I heard that Fantasia was cut. Is that true?

Since Disney seems to be getting bolder with releasing "offensive" material, maybe the Platinum Edition of Fantasia will be completely uncut. Well, here's hoping anyways

Lets all pray this will be the case. Maybe if the responses for Song of the South release aren't too harsh, we might see more uncut versions? I hope so. While it may not take away from the overall feel of the film, it makes me feel I'm missing out on something!

Well, it's up to us, the real Disney fans to show that we want this stuff in it's original form. We have to be supportive of whatever comes out as unedited (That's not to say go out and buy a movie that you hate, but just be positive about the fact that it's unedited). The sales for the Treaures are quite well (as can be evidenced by the fact that I'm having extreme troubles finding Wave 2 Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr), and we should strive to keep them that way.

Conversly, we shouldn't support edited DVD's such as Fantasia and Melody Time. I know that many of you want these movies, but if you buy them all Disney will see are the sales numbers, not your reasons for buying it and your objections to the edits.

In this regard, I will completely support Song of the South as long as it isn't edited in any way. If it is, I will pass it up in protest. Lets show Disney what the fans really want, The Original Animated and Live Action Classics.
Cheers!

What was cut from Fantasia? I am old enough to remember when I first saw it in the theater, and I didn't notice any cuts from what I saw. Please explain.

I've heard many times that Fantasia, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty will get their own Platinum Editions in the future, but is it already confirmed?

Well, during the Pastoral sequence in Fantasia, a black centaurette named Sunflower was cut from the film. The scenes of close ups of several different centaurettes looks grainy because it is zoomed in, leaving out any trace of Sunflower.

If you look at the website shown above, you'll see what I mean.

It hasn't been officially confirmed, in that no public announcement has been made. However, my understanding is that Eisner announced that Fantasia, Peter Pan, Sleeping Beauty, and Pinnochio would be added to the line up at the same time he announced that the Platinums would be upped to 2 a year. I believe this was at a shareholders meeting or something similar. Maybe Luke can clear this bit up
Cheers!

Another cut?

Post by bmadigan »

Is there another cut in the pastoral scene? I haven't seen Fantasia in a while, but the last few times, I remeber a rather abrupt transition during the storm scene during the part where Bachus' vat of wine gets destroyed.

Is it just me? Or is there a cut there and why?

I did have Fantasia when I was little, and I looked through the Disney VHS tapes we have, and we still have it!!! I'm excited, I want to watch it!

I do remember enjoying it A LOT, the only part I didn't like much was the Mickey / sorcerer sequence.

I remember the centaurs, the ballerina hippos and ostriches ... I know there's something I'm missing that I really love. I loved most of it.

I didn't like Fantasia 2000 though.

I would indeed like to see a version as original as possible. But the one we got is far from messed up.

It's part of the picture that Fantasia has changed shapes over the years (decades) and the one available on DVD is probably the best rerelease ever. The thing about it that's least good might be Deems Taylor's voice substitute.

WHAT?!! How could you not like that classic Mickey short?! This is Mickey at his finest! It's the only part of Fantasia that I will watch, the rest is just kind of boring. I'm really glad I don't have to buy the Fantasia DVD just for this one sequence (although, I would if I had to)

Of course, you are entitled to your own opinion on the matter. But still......
