Re: Wish
Very generic trailer and I don't like the animation
The voice cast is fine, 3 hispanic actors and 1 who is at least mediterranean (ramy) so not bad
I hope the movie is good but the full trailer didn't did the work to make it look cinem worthy, looks very streaming (not a bad streaming movie but clearly not worth the ticket, and I say this as someone who has been hoping the movie since last September)

Re: Wish
I was also underwhelmed by the new trailer. I don't know how to put this exactly, but Wish kinda feels like a zombie Disney movie. There are a lot of elements in it that on paper make for great Disney movies, but for some reason they aren't coming together quite right. It just feels sort of hollow and soulless.
Re: Wish
New info about the songs:
The Hollywood Reporter says Disney has yet to decide which song or songs to submit for the Oscars. They must choose before November 1, which is the submission deadline. Jennifer Lee and Peter Del Vecho talk about it in the article:
This other article also offers a description of each song and confirms Asha works as a tour guide: https://mamasgeeky.com/2023/09/wish-foo ... ction.html
Source: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movie ... 235597678/Disney recently previewed extended Wish footage to the press, showing off the movieโs watercolor-like CG animation, catchy original songs, and more of the story. During that presentation, the studio introduced four songs: โWelcome to Rosasโ (the movieโs opening number, which introduces the fairytale Kingdom of Rosas, inspired by the look of classic Disney movies as well as towns along the Iberian Peninsula), โThis Wishโ (the filmโs โI wantโ song, performed by DeBose as Asha makes her wish), โIโm a Starโ (an ensemble performance featuring a cast of animated singing animals) and โThis is the Thanks I Getโ (performed by Pine, as the King expresses his motives).
Lee tells THR that three more songs and a reprise have not yet been unwrapped, including a DeBose and Pine duet, as well as an end credits song performed by Michaels. Of the duet, she says Asha and Magnifico โare aligned in their understanding of the power of what these wishes are emotionallyโhow precious they are as a part of someoneโs heartโand to get to have a duet where the villain and the protagonist are aligned, even for a moment, was a thrill career-wise.โ
The Hollywood Reporter says Disney has yet to decide which song or songs to submit for the Oscars. They must choose before November 1, which is the submission deadline. Jennifer Lee and Peter Del Vecho talk about it in the article:
โI think itโs going to be hard,โ Disney Animationโs chief creative officer Jennifer Leeโa Wish writer and exec producerโtells The Hollywood Reporter. โWe havenโt had that conversation yet with our studio music team. โฆ Because we come out late, we have to make choices soon, but at the same time, we are going to start getting the soundtrack out a little sooner so people can start hearing the music. That might tell us a bit more.โ
In recent years, Disney has implemented a strategy of only putting forth one song from its animated musicals for consideration. Will it enter multiple songs this year? โIt is under discussion. The hard part is you donโt want to split the vote, so you generally want to pick the song that you think will best resonate with the audience,โ Wish producer Peter Del Vecho tells THR. โThere were so many standout songs in this movie, selecting which one we are going to put forward is going to be a challenge.โ
This other article also offers a description of each song and confirms Asha works as a tour guide: https://mamasgeeky.com/2023/09/wish-foo ... ction.html

Re: Wish
So now we have a confirmed seven songs (including a reprise), one of which is the King Magnifico villain song, "This is the Thanks I Get". I have read in one of the articles somewhere that describes this song as "both fun and menacing", it sounds like this will be the "Poor Unfortunate Souls", "Gaston" type of song other than the "Be Prepared", "Hellfire" type.
It's kind of funny to read comments elsewhere that describes the new trailer as "un-exciting", "disappointing", "generic" and other such words. When one has to remember that Tangled and Frozen had FAR WORSE first trailers than this. I'm glad we got out of the era when Disney trailers felt like they were ripping off Dreamworks.

Re: Wish
Didnt they try that already with Moana and Raya?
I also like the poster and the cast seems nice. Definitely Gonna watch it on the big screen (because theres nothing else later this year that seems interesting enough to see) But the Trailer was meh. What makes the movie seem weak to me is that there is no real emotional Personal attachment to it unlike other timeless movies (Frozen with being afraid of what others think of you, Aladdin with playing a role to feel worthy, and Tiana with feeling like youre so close to your dreams and feeling helpless to reach them etc.) ALL things people can relate to and DRIVE people to root for them and seeing yourself in them, but this?....nope. Just because Asha is a Person with moral doesnt automatically make her likable or relatable, and if "trying to make the wishes for others true" is the message of the story...Musical Master wrote: โWed Sep 27, 2023 10:39 am The animation in the newest trailer does seem to be a bit more defined/finished in comparison to the teaser back in April. It's all going to look beautiful on the big screen and King Magnifico is looking like a promising villain. The poster is really nice and quite simple in comparison to the other posters of previous WDAS films.
Not to mention that the cast we got is very solid.
Normally I would also be harsh on such a movie but I need to remind myself that Wish is only "100 year Disney Animation Magic" ,the movie. Its just a celebration movie of all past Disney movies (even the newer ones) mixed into one movie: The princess, the songs, the villain &maybe Twist villainSotiris wrote: โWed Sep 27, 2023 4:28 pm I was also underwhelmed by the new trailer. Its as if Disney asked AI to create a movie based on every Disney property and it came up with this
thats why I also think it couldnt function as its own independent franchise with sequels and stuff because its depending too much on the legacy. It was only Made for the 100 year celebration i guess. Take all the Disney legacy elements away and the movie is empty.
Thats why I also dont Take this movie seriously or as "THE NEXT BIG THING" like frozen was or Tangled. Just a 2 hours Disney commercial. The movie dosnt bring something new to the table unlike the others. That sounds maybe a bit mean but atleast I confessed how I feel about it and Im still clearly gonna see it on the big screen and hope for the best

Wish Filmmakers Considered Going Full 2D for Disney's 100th Anniversary - Here's Why They Didn't
https://www.ign.com/articles/wish-filmm ... they-didnt
https://www.ign.com/articles/wish-filmm ... they-didnt
โWe did talk about it in the beginning, in multiple directions,โ Jennifer Lee said. โIt was interesting, because when we first started thinking about it, we were just deciding. It wasn't like: we can or can't. It was just deciding, is that what we want to do?โ
After the Wish teaser trailer dropped, animation aficionados were surprised to see the computer animation look painterly, which is more in line with the watercolor style of Disneyโs 1959 adaptation of Sleeping Beauty.
Lee said that specific aesthetic came out of discussions with Wish producers Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes Lancaster Jones, and co-directors Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn about their collective goal in making Wish a film where there was no break from the artistsโ vision to the screen.
โWhat happens in hand-drawn is that you have the incredible hand of the artist, but also limitations in what you could do on screen,โ Lee explained. โWhat happened in CG is you'd have incredible, boundless opportunities, visually, that elevated it โ even to the point for some โ into realism, which is not what we wanted to do. The more important thing to us was to have a way to find technology that can do everything. Connect to the true vision of the artist, but bring in technology that could finally take away limitations.โ
Lee admitted that even after they committed to using computer animation to make Wish, they did consider using traditional animation to bring the character Star to life. Ultimately, she said 2D had too many limitations in terms of camera movements and characterization.
However, Lee said their upcoming short, Once Upon a Studio, ended up becoming the project that celebrates Disneyโs 2D and 3D traditions. โWe didn't know if it would work, and it did,โ she shared.
โWe don't, in any way, want to shy away, or turn our back on hand-drawn,โ Lee emphasized. โWe love it. It's a part of our DNAโฆKeeping that legacy alive is absolutely critical. But with every film or series or short, we're going to do the technology that we think is absolutely right for what we're trying to achieve.โ
Re: Wish
I guess this is the new version of "it's the story that matters, not the medium" corporate BS speak. To hear Lee, a creative, say hand-drawn animation is limiting in terms of characterization, is beyond defeating. If anything, hand-drawn animation is superior when it comes to characters emoting and characters acting, those very things that give characters their personality.
Unless you're making an effects heavy/action movie, camera movements should be on the very bottom of the list of reasons why you opt for one medium over another. Gorgeous, breath-taking, sweeping shots have successfully been produced in hand-drawn films before.
This is super disappointing.
Long story short, don't expect any real return of hand-drawn animation.
EDIT: I've browsed several comment sections under the trailer, both on YT and Instagram, and a lot of people who don't appear to be animation aficionados are asking why the animation looks "unfinished". That speaks volumes about this "technology that could finally take away limitations."

It works in theory. In practice, characters look subpar and you relegated it to Disney+. And apparently you don't mind mining 2D animation when people need to be reminded of Disney's legacy and when you need to sell a product, but heaven forbid you actually do something new and concrete with it.However, Lee said their upcoming short, Once Upon a Studio, ended up becoming the project that celebrates Disneyโs 2D and 3D traditions. โWe didn't know if it would work, and it did,โ she shared.

Re: Wish
I also had issues with the trailer but I didn't want to say anything because I feel that I might have been too negative about the film that it was too dispiriting to people, but then others went on to say exactly what I felt, especially The Disneynerd.
I will only add that the trailer felt like something Disney Toons would make, like those Tinker Bell movies.
Just like it happened with Encanto, my anticipation for this film decreases with each new information about it.
Unfortunately:
I might get it after I watch the movie and if I like it.

Re: Wish
The animation does look unfinished, but when they show part of the movie in the night time, the animation looked really good! I'm assuming that this movie takes place mostly at night (it would be really cool if they did). Though that's not an excuse for unfinished look in the day time setting. Though I'm sure it would look better in theater.
Re: Wish
I've now watched the dubbed trailer for Spain and, interestingly, Asha's name is pronounced differently there. They pronounce it like it didn't have an "h". In the Latin American version, though, it's pronounced like in the US. I wonder why that is.
Another thing that made me think of a past Disney film is Asha being a fugitive. At first, I thought it was something interesting and new for a Disney protagonist, but then the cloak she wears reminded me of Esmeralda and how that also happened to her in The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
It's interesting, though, that Magnifico seems to try to turn Asha's friends against her. At least, the Sleepy-inspired character whose wish of becoming a knight or something like that he grants. He's later shown next to the king when he announces Asha is a traitor, and is not part of the group that breaks into Magnifico's tower. Dahlia is not there either, but I guess that's because due to her disability, she can't help in that way. I guess he'll change and join the group again eventually, though. Since he's voiced by Evan Peters, which is a better-known actor than the ones voicing the other Teens, he'll probably have a bigger role than most of the rest.
I also wanted to ask you, Prince Kido, if the painting or tapestry behind Magnifico in the shot below is the one you mentioned in your footage description and if the brief snippet of the song we hear at the end of the trailer is "I'm a Star."

That's possible. I think that song and "I'm a Star" are the two I'm more curious to hear.Musical Master wrote: โWed Sep 27, 2023 5:36 pm So now we have a confirmed seven songs (including a reprise), one of which is the King Magnifico villain song, "This is the Thanks I Get". I think the camera swirling around Asha in that shot is indeed a nod to Pocahontas. And I believe there are at least two other references to the film in the trailer. The big and seemingly old tree where Asha is when she makes her wish reminds me a lot of Grandmother Willow, and the ends of the green magic effects coming from Magnifico's hands look similar to the wolfs made of smoke Kekata creates with his magic in the scene where he warns the tribe about the "pale visitors."DisneyFan09 wrote: โWed Sep 27, 2023 2:52 pm The part with Asha and Dahlia is appealing, as are the moments with the chubby Kristoff-like guy, the part where Asha runs up the branches of the tree and having the camera swirling around her (which reminded me of Pocahontas), and with King Magnifico and Queen Amaya (despite how there`s little that suggest that Magnifico will be a great villain).

It probably feels that way because Asha doesn't have a dream of her own. All she wants is to help her family/community. We know, but it's still insulting to claim the reason for that is the superior camera movements and characterization of CG. During the Lasseter era the excuse was that the medium was chosen by the director which was obviously untrue, but at least it didn't put down 2D.

Didn't Jennifer Lee say Asha was an activist? Or am I confusing her with Snow White? Re: Wish
Disney doesn't really know how to make good trailer. I know they are trying to appeal to the kids, but whenever I would rewatch the trailer, I would skip certain part of it because I would find it cringe worthy. I honestly like the teaser more because it shows more of the epic, mysterious side of the story while the trailer just make me scare that it would be like Elemental. If you watch the Elemental teaser and trailer, they both have quite a different vibe.

My take.... I was not impressed by the animation, and the story and characters (especially the โTeensโ which seem to exist just to check boxes) donโt really appeal to me. Iโll catch this one on DVD.
Iโd still love to see a fairy tale tale or story set in authentic Spain.
