I agree with almost everything you said. I didn't say that HD-DVD *would* be the dominant format by 2007; I said that Disney expects it to be. However misguided that notion is, they have officially stated that they expect HD to take over by 2007 and that this rationale played a key role in their decision to up the Platinum line to two per year, so as to be done with the original lineup of 10 by the end of 2007.

Thus, we can assume that THEY are working towards getting special treatment done for all of the animated classics that they consider to be "top shelf" titles prior to HD taking over. So, I'd say it's a very strong possibility that Hercules could be the suprise SE this fall, or no later than early summer 2007 at the latest.

I don't think the first high definition dvd players are gonna be $7000... Right now there are high definition camcorders costing less than half of that. There's HD monitors selling for less than that too.

Actually when i saw this topic title about this 'retirement" of gold dvds a few weeks ago I saw it as the movement the sea does before bringing a hard wave ... But i decided not to even comment on that then. You may take that as however you like. It's just my opinion.

Seems hidef DVD has most everybody that has spent a lot of money on dvd scared so they prefrer it NOT to happen *shrug
btw Sony this past week has been saying that it would prefer to talk to the other camp and make an unified front instead of a war so maybe things might change.

And for all of those who apparently see HD as a threat of it being a either one or the other proposition, where do you get the idea that if HD shows up DVD owners will have to worry? They're releasing Disney titles on VHS now, no? They'll still release Hercules SE on DVD too if they do it on HDVD also!

Wouldn't it be pretty safe to assume that the High Def DVD Players will be able to play DVD's of today.. Would make sense.. Would mean greater sales down the road when someone knows they can still play all the "old" DVD's if they upgrade the DVD player.

Lightyear - it was my understanding one of the two technologies, I guess it must be blu ray was not backwards compatable. Although that was a couple of years ago and that mayhave changed by now.

Mr.Toad, I posted a while ago on some Blu thread a link where it explained that Phillips (A Blu partner) had come up with an optical pickup that played red white and blue lasers

(CDs use infrared ("white", invisible or transpartent) DVDs use red, and you don't see any truble with DVD players playing CDs.)

Will HDDVDs and BRDs (Blu-Ray Disc, for lack of a better acronym) be region-encoded?

I didn't state that all HD-DVD players would be $7000, I gave a starting price range. The high-end, fancy ones will be that price (I remember a few DVD players that were that high when they first came out). But the lower end ones will probably start around 2500 to 3000 at the begining.

Both formats will continue to be supported by studios, until very late in the game, I have no doubt. But still, I have to question why do we need a new format already? It doesn't make any sense to me to be bringing out new formats every 6 or 7 years. I think that at first this is going to be a format for the tech-savvy people, and the general population is going to ignore it for a while.

In terms of Sony coming together with the other side, I'm not sure honestly. I think the battle lines may already be drawn. But I may be surprised yet

Jake Lipson, I'm sorry. I misunderstood what you said, I thought you were stating that HD-DVD would take over by then, sorry. However, it's still good that I posted my points, because now people realize that there is no need to panic.

I personally hope that HD-DVD will completly fail (much like Divx) and companies will get the idea that the average person does not want to upgrade their collections every few years (I know they'll be backwards compatible, but still, lets face it most people will begin upgrading their collections anyways)

Why would Walmart stop carrying Disney movies? That would be crazy I would think.

I was just at Walmart the other day and they had a bunch of Disney DVDs. None at really great prices, but they had them!

Nope, I went in, I looked all around, I asked and they said, we were told to pull all our Disney movies some time ago and send them back. They had a whole section just w/Disney DVD's but they said they took it down. I have no idea why, but it made me mad. It's a Super Wal-Mart too. They just put in the 2nd biggest Wal-Mart in the US about 20 miles away and I plan to check it out sometime though.
