That or make Sancho the comedic sidekick... which he technically was in the story. Yeah he did have a serious edge to him, but in every adaptation I've seen, Sancho was always treated as being comedic. The Bob Hoskins version by TNT from 1999 is an example of that.

The thing with Quijote is that it is both a comedic and dramatic story. The rise to madness is treated very seriously, but many of the adventures he embarks on are very comedic and exaggerated, all to reflect the fact that it was all a work of his mad imagination.

Which is why, I wouldn't want to see Disney attempt it, a fine balance is needed between the drama and the comedy, and studios rarely put it off.

Thats why there is a subcategory called dramedy which is a dramatic comedy or comedic drama.

Awful as this assumption may be, I have to agree (not that CG films are necessarily bad looking, mind you). Plus, due to basic legal reasons, I doubt that any book or story we list here would necessarily get picked up by Disney, as them taking the ideas of internet fans is technically them stealing ideas. However, they technically won't be able to steal my suggestions if I give them all stupid "contemporary" titles for the time as code names...

Like I said, the story of Don Quijote would be a nightmare to try and adapt due to how long and full of influential moments it has. It would take three movies just to do the whole story... and they would have to be 3 hours long too.

Hmmmm... I'm guessing Hansel and Gretel is in there. Either Baked or Candied. Peach is probably James and the Giant Peach. Thumbs up? The only thing I can think of with thumbs (well, sort of) is Thumbelina. I'm probably way off, but I'd like to hear what they all are, especially the obscurely un-American one.

I wonder how Disney would take on a classic Victorian story, such as something by Dickens or by the Bronte sisters? Or how about 19th-century American literature like Uncle Tom's Cabin? The Scarlet Letter?

Better yet, they should adapt an Edgar Allan Poe story! I can see it now: Disney's The Tell-Tale Heart, and the tagline can be, "...and you thought Hunchback was dark!"

Aside from the about 2 hour musical called Man of La Mancha...and Disney's would probably be a musical, too. Though I could see it not being one, like The Emporer's New Groove.

You know when I was younger, I always thought That Uncle Tom was Uncle Remus and vice versa. Or that I got the two mix up. I thought they we're same people.

Maybe it was the "uncle" that threw me off.

See, it is easier to adapt Don Quijote into live action because they can be as long or short as they want to be. In Spain they produced a TV mini-series that chronicled nearly all of the chapters in the book. Disney animated movies tend to be 90 minutes long, which means that they would have to sit down and pick what stories to tell in their adaptation.

I'd like to see them make one based on a Jane Austen novel as well as a live action movie of The Fox and the Hound and an Oliver and Company sequel about Oliver's life with Jenny and missing Dodger and the gang.

well this isn't really classic lit or folklore but like Pocahontas and Anastasia, a film based on another historical princess: Princess Elizabeth, specifically her childhood. But Disney would never do it, after all the criticism Pocahontas and Anastasia still gets...not to mention if they do make it all it takes is anyone digging up more past dirt like that Nazi Salute footagea few years ago and Disney has a disaster on their hands.

So many fairy tales come to mind like Sindbad the Sailor, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Rumpelstiltskin, Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, The Firebird, etc.

I know Brother Bear was originally supposed to be King Lear with bears. A blind father bear with his three daughters specifically. I wouldn't mind something like that and closer to The Lion King with the Shakespearean themes than the final Brother Bear turned out. Another story back in the 90s was Orpheus but with whales although to be honest, I'd prefer a human take on it since Disney has already bastardized Greek mythology once so now they could redeem themselves.

I'd also like to see Dracula adapted.

Oh, I'd love an animated version of Emma! Mansfield Park probably would've worked as one back in Walt's day; I can't picture it happening now because Fanny is such an incredibly passive character. I have a feeling Mrs. Norris would be hilarious as an animated character though.
