Well...I'm going to try and revive this thread idea after seeing how much fun it was whilst playing in the recently bumped Sleeping Beauty discussion. We basically stopped doing this at around Pocahontas and a similar thread to do with Hunchback appeared, so that would make Hercules the film to target...but I realised that we didn't do a thread about The Great Mouse Detective, so here we go.

I remember seeing this film as a kid and was a bit spooked by it. Despite being a film about talking mice in cute costumes, it does seem a bit maracabre in places (especially the opening scene and those with the cat Felicia). I had kind of avoided it for this reason. That was until around last April when a certain member appeared and made claims of a sequel appearing. For some reason, that thread made me interested in seeing the film again, so I went and bought the DVD.

After watching it, I was pretty impressed and appreciated the film more, mostly to do with Ratigan (surprisingly), who is one of the better villains of Disney. His intentions help to lead to a pretty cool finale (one of the best in Disney history). I'll admit that the film can drag a little bit at times but apart from that, this movie is nice. Overall, it seems like a "step in the right direction" film, as it seems like Disney were on the right path to creating hits like The Little Mermaid with this.

The DVD is a mixed bag (or rather box :P). On the one hand, I was impressed with the image quality (it was supposedly digitally remastered, so did Lowry do this?), but the extras seemed a bit lame in some respects, although better than the majority of Gold Collection discs like Ichabod and Mr Toad, Robin Hood etc and other catalogue single disc titles of animated films like The Rescuers.

And another question; why is the film called Basil the Great Mouse Detective in England? What's with the enforced name? :?

I remember for a month when I was little I wanted to watch nothing but, "The Great Mouse Detective" for a month! I mean I loved it for a while. Then I got tired of it and decided to watch Toy Story for the 300th time!

So I always liked this movie. Now that I see it, I think this is one of the most funnest "animated classics" Disney has released, and is the 2nd most underrated Disney movie IMO(nothing beats Treasure Planet for underratedness! :D)

So anyway there are so many things to like about this movie: a terrific villian, likeable heros, amazing animation, another memorable soundtrack from Henry Mancini, awesome voice actors, and a fun storyline that's always fun to watch.

I also found it interesting that Vincent Price, an actor in alot of critically acclamed movies, said that his most favorite role was being the voice of Ratigan in "The Great Mouse Detective". He said the reason was mainly because he got to sing 2 out of the 3 songs from that movie. And I personally can't blame him, he sings both of those songs perfectly not to mention brings Ratigan to life.

Also this is one of the first animated movies to ever have CGI in it. I personally think it's tied with The Lion King and Tarzan with having the best use of CGI in a hand-drawn animated movie. I mean it's so hard to tell what's computor animation and what's hand-drawn.

Overall GMD probably didn't change the ways of animation too much, nor is it one of Disney's most remembered movie, however I think it's a fun movie that is definatly worth watching.

I just hope the sequel that comes out in a month doesn't ruin the original!

I own the DVD. I liked the movie. It had it's own charm to it. I'm still amazed at how "classic" the animation was, it seemed more like a Disney Afternoon type of animation (the early DA).

What I loved about the movie was the fact Vincent Price did a voiceover for it. I never would've imagined his type do get involved with Disney but he did, and it was one of his better roles.

why not a theatrically released sequel to this instead of The Jungle Book 2.
Don 't get me wrong Jungle Book is actually a better movie than GMD, but GMD is much better for sequels.

I never saw this movie ever before. I'm tempted to see it though. In one of the many Disney stores in San Fransisco, there's a TV that shows alot of memorable clips from Disney flims. GMD being one of them. They show the seen where Basil in the clock tower and this stuff happens and other stuff happens and- Who am kidding? I don't know what the heck is going on in that scene but it does look good though.

This is my favorite Disney movie!

I am planning on getting this film on BOTH VHS and DVD! (The VHS copy will be the 1992 Classics edition, the cover artwork looks MUCH better on that one!)

Hey leave Teede alone she's awesome. ;)

I wondered why there wasn't a thread like this before, because it's not like this is the first time we heard about it. :)

I think I only seen this movie once and I can't remember it at all. I've heard it's a great movie so maybe I should rent or buy?

Teede - did you manage to get a copy of the sequel during your covert operation at Disney Toon Studios?

Hey now, if it weren't for her, you wouldn't have a sig.

We haven't heard from you in a while, Teede. Did your undercover mission at DisneyToon Studios go well, or were you on Mobius?

I wish that I could actually......you know......contribute to the discussion, but I've never seen the movie. I'm really tempted to because it was directed by my two favorite Disney directors.

The CGI elements (the clock gears)are actually drawn by a machine and then transferred and painted manually in the real world, not cels super imposed over a computer image like the Beauty and the Beast ballroom sequence (for example).

I have seen and enjoyed the TGM but it seemed lightweight to me. The main characters are fairly faceless and the best part is the villian, Ratigan, voiced by Vincent Price who always seems to shine in most of his movies. I do believe Vincent heart was on the stage where he felt it suited his talents more. However, Vincent was man of taste and the horror films were paying good money. He was spectular in these horror films even though I do believe Vincent thought these films to did not fully utilize all his talents. (I own all seven of Vincent/Corman Poe films.)

For some reason this movie just never clicked with me. I'm not sure what the reason was---I don't often watch detective films, so perhaps that's it but its just not one I've watched in ages, though I know the story.

However, the end theme "Goodbye So Soon" I do like for some odd reason or another. Perhaps it was because it reminded me of "So Long Farewell" from the Sound of Music when the children have to go to bed. *shrugs* Odd analogy. :P

Well as long as a computor helped drew it, I consider it CGI! :P

not CGI properly, but maybe the CGI´s grandpa...

Ok, now that we have talk and made a "The --insert movie title here--thread" what should we do now?
