Disney Duster wrote:DDivinity,Rapunzel, is Rapunzel's dress really German? I heard they use a French renaissance style on the film...maybe I'm wrong... Snow White's is very German though, right? Her film was definately German styled. I think Snow White's dress would be good if the colors were just...fixed a bit. If her yellow was a less bright gold, or white, and if her blues and reds were deep and purplish.
You might be right! To me Rapunzel's dress looks German, but I'm not sure what they modeled it after.

I actually like the red, blue combination of Snow's, but I didn't always. I think it grew on me more when I saw someone wearing the same colors in a Renaissance dress.

Well enigmawing I can't believe you can do that in paint.

Rapunzel, if you go to animated-views.com, you will find some articles on the art of Rapunzel on the front page. I took a quick look and it seems they were going for French Renaissance style, but in the end, just did whatever, you know what I mean? And so maybe they took some German styles and used them on her dress.

As for Snow White, I think red and blue look great together for her, but not red, blue and yellow! I think either red, blue, and white would look good, or, I kind of like this version posted, but instead of the brown with the yellow, I would have made it red, like the Gustaf Tenggren poster:

Make the brown in this red instead:

I'm sorry if I didn't make it clear in my post, but I work in Photoshop, not Paint. :) It's pretty much how I do most of my art these days.

I'm surprised that no one has yet to talk about Rapunzel. One HUGE advantage Rapunzel has is that with her movie being in CG, the animators can design costumes with lots of texture and fabrics that makes the wardrobe in the movie stand out.

Check out this article:

Funny how Rapunzel's dress technically falls into the peasant girl category, yet is is very rich, very textured and designed, almost like it cost Mother Gothel a fortune to design and make.

The TV Tropes page also mentions that her hair could be part of the costume, especially when the little girls braid it and put flowers on it. Rarely does hair compliment an outfit very well.

It's a very simple design but one that is striking, and again, I am surprised few have mentioned it.

I can't really say much about the design, because it probably fits the time period they were going for, I guess. But being part of a modern audience, with modern sensibilities, I didn't really like it. The color is especially eek. And some parts of it reminded me of scales for some reason, but I haven't seen the movie in a month or so.

Mostly, I just don't like the dresses that have corset-like tops (Ariel's blue dress, Aurora's peasant dress, Rapunzel's dress).

I do like the way they had her hair done up with the flowers though.

I'm sorry to say it but even though I was slightly excited that Rapunzel had all the possibilities of more textures and details in her costumes than ever before...in the end, her costume turned out to kind of suck.

I mean, I liked so many earlier versions of it better. I like the costume, I think it's need, but it could have been so much better, especially those puff sleeves, they just could have been done in a shorter, better looking way. And I really don't like the back of it, with the fabric sticking up under her bodice. I would think that would be so uncomfortable.

It's also just not the prettiest. I like it, but not that much.

I also think that Cinderella wears work clothes more than rags because she is okay doing the work her house needs, she's more dignified.

I don't know, I thought several of us mentioned her dress. I for one love it and all the details. And of course I love her hair too (my own is nearly ankle length), but I don't count her hair as being part of her wardrobe at all. Jasmine's is nearly as long as Rapunzel's when Rapunzel has hers in a braid. We could play with Jas's hair too...and Aurora's, and Ariel's, and well, everyones!!!

Yeah, the whole light pink and light purple scheme doesn't really work for me. Too Easter-eggy, or something. And then the fabric itself seems to be too satiny and shiny. It just reminds me of a child's princess costume. I mean, obviously that's what it's going to become -- I just would have hoped the original would look nicer.

I love Snow White's dress in the Gustaf Tenggren's poster it's so pretty! I like Cinderella's ball gown it's so classic and Belle's yellow gown. Ariel's shimmery dress when she gets out of the ocean at the end is nice and I like the design of Snow White's dress.

I wish they would use dark colors for a princess. I think they have gone through all the pastel colors for dresses now. Except no one is in apricot/pastel orange, and Belle's yellow might be too deep to be called pastel. Otherwise we have silver, pinks, pale blues, pale green, and Rapunzel's pale purple.

Maybe they think dark colors are not "innocent" enough.

Most likely, though they have no trouble dressing Cinderella in deep sea blue sometimes.

Colors are supposed to invoke a certain emotion. They certainly wouldn't use red or black, since most villains wear those colors.

Give them Neon colors like in the the 80's.
