Wizard of OZ

I got this crazy idea during play pratice, I was looking at our play's script Wizard of OZ and I realized that the book would be the perfect Disney animated film course they would stir away from the famous Judy Garland film and define the characters then MGM did back in 1939, I would cast: Anne Hathaway or Christy Carlson Romano as Dorthey, Dick Van Dyke as the Wizard, Debbie Reynolds as Aunt Em, Patrick Stewart as Uncle Henry, Nathlan Lane or Toby Magiure as Scarecrow, Peter Behn as Tinman, Eartha Kitt as Wicked Witch, Mike Myers as Lion, and Julie Andrews as Glinda. You come up how this possible movie idea would work for a animated feature.

I, too, always thought Oz would be perfect for Disney, particularly if they stick to the book closer than the MGM film. Since a live action film would draw too many comparisons to that version, I think Disney should do an animated one. They could promote it as a story everyone thinks they knows in a way never before seen.

Well The Wizard of Oz, Muppet style is coming out soon or sometime this year I hear. Hopefully that will make some of us happy lol.

Got a point Disneykid, and it's been said that Walt was considering adapting the book to the animated screen before or after Snow White, but he couldn't figure out how he would bring his magic to the story's beloved characters and settings too. So I guess Wizard of OZ would be a huge and phemonal box-office smash hit for Disney for about 7 years if they were releasing it to today's generation.

I heard bout the Muppets doing OZ and that has me worried, judging by the photos the film looks kinda strange but it does seem interesting to watch. I just hope they don't ruin the story. We still haven't seen a photo of Miss Gulch or the witch, not even a photo of Glinda.

Great! Which muppet plays Beecher? Which one plays the Minister Said? Or how about Keller or Schillinger or O'Reilly? What about Warden Glynn or McManus? Since there are so many muppets, the possibilities are endless !

To be honest I didn't get the point of that comment. I should've pitched this idea durning my trip to the studios. *chuckles* course it was swimming in my mind but I never thought of pitching it to Bruce Wright, a computer effect animator.

Apparently, you've never seen the HBO show called Oz... I HIGHLY recommend it, although it is definitely NOT Disney in any way, shape, or form.

I see, well I don't get HBO here course I heard bout that show and some good things bout it. How would you guys have Lion animated, same style as Lion King's animals, standing on hind legs (like Bert Lahr) or walk on all four legs, how bout the double roles: Farmhands/Scarecrow,Lion, Tinman. Should they do that or just make them seprate people.

the MGM Wizard of Oz has become way too famous and too much of a classic for it to become a Disney animated feature (even if they do base it on the book) it would have to be really really well done with really really memorable songs for it to hold up against the Judy Garland version AND the other Disney animated classics. but t is possible though, look at Beauty and the Beast.

Miss Gulch was created for the MGM version of The Wizard of Oz which, despite the common belief, is NOT the original version.

Miss Gulch: That's very clever of MGM to pull a stunt like that, cause I always thought that she was part of the oringal story, it's been awhile since I've read the real story of Wizard of OZ. I'm surspise that they pulled it off without wrecking the story's real plot, you just don't see tricks like those anymore these days.

Miss Gulch was pure MGM fabrication (probably partly created so Margaret Hamilton could play one of her cranky old ladies which were a specialty of hers).

RETURN TO OZ in 1985 was the closest I think Disney will ever come to doing an 'Oz' movie (a movie which is either a masterpiece or a pile of crap depending on which camp you belong to - I'm with the former).

I remember Disney doing a sequal to OZ but it's been awhile since I've seen Return to OZ, I can see the company straying away from the MGM/ Muppet twist and go close to the book cause then it would be really different experience for the audience, and for the songs instead of the If I only had" Songs, Disney would put songs that defines a character or moves the plot forward, Walt would probaly take this time to produce Wizard of OZ as animated feature since we have better qualities for a story like OZ.

Classic Hollywood used to this wonderfully especially the Disney movies, but lately fans have become too irritable and closed minded that any kind of change to their beloved stories are deemed blasphemus and unforgivable just look at how they received the 3rd Potter film you just don't get great unique adaptations the way WoOz or theisney films did anymore.

Since we're tossing around "what ifs," how about this idea? Disney and MGM get together and make a gorgeously animated (using classic animation, not CGI) version (not remake) of the MGM Judy Garland masterpiece? It would be very easy to take ALL the vocals from the original film and use them for animation! Think of what an incredible hit this would be!
