galaxy Express because of her design.

Well, wanting to try selling some on eBay was my excuse to get started with all this.

To answer the question in your other post, yeah, I'm actually planning on doing some Sailor Moon repaints and such, since I've never really liked the way they do the eyes. I'm tempted to make a custom Saturn doll out of another senshi because I know it could fetch a lot of money (even an official Saturn doll is very rare and gets a good price).

I'd also like to make a Miaka doll (from Fushigi Yugi) and maybe some Rayearth and Utena ones. Oh, and I have to make one of Nadia!

I also want to attempt Ariel; I've never really liked the face that Mattel gives her. The same with Tink.

The hair-rooting isn't as hard as it looks, but depending on which method you choose it can get pretty time-consuming.

Guess I should get busy.
