Wasn't Tim Burton seriously considering developing a "Wicked" like property based on Maleficent?
That way Disney gets all the goodies from a villain-based story.
And if that does well, why not "Hooked on Evil", or "The Terror of Tremaine", etc?

It's a marketable product, folks
For Disney, Cinderella is a highly marketable commodity and it makes sense for them to take advantage of Cindy's earning power whenever they can. The copyrights on this character design aren't going to last forever (unless Disney manages to change copyrights to be perpetual - they may ! :o ). And we...

John K's opinion
John Kricfalusi, key talent behind MIGHTY MOUSE THE NEW ADVENTURES, and creator of REN & STIMPY, had a post about TANGLED on his web site, which ended up with more responses than anything else he's had there for a long time. Essentially, John demonstrated how TANGLED could be made entirely out o...

tim burton said "no flick" for now
...or at least that's what the interview referred to earlier in this thread had posted. Then again, Hollywierd is known for zigs and zags, so perhaps Maleficent's flick will happen in the future. Marc Davis was Maleficent's chief designer and directing animator. He felt she was more of a stately spe...

3D fully feasable
The computer software used by nearly all major animation companies today (including Disney) has 3D camera capabilities built into the package. So should a producer wish to make one of their new "cel style" productions in 3D, they can do so relatively easily, though (so far) the output will...

2d to 3d is not trivial
Converting flat 2D to 3D is a very tricky process. It involves a fair bit of roto work to generate new plates that then can be placed in varying positions within a 3D camera's world. CLASH OF THE TITANS 3D is such a process, which frankly did not work very well on it (levels were poorly defined, lot...

lots of references for Pooh
Any new Disney Pooh movie has the advantage of plenty of archival material for the animators to refer to. If JL and the production managers give the animators a decent amount of time to work on it, the new Pooh flick could be the full return of 2D to Disney USA. Perhaps Disney corporate will get so ...

Note on Laserdiscs
BTW, one reason Disney may have been so enthusiastic about Laser Discs was it had a top notch boutique authoring house making the menus and other special features for their laser discs - Gork Enterprises, located in San Fernando, CA. Gork's now an award winning provider of DVD and BluRay menus, spec...

3D may make a difference
With 3D in homes becoming a reality (plasma sets from Panasonic working the best so far), BluRay may hang on longer than expected simply because the digital bandwidth to do 3D over internet will be substantially higher than 2D BluRay quality. So for those wanting best picture quality, a top notch Bl...

Audience makeup for PATF?
Have there been any postings or articles that attempt to figure out who actually saw PATF? Families? Gen X'ers? etc.? At this point PATF's made around $100 mil domestic gross. Production cost's been estimated at $105 mil so once PATF gets rolling overseas and on BluRay/etc. it should prove a modest ...

good start
Looks like PATF, which goes into wide release Dec 11 (my bad earlier - thought release date was just before Thanksgiving) , did very well at the two theaters screening it; Well over $1 million total for the Thanksgiving Holiday.

PATF tearing up the critic charts
At last look Rotten Tomatoes pegged PATF at 83% approval. This was before the slew of additional good reviews released today.
Only major "bad" review was from Variety.
Any bets Froggie plucks the Box Office's magic twanger hard enough to set a new 2D animation BO record?

quick note
Both my classic Disney friends and myself found the Fab 4 Disneys, including BATB and ALADDIN, were some of the best examples of "Broadway Play Animation" I've seen to date. Their inspirations felt original - I didn't sense having "seen this before" in any of those shows. Not tru...

who used toon boom first?
Actually, Disney Australia was the first Disney division to use TOON BOOM for all their productions. In the mid 90's, they was farming out ALADDIN TV episodes to a number of shops. UNLIMITED ENERGEE in Sydney Australia (one of two Australian studios with a digital production pipeline ending with one...

Mike Barrier's article was very interesting, one aspect of it restating in a different form the comment one Animator who worked with Disney himself (yes, they are still out there) said about PATF: that there was no "magic" and in a sense he had seen what was in PTAF before. My earlier comm...

We now have PATF merchandise in Target, Fred Meyer, Costco and other local stores. It seems well made and appropriate for supporting merchandise. Meanwhile, watching some more PATF clips floating around, technically, PATF is very polished and pushes the boundary for Digitally produced traditional fi...

Memory says Bedknobs and Broomsticks was a modest success, not a runaway hit. As for TPATF, my 2-cents is it must resonate with the younger, hipper audiences if Disney is to truly launch a "new age" alongside their successful Pixar franchise. trying to update the older Disney classics via ...

Cindy is of the oldest stories around
Versions of the Cinderella story existed in BC Egypt (she was called Rhodopis, her savor the God Horus, and a slipper was involved.); you can find it on the web by Google searching for Egyptian cinderella. Same is true for BC China. For whatever reason, this story, evolving as years pass, has stood ...

big improvement for sure
also note the HD version is relatively free of the MPEG2 artifacts found on the DVD version. That's because most HD Blu-Ray encoding is H264, which can provide much better encoding quality. WRT what Disney is "obligated" to do (IMHO - your mileage may vary :D :) Disney is a publicly traded...
