"Human proportions" look creepy in any animated medium if you ask me.
And no, its not just because some of them had flesh colored eyes. There just something off putting about the whole idea to me.
The only reason you think it looks better than CG is that the imperfections that go along with hand drawn stuff often distracts from being too creepy. But they can choose any eye size they want.

No that's just the 70's. EVERYTHING in the 70's were fucking creepy.

If anything, 2D animation is MORE limited when it comes to major releases because of the time it takes to animate complex character designs. If Ursula were CGI (now, not then obviously) she would have eight tentacles instead of six. Characters would be more detailed, their clothing would have pattern... I understand what you're saying and I'm very much a fan of 2D animation but you can't discredit 3D animation because of style choices from the major animation companies.
I agree, but I'm not sure improving the detail of their clothes changes how effective the animation of their bodies/faces already is...? Yes, it would be nice if every Disney character could have clothes like Maleficent, but it's not necessary to the characters/story working, or even for the film to work visually.

I know I've said it before, but I am so sick of blondes.
I like the second picture, although the face does remind me of a porcelain doll.

I should have known people would be confused. To clarify, the art pieces circled in blue are official concept art for the movie while the ones circled in red are fashion sketches inspired by the official art, most probably for an upcoming fashion-related Disney project.

^ I already figured the second was some kind of concept art, because the one or two images we've seen of Elsa, her face didn't look like that. I suppose the fashion art will join those weird designs of the other princesses they had (same one that gave Ursula lipo, right?).

You mean the Designer Collection of dolls? I don't think so. The art style is different to those.

Maybe it's the sketch for a toddler doll?

Cinderella had those proportions and she looked wonderful.
There's nothing creepier than moving dolls or animation that looks like them.

It's kind of bizarre that those sketches look so amazing and the final character design looks awful. What happened along the way?

And normal skin color and Elsa is supposed to have icy skin color?

I'm guessing at the end,
she loses her powers, so she looks normal

Well, the story does have a Scandinavian setting, and there is that stereotype. It wouldn't be the first time Disney resorted to cliché.

Yes, she looked wonderful, but no, there was still a certain amount of exaggeration going on.
Most character designs that have actual appeal will exaggerate features to an extent. Cinderella actually has a large head in relation to the rest of the body; in her case the torso was shrunken down from that of a real human figure and was also thinned out. Now let's see what happens when we make match up the width of the shoulders in the two images:
Note how large her head is and even how small her waist remains. I'll be the first to point out that she's
relatively realistic as far as cartoon characters go, but I wouldn't go so far as to say she has realistic proportions. Part of the appeal of animation, at least for me, is the exaggeration seen in the character designs. I tend to agree with
Kyle in that designs that have proportions too close to realistic humans without enough exaggeration indeed look "creepy," or at the very least, are largely unappealing and tend to be utterly bland. (And on a side note, that's a problem I'm having with Blue Sky's
Epic, but that's for another thread I guess.)
* * *
Anyway, I was a lot more excited about seeing bits of
Tangled back in the day than I am now about
Frozen. I think part of it was the excitement of seeing how Disney handled a CG princess, and from what little we've seen about
Frozen I'm guessing there won't be much of a difference in that respect. I'm still looking forward to it regardless, I'm just not expecting any surprises.

Awesome post. enigmawing is is pretty much spot on. Considering I also draw sexy women a lot, this is very much definitely true when creating attractive humans in animated or cartooning format. Though it has exaggerations, the fundamental principals and rules are still there and applied as it would irl.

She always was blonde. You do know there are different shades of blonde, right?

I know both Anna "strawberry" & Elsa "platinum" are blondes. In that image though Elsa's hair looks golden. Even Anna, on the leaked poster, you can clearly see a white strip in one of here braids.

I think the white strip of hair on Anna must have been caused by Elsa somehow.
