Here's a review from a - lets say - obsessive Picture Quality nut. But it has some interesting screenshots. It compares the US Hunchback of Notre Dame with the German Release.

As you can see, the R2 does look better.

All this time, I've been thinking it's the higher PAL resolution making the PAL disc look better. Perhaps European discs just get better transfers and encoding? (That's certainly true for Pocahontas).

Not really, Hunchback is just an example. Besides, the PAL speedup is a major artifact by itself.

well, I´ve seen caps from the european transfer and, though it has better image quality but it has several dust and even I saw some "ants"

Well, I won't deny the 4% speed-up exists, but I've never noticed it. Most PAL users can't (but I suspect this is because they've grown-up with the speed-up and treat is as normal - even if a NTSC version of the film is played immediately before, they just don't notice it).

As for PAL always being better - in theory it should be. But in practice it's not (lots of reasons from not spending for new transfers to poor encoding).

Disney Animated DVDs do seem to be much better in PAL though. The Beauty and the Beast suffers from the same artifacts as the R1 Hunchback, but the PAL version is much better. Even on discs like The Lion King which are near flawless on R1, the PAL looks better. Generally on my (laughingly called) home theatre system, there is no substantial difference on PAL and NTSC live action movies.

Odd, because in theory the extra resolution means that approximately 20% more disc space will be needed to store the video.

I think it is because people who grew up on PAL are just naturally faster.
They have to play the things at a 4% speed-up to catch up with our natural speed.

It works in theory anyways...
