The Gold Collection Will Go Away

Post by Porce »

I found "The Sword in the Stone" on DVD today for $12.99 at Costco. But I decided to pass it up, because ever since I saw the DVD release schedule I think that all of the Gold Collection titles are going to be re-released. Disney has been trying to forget about the Gold Collection since early 2002. Really, they are even re-releasing Pocahontas 2 in a special edition. That is a Gold Collection title. Pinocchio is going to be re-released as a Platinum. Alice in Wonderland, Mary Poppins, and Pocahontas will all be re-released into Special Editions in 2004. There was a 2-Disc Collector's Edition of The Hunchback of Notre Dame rumored before its original release.

So I believe that Disney is slowly doing to the Gold Collection what they did to the Limited Issue line. They have already discontinued Mulan and Pinocchio, so they are "vaulted." I bet that they will continue to do so in the future.

I don't think it's realistic to expect Disney to revisit every title in the Gold Collection, but they've certainly phased that line out. The last release was sometime in the summer of 2001 I think.

It seems that many of the Gold Collection DVD's have price reductions, or at least are less expensive than others. I keep finding many of the Gold Collections at Walmart and others for 15.00.

Then again, some i can;t find at all in stores.

The day I see a Aristocats or Black Cauldron 2-disc will be the day Disney finally go nuts.

Disney have always been strange about their colletions?? I don't understand them at all. DO they think they sell better if they change the layout ALL the time?? I wonder how long the Platinum collection will stay???

A 2 disc collection of The Black Couldron would be GREAT, one of my favorite movies :D :D

Based on collection discontinues & renames thus far, I predict that Disney will shut off the Platinum Edition line in 3 years, and start releasing the planned DVDs under the alternating banner of "Silver Edition" or "Copper Edition".

It certainly would be fitting, as the first Platinum was better than the second one... (I hope Lion King is not a disappointment.)

The reason that Disney didnt make 2-disc DVDs out of certain movies are that there is a lack of DVD special features for the movie. all the movies released as a Gold Collection show that the film is not one of Disney's best and also that there is a lack of special features on the disc. i cant imagine Pocahantas 2 being a special edition. how could Disney treat their sequels like that.

Er.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas Special Edition (only supplement of note - new 'pop' music video)

Beauty and the Beast: Belle's Magical World Special Edition (no supplement of note - but I feel the Special Edition tag is due to the reinsertion of Mrs Pott's Party (or whatever it was))

Thanks MMB - that really made me laugh!

As regards to materials for 2 disc releases Uncle Remus have you got the Behind the Scenes Disney Treasures set? That shows the Disney archive (or morge as it is known) and Disney have a ton of materials for everything. So that will cover galleries - as for other supplements they keep all pencil tests and retrospective documentaries can always be filmed if no archive footage exists.

There's no excuse for any Disney Animated film not having a 2 disc release.

I think that ALL movies should have a 2-disc release if they can. Or just widescreen at least.

Still, I can hardly believe that Beauty and the Beast 2 and 3 got Special Edition when Cinderella hasn't even been released yet... :(

this has probably been asked before but- why are newer releases like 20000 leagues, love bug, apple dumpling gang, labelled as special editions and not vault disney's? the special features take you into the vault just like the original 4 vault titles. i thought that was a great idea for a series of dvds cause it makes the purchase more special. feels like you own something that's been locked away. but even though the special editions have great stuff on them, labelling them special editions makes them just like any other ordinary non-disney dvd special editions. not as fun if you ask me. anybody know?

Apparently, the Vault Disney line didn't sell enormously well, so Disney decided to discontinue the line and just start calling them Special Editions instead. Stupid idea, I know - especially when you consider they didn't even put any effort into marketing the line in the first place.

vault/special

that is really stupid cause no they didn't promote the original set and surprise surprise, they haven't really been promoting the special editions either. they have a chance to really connect with their consumers because the quality of their products is so great. but they don't seem to get customer relations.
