Re: Aladdin Retrospective
"Ugly" might be a harsh description of Jungle Book, but in comparison to most Walt-era classics, its backgrounds fail to shine. Still, the opening credits scene is very good - but the effective atmosphere is rooted more in the sound effects and music than the animation. Thank you Jules. :)...

Re: Package films on Blu-Ray
I'm pretty certain they'll be released on Blu-Ray; what I'm more hopeful for is the incredibly improbable rerelease of the Walt Disney Treasures boxset for BR.

Re: Anyone who actually likes the Disney sequels?
You didn't like Rescuers Down Under? You mean the pointless sequel that embarked upon an inferior retread of the original's story, albeit ruining Bernard and Biana's romance, replacing the genuinely likeable Penny with the bland Cody and substituting substance for style? No, I didn't like it. In fa...

Re: Pocahontas vs Mulan
Mulan, without question. Her inability to fit in with society's notions about at women should be like, her isolation amongst men as well, her well-portrayed selfless sacrifice, and of course the transgender subtext make her a far stronger character. Pocahontas is not as dull as many label her as, bu...

Re: Anyone who actually likes the Disney sequels?
Spoiling the memory of a classic film by needlessly continuing the story with subpar animation and substitute voice actors? No thank you. All the Disney sequels - even those in the DACs - are horrible.

Re: Aladdin Retrospective
Unless it ever goes on tour in the UK in the future, I regrettably won't be able to see it. It's a shame; I'd love to see Jonathan Freeman playing Jafar in "live-action" as well as voicing him.

Re: Your favorite "Frozen" song
Easily "Let It Go" - it convinced me to see the film and that it wasn't just a weaker Tangled. It's not especially Disneyesque, yet it perfectly makes us empathise with Elsa's character and even feel a bit of the same triumph. As mentioned by previous posters, the animation is also very go...

Re: Greatest Books You've Ever Read
My original list requires some amending, now that I've recently enjoyed: Stoner , by John Williams; in essence, it's the anti-Gatsby, and moves from the titular hero William Stoner's life from youth in 1901 to his death in 1956. It's a remarkably tender book published in the 1960s that suddenly beca...

Re: Disney's progression of gender roles
I think it's grossly unfair to tar all feminists with the same brush, simply because they're criticising films you like. It's unquestionably wrong to simply want action heroine after action heroine, in the vein of Lara Croft or Black Widow, but most don't want that. Most simply want good characteris...

Re: Disney characters you're meh about
Dopey has never amused me as much as Grumpy or Doc did. Jiminy Cricket is an ostentatious, priggish procrastinator, yet I still retain some nebulous nostalgic affection for him. The casts of Aristocats, Robin Hood, Black Cauldron and Oliver & Company. Pocahontas and Mulan are rather dull in my e...

Aladdin Retrospective
(After viewing Aladdin earlier, I had a few thoughts I wanted to put down). Out of all the Disney Animated Classics, Aladdin is surely the gayest (in all senses), most objectively superlative (well, Pinocchio's animation might be greater, but in regards to all criteria, Aladdin is the finest) and al...

Re: Doctor Who Discussion
It was good. Enjoyable, funny dialogue, clever time-wimey loops and so forth...and obviously the Tom Baker and Peter Capaldi cameos were great. Nevertheless, the Doctor's new quest - finding Gallifrey - is a bit nonsensical. The Doctor never liked Gallifrey, or the Time Lords. He ran away to see the...

I'm incessantly exploding with happiness and nervousness. To honour 798 episodes of the Doctor's ongoing adventure through space and time... Doctor Who 50 Greatest Moments: 1. 1. Beauty and the Beast 2. When You Wish Upon A Star 3. Under the Sea 4. A Whole New World 5. You'll Be In My Heart 6. Colours of the Wind 7. Can You Feel the Love Tonight I love the first five, but find the other two mediocre fare. Under the Sea is a delightful melody, although I think Part of that...

Re: Episode 4: A New Hope for Gay UD Threads?
I wouldn't describe myself as "labelling" gays based on stereotypes; I am virtually on the lookout for other gay people, and recognise the possibility of some masculine boys being gay, regardless of having thus far failed to meet one. Upon reflection, I'm sure the effeminate gays are behav...

Thank you Duster (and I do like you as well as others). However, I don't want to give the impression that I am constantly seething with hatred and frustration; I assure you, I can be content, and not everyone in the "real world", so to speak, is an empty idiot to me. But I'm not going to m...

Re: Doctor Who Discussion
Hmm. I rather like the change of style that comes with Dalek, because it signifies the darkness and brutality of the Daleks. The only episodes in S1 that are as dark are Father's Day and The Parting of the Ways (the Moffat scripts are the creepiest, yes, but full of wit and cheery charm too). It's b...

Re: Has Pixar Lost Their Way ?
In answer to the thread title's question: YES. I disagree with the article's suggestion that WALL-E was Pixar's peak; I consider Up to be their finest hour. Whenever I hear from the vocal minority of critics, I am baffled by their issues with it - since when do humour and emotion not go well togethe...

Re: Top 3 Animated Classics
As I'm sure it is with many people, my favourites generally remain the same, but their positions in a list denoting quality change a lot, especially following re-watches. And so, my current top three: 1. Dumbo (1941) 2. Sleeping Beauty (1959) 3. Fantasia (1940) As for the rest of my top ten at prese...
