DVD Region differences

Post by WKS1979 »

I am in agreement with disneychris04 about the bad DVDs in Asia. I'm in Malaysia and also in R3 but we get different versions of DVDs in each and every country in this region (yes...even as close as Singapore there are differences)

I haven't checked out all the available Disney DVDs available locally cause each and every DVD store here carries R1, R3 and Region free DVDs so I usually get mixed up. I can easily pickup Toy Story R1 or R3 so I would have to look carefully before buying to determine which version I bought

Here are some which I know of though

1. Beauty and the Beast (SINGLE Disc :x with a few extras....no theatrical or WIP versions)
2. Sleeping Beaty (Single disc, widescreen though with extras)
3. Atlantis (Collectors edition double disc with premium)
4. Snow White (SE double disc with premium)
5. Finding Nemo (Double disc)
6. Lion King (Double Disc)
7. Robin Hood, Tarzan, Dinosaur, Toy Story 1& 2, (Single disc....but released as budget editions for about USD$9.00)
8. Fantasia 2000 (single disc....unconfirmed extras)
9. Monsters Inc (Double disc CE)
10. Brother Bear (Single disc widescreen with unconfirmed extras)

I COMPLETELY agree with you. I have about 95% of the disney classics animation on DVD from HK. They are all R3. I must agree, the releases in HK Sink! The only reason I got them is for the Cantonese audio for my nephews and nieces.
They freaking charge the same amount as a US release, rought US$20 a piece from yesasia.com, but lack the additional/special features you would like to have for the price.
I want to add one for more thing.
For the R3 TheFox and the Hound DVD, part of the dvd was not even translated into Cantonese. The section where the old lady took the fox away into the woods. These lazy basters! They need to check their quality.
What ever happen to Piglet's Big Movie dubbed into Cantonese. They only have it in Mandarin and English. Where's Bambi?
I was very disappointed when I got the so-called Special Edition" Sleeping Beauty. It was a single disk :(
It's terrible how poor of a quality these IVL releases are. I just hope they can get their act together soon. Yet, it's hard to complain since they are the ONLY distributor of disney DVD in HK. ( I guess I 'll just have to suck it up and pay up for their poor quality of work!

5. The Fox and the Hound, Pocahontas (zero extras)

Sometimes the Asian Releases have something that is absent on the US versions.

For example the Taiwan releases of Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc and Lion King were all 2 disc special editions with DTS that was not found on the US region 1 version.

But the Taiwan version of Brother Bear was only one disc, and the aspect ratio was altered. Instead of starting at 1.66 the changing to 2.35 like the US version, the Taiwan version stayed in 1.66 through the whole film. So basically over 50% of the movie is in a 1.66 Pan and Scan presentation :(

Dear all friends.

Here is a page I have made for a reference for 'Walt Disney Classics' Region Code 3 - Thailand which you may find some info for your collection.

I do want to share this list if it can help some of us 'Disney DVD Lover' here.

Open for comment.
