I don't know if you own Alice in Wonderland on digital but if you do then that version was updated to the new restoration even in 1080p. I also think Disney will update the film on Disney+ eventually.

As far as I know the gender change was made recently so they might as well have taken an existing character and made a few changes instead of creating a completely new model due to lack of time.
