A Chris Buck feature and King of the Elves are also moving briskly along.

Animators practicing the hand-drawn version of the craft are now doing test footage of characters in 2-D versions, although the characters will ultimately be rendered and executed as C.G. when the films are in production. An animator related:

"This is a way for directors to see how the characters move and act before the c.g. versions are built. We can get footage out faster for test purposes."

I got to look at some tests. It will be interesting to see the same characters in their computer graphic mode.

The 2D tests are extremely informative and inspirational for the CG crew. Glen did some similar tests for Tangled. I think it's very valuable and collaborative.

Fandom seems to believe the feature is "The Snow Queen" and it's CGI.

The Snow Queen is dead.

A nice list of what's coming next is over at Blue Sky Disney, although they don't give names of the last few, they seem to be correct in what is coming and who is directing them.

So, is Chris Buck really directing the CG Snow Queen? But it doesn't add up. When the hand-drawn Snow Queen got shelved, Chris Buck went to work on another CGI film. Did that project fell through and then he got the CG Snow Queen gig?

Yes. That film got scrapped because two other studios are making similar films, Tangled made fairy tales hot again, and a CG Snow Queen will look awesome.

How is the film being CG make it any better than it would have been in 2D? You mean, just because it's in CG, it wouldn't be "more of the same" even though the last CG film they had was also a fairy tale?

Being CG, and being done by I can only assume (but maybe Im jumping the gun here?) by largely the same team as Tangled, I think we could expect the same quality, animation wise at least. Story is anyone's guess. Disney's CGI usually builds off what they learned on the last one. And they learned a lot while working on Tangled with Glen Keane in terms of distortion in their rigs. I'm not putting one medium against another, but the idea of an old fashioned Disney musical in CG is still fresh. Meanwhile I think audiences have gotten a bit bored of the hand drawn fairy tale, not the medium in general, just that type of movie. We need another Lilo and stitch, or even treasure planet. I realize that movie was a failure money wise, but I think this is in line with what audiences want now. It needs to be an idea that happens to be hand drawn, not something that relies on it as a Disney staple.

No, not yet. Blue Sky Disney said it's Chris Buck and he could be, if the previous CG film he was working on fell through and then got on board to helm the CG-fied Snow Queen.

Don't even joke about that I never really understood the fuss over the title change of Tangled but I might take issue if they used a title like "Snowed In" for Snow Queen.

I think Disney needs a strong villain character and the snow queen is exactly that!
I pray this doesn't change ... i'm waiting 'till after wreck-it ralph and then we will know more about the next two projects to come!

Look,the Snow Queen is not going to have that problem with the title.The Snow Queen is a totally different story to tackle.The original story of Rapunzel had pre-marital pregnancy and painful blindness.I believe
Glenn Keane like having the idea of having er....uhm..a youthful..sexual approach to a fairytale.(not saying that Glen is weird).I think he wanted the movie to have a The Little Mermaid sense to it.But ofcourse he couldn't finish it, and the project was handed to Bryon and Howard. They lightened the movie up a bit,and it was ready to go.Then TPATF "bombed".The company panicked and decided a name changed from Rapunzel to Tangled.

The Snow Queen is different.Gerda and Kay had an innocent relationship.The only thing "controversial" is the religious themes and of course Satan as the villain.That means that the focus is going to be on Gerda's quest to find Kay to lighten up the story.They can actually keep the religious themes if they keep the focus on Gerda's quest.

How completely biased. Just because Tangled was gorgeous and in CG shouldn't guarantee the same will be said for Snow Queen. And I'm well aware that it's not coming out for another few years, but until it does come out, we'll never know!

And by the way, I loved Tangled and all, but come frickin' on, Disney! Stop screwing yourself and your animators over!!!

If traditional animation was raking in the cash, they'd keep going at it. I bet no one higher-up at Disney wants to kill off hand drawn, why would they? It made Disney what it is today. But if CG is what is making them money: selling theater tickets, selling DVD/Blu-ray/Digital download, selling merchandise and soundtracks - they are going to stick with CG and not traditional.

And yes, that means laying off traditional animators who cannot or will not switch to CG. Is it "screwing over" - nope, it's business. In business there is no screwing over, there's only the pursuit of money and that which stands in the way of money and must be eliminated.

Because of Tangled. And since Tangled is CG, and gorgeous, that is what Snow Queen should be done in.

Because there haven't been any gorgeous 2D films.

And it's not so much what it "should" be done in, but what it "will" be done in. But I guess this'll be like with Rapunzel, and everyone'll pretend this movie didn't begin as 2D and that the change to 3D was an organic decision. Like Neal said, it's a business decision and whether or not it would be best in 2D or CG has nothing to do with it.
