Did I say one fan was a redneck, etcetera...? No, I said all. You can call it stereotyping, that's your opinion. And I'm sorry, I tried to say what I said in the nicest way possible. It's just that country is a major insult, to MUSIC! That crap is unbearable!

People, especially a lot of younger people, tend to take the music they like very seriously, and that's fine. But they also tend to take their opinions and the opinions of others about that music a little too seriously.

I try to keep myself open to different genres of music, but to be honest I don't care for a lot of country or rap (although I like some Martina McBride and Eminem songs, for example). I don't worship it or roll my eyes at it, I just accept it for what it is and choose to like it or ignore it.

And you know what? Most of the industry takes itself a little too seriously anyway, but hey, they can afford to.

Not that I can't feel something powerful during a favorite song. Let other people do this without putting them down for liking what you don't. . . remember, there's someone out there that doesn't like what you're listening to.

Besides, most of the people I know think I'm completely nuts for listening to J-pop.

Well, there are stupid artists in every genre. It's just the country has THE current monopoly on every genre when it comes to clone artists. It's pop for straight, regilious, ultra-conservative old FARTS, who only sit back and critisize everything they don't understand. Quality country music is dead. There will never be another Chrystal Gayle, Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker, Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, or Garth Brooks. There is no more personality in country music. It's all "booze, sexy girls, shove boots up Sudam's and Bin Laden's butts", and of course they can't stop singing ABOUT country music and the good old days at the Grand Old Opry, the Chatahoochie... ARG! Don't get me started.

I'll totally agree with ya there, but stupidity over the arts isn't a fact, it's just an opinion. One person's doofus is another person's genius because we are all different. We've all had different experiences, and we all need different things to relate to.

And that's the funny thing about music; it doesn't have to be valid or have any depth to it to be appreciated by the masses, it's just gotta be catchy and make you feel something. And that's when I try to appreciate the music for what it is and not be so concerned about what it's "supposed to be."

I've seen too many people turn their nose up at a song just because they thought they were supposed to.

Actually I'm not surprised on memorizing the song. I remember about two summers ago I was a volunteer teacher's aide at one of the local elementary schools in my area, and in the school office there was a quilt (apparently made by the kids) with the 50 US states and their capitals hung on the wall.

The first thing that came to my mind was Wakko singing "The 50 US states and Their Capitals," but what really surprised me was that I was able to remember the entire song even though I hadn't watched Animaniacs for 5+ years.

Country music's roots extend back quite a ways and is an expression of American culture, or at least a part of it. There is a rich musical heritage there. Much of it uses the same basic 12 bar blues structure that R&B and Jazz are founded on. The lyrics usually target life's complications and use simplicity to express their feelings on it. Sure, there's ear candy, but you'll find that in almost any genre. It's also one of the most all-encompassing genres- it's hard to put barriers on what is country and what isn't. It may not be your cup of tea, but it's very much a legitimate musical expression and there's more to it than you acknowledge in your post. There's even more to it than I'm acknowledging in mine, but hey... it's late.

It is stereotyping. I'm not a fan but I've began to notice my best friend is starting to like country music and she's nothing how you describe how a country music fan is.

It's not just Pasta67's opinion. It's not a fact that all fans of country music are redneck hicks. That's a pretty arrogant and ignorant statement.

My best friend grew up on "old school" country and remains a big fan of a lot of it, but she also listens to punk, alternative, metal, "femme rcok," pop, and just about anything else you can think of, and she hardly qualifies as a red neck.

If you stop and really listen to country music, you'd find a lot of depth and complexities there. Something my friend once said is that the reason she likes a lot of country is that they actually tell emotional stories (as opposed to songs that play on other stations that say things like, "don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me," or ". . .bangin' on the bathroom floor.")

And speaking of which, I suddenly got in the mood to listen to Martina McBride's "Independence Day," an excellent song by any standards.. Of course, that's just my opinion.

Leonia - I've been listening to a lot of Weird Al lately since my boyfriend's been a little obsessed with Al's music video DVD.
