The Little Mermaid in Concert

Post by Sotiris »

Ariel will make her Hollywood Bowl debut June 4 when Sara Bareilles and Rebel Wilson headline a cast performing the songs from Disney’s The Little Mermaid as the film plays backed by a 71-piece live orchestra. Bareilles will play Ariel, the titular mermaid, while Wilson has signed on as Ursula, the sea witch. The cast also includes John Stamos as Chef Louis, Tituss Burgess as Sebastian and Darren Criss as Prince Eric.

The idea for the Hollywood Bowl recreation came about as The Little Mermaid’s co-composer, eight-time Oscar winner Alan Menken, and his representative, Kraft-Engel Management co-owner Richard Kraft, were discussing possible touring plans. “Richard said, ‘how would you feel about a live performance of The Little Mermaid with the film, orchestra and guest performers?’ I said, ‘you’ve got to be kidding. That would be unreal!,’” recalls Menken. Menken, who co-wrote the music for the 1989 film with his late partner Howard Ashman, says this will mark the first time his score has been performed in its entirety by a live orchestra since he recorded it at Todd-AO Recording Stage more than 25 years ago. “That was my very first full score for a film,” he tells Billboard. “I was nervous and I learned an immense amount both in the writing and in the recording of the score.”

Among Menken’s beloved songs from the movie are “Under the Sea,” “Kiss The Girl,” “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Part of Your World,” which Bareilles recently went into an impromptu performance of on March 30 to entertain the audience when part of the set quit working in her new Broadway play Waitress. “I’ve been pretending I was Ariel in swimming pools since I was a little girl, and now I get to pretend on a bigger stage. This is just fantastic,” said Bareilles in a statement. Wilson labels herself a Menken “fan-girl,” in a statement, adding Ursula is “just such a delicious role that I’ve always wanted to play.”

The Hollywood Bowl performance will also include additional songs Menken co-wrote for the Broadway version of The Little Mermaid, including his favorite, “Her Voice,” sung by Prince Eric. “I’m so excited about that,” he says. “Seeing the material from the movie wedded to the Broadway show will be incredible.” Michael Kosarin, who has worked with Menken since 1994, will lead the orchestra and a 12-person choir.

Menken, 66, says there has been talk about touring The Little Mermaid film backed by live orchestras in front of audiences, but there are “no concrete plans yet,” he says. “For a lot of us, it’s wait and see how the Hollywood Bowl goes.” For the composer, the ongoing love for The Little Mermaid and the vaunted position it holds in the pantheon of great Disney animated films is a continuing thrill for him. “I still feel like the off-off-Broadway struggling composer who first wrote Little Shop of Horrors, but one day you wake up and you’ve turned into something bigger,” he says. “It is a bit of an out of body experience when you know that people have grown up investing so much in something you wrote.”

Menken will open the Hollywood Bowl show with a medley of his best-known songs from Beauty And The Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, Newsies, Enchanted, and Tangled. “Then I’m going to sit back and enjoy the show like everyone else,” he says.

Tickets go on sale April 9 at 10 a.m Pacific Time via ticketmaster.com.

I love Sara Bareilles! Darren Criss is okay, too, but way younger than her. Too bad they brought back Lewis for Triton. :/ Of course I won't be able to see this, but might watch anything put on YouTube.

I like Bareilles, and Criss is fine. Titus is hilarious, so I'm fine with him being Sebastian again. Rebel Wilson is an odd choice to me, though I guess she might be better than Sherie Rene Scott, a casting choice that still seems completely out of place.

Probably won't see it either but it sounds like an amazing experience. I love Tituss Burgess and Darren Criss so glad to see them as Sebastian and Eric. Wasn't expecting Rebel Wilson but I think she could really blow it out of the water with Ursula. And John Stamos is always a nice addition to anything.

This is fantastic news! What a concept as well. I would certainly attend if they tour it. It would be nice to see them put together an album or songbook for this as well. Menken's music in all its glory, performed by a live orchestra (and not in some cheesy medley sort of way either!)

You know, I had a stray thought, and now I'm wondering if this might be Disney's way to test out certain possible actors they might be considering for a live-action remake of TLM?

I think the reason I thought about it was because I was wondering who they could possibly get to play Ursula even if they made a live-action remake outside of someone like Bette Midler. Maybe they're testing out Rebel Wilson to see if audiences like her in the role (and maybe Darren Criss, too; I can't imagine they'd cast Bareilles for a film though)? Wilson would seem like an odd choice--but then the idea of Emma Stone playing Cruella de Vil is pretty odd to me.

Fingers crossed! A live-action Mermaid musical needs to happen before this fairy tale remake trend wears off.

Wow that's kind of messed up! People, including myself, bought tickets for the first two, then they throw out the big guns for another show? I mean I don't care either way because I'm only going for the experience, but that's not right.

Now THAT will be an epic show !!! Goodness me, I would give anything to go and see it !!!! What a brilliant way to honour the film, and Jodi herself. And her 30 year career with Disney ! It thrills my heart that she has remained Ariel for so long.

What an honour for everyone able to go and see it. Hoping for copious amounts of YouTube videos so I can try and capture a bit of the magic.

This new article has some interesting new insights as to the upcoming Concert to Film performance!

http://www.hitfix.com/news/little-merma ... isney-fans
The most difficult musical number to figure out how to make work in this set-up has been “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” Kraft said. Throughout the show, the concert’s cast will sing their musical parts, but at spoken parts, the dialogue recorded for the film will play. But in Ursula’s saucy villain song, there is some dialogue as the song stops and starts. At this point, ahead of next week’s rehearsals, Kraft expects Ursula’s spoken parts of “Poor Unfortunate Souls” will be a mix of Pat Carroll’s recorded dialogue and Wilson live. The Aussie actress will sing the song in a different key than Carroll did since Carroll’s voice is so low.

“It’s just technically a very difficult piece to pull off,” Kraft noted.

But, he added, Wilson, “of everybody is the most on top of it, working with her vocal coach. Rebel is the most organized and professional person I’ve ever worked with.”

Just after pulling off the feat of “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” though, conductor Michael Kosarin and his musicians will get a break — the intermission break will be right after Ariel gets her legs and breaks through the surface of the sparkling water in that gorgeous silhouetted shot.

“It was the perfect spot,” Kraft said. “It’s so dramatic.”

After the audience is back in their seats, before the film starts up again, they’ll get another musical treat: an 8-minute violin concerto based on the themes of Little Mermaid, commissioned just for this event.

So exciting! I was hoping Beyond My Wildest Dreams would be in the show, but it's all good. Still very excited! The fact that there will even be an intermission is so cool!

I really liked the execution of Poor Unfortunate Souls. Rebel was great and I loved the part Ariel sang.

Jodi Benson also sang Part of your World after the show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nh1ZXVtNhYQ

It's amazing she still has that vocal quality all those years later! She gave me chills. It was amazing.

It's interesting that Brave was brought to that consideration. My initial thoughts was that it was somewhat dismissed, due to it being a Pixar production which never was considered apart of Pixar's golden era. And therefore the same could've been said about Merida. Perhaps if Brave happened to be a full-house Disney production, it could've been labeled for it's strengths (though I wonder if it's reception would've been different).

Though at least Brave ended up with a Princess who wasn't interested in romance at all, the trite and derivative storyline hampered Brave's overall purpose as a whole. It's a pity that Merida's purpose was to rebel against her arranged marriage and that it was the story. Despite that the resolution was something of a innovation, it's a pity the rest of the storyline wasn't.

I don't mind Disney's current mentality of heroines completely dismissing their yearning for a man. But the problem with films like Brave and Frozen is their execution. Though Brave was aimed to be a traditional fairy tale and we could assume that the marriage premise was a part from the get-go, I've stated my remarks about it.
In Frozen there were hardly even room for romance, when the broken sisterly bond and Elsa's problems were enough of a plot for an entire movie. The romance felt shoehorned in and would've been a better fit in a premise where it was actually room for it. Heck, in fact it's no wonder that Elsa was depicted without an love interest, due to her inner struggle being her arc! The romance in Frozen should've been a subplot, not as prominent as it ended up to be.

I remember Colin Davidson from dvdmg.com labeling Ariel as something one of a kind, despite starting the streak of strong, independent Disney females, that she still never belonged with her followers (despite not stating a main reason for being so). Despite my previous rants and criticisms, it is certainly true that Ariel's initial goal isn't about finding a man of her dreams, despite Eric belonging to the world that she yearns for. Her goal is to be a part of that world and later on he becomes the catalyst for her.
But it's true that despite the ongoing rants about Ariel desires, is that she was praised for her proactive nature and starting the streak of independent females. So Ariel is worthy of the praise. It's funny and contradicting that even Belle, which gained more praise for her strenght and independence, still at the end wanted a man, despite that it was vaguely and subtly cited in the movie.

However, now that we're getting an exception in Moana, it's still contradicting and remarkable that no matter how independent a Disney Princess is, they still mostly end up with the thing that they've criticized for; a love interest. The criticism is understandable, but also annoying after a while. Cause no matter what they've still criticized for it. Of course it's a impossible task to depict a character who's absolutely flawless and appealable to everyone. But due to the ongoing rants, perhaps Disney definitively should've done it :D :P Pardon my sarcastic remark, but I couldn't resist.
