I guess it's time for me to write that wanted Disney-coming-out-soon list.

Here's to hoping for a great new transfer with some new bonus features!

Holy Crap, what a corny subtitle.
As I haven't seen all of The Great Mouse Detective in years, I'm willing to bet that the title comes from some line in the movie. Or at least, I hope.

Mystery in the Mist edition?
Another stupid subtitle that will take its place among:
Pixie-Powered Edition
Big Top Edition
Enchanted Musical Edition
The Friendship Edition
High-Flying Edition
The New Groove Edition
Big Wave Edition

Well, I just sold my old copy & got enough from the sale to buy this goofy named edition. I won't hold my breath waiting for the blu ray since it could take Disney 5 more years for that at current release pace.

It appears that the special features are as follows:
1. All-New Digital Restoration (it looks like it is being presented in the 1.78:1 aspect ratio which differs from the previously released 1.66:1 aspect ratio)
2. New "So You Think You Can Sleuth" Game
3. The Making of THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE
4. "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind" Sing-Along Song
5. Dylan and Cole Sprouse: Blu-ray is Suite!
The film will also be featuring a Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound with optional French and Spanish language tracks.
The original theatrical aspect ratio is still a mystery to me on this one. Was it 1.75:1, 1.66:1, 1.85:1? Regardless, it appears we are receiving none of the theatrical release ratio options and are forced to watch it in the widescreen TV aspect ratio of 1.78:1.
Any thoughts?

So no new bonus features! That 'making of' will be the recycled fluff piece from the previous edition.

Which one is the correct aspect ratio? How was the quality of the previous edition?

Thus, I am still holding onto my DVD copy of TGMD. Until they come to their senses and stop being hypocritical and decide to release a Blu-ray of it.

My thoughts:
1. Worst. Edition name. Ever. Seriously, I "WTF!?"ed pretty hard.
2. Crappy bonus features. I hate to say it, but I'm good with the old one, even with its horrible "Disney Knock-off" looking cover. I see absolutely no reason to upgrade here.
It's a shame, too.

So it's trimmings are more important than a new restored transfer?

I thought that the old DVD looked okay. Was it perfect? No, but it wasn't bad enough to detract from my enjoyment of the film. I'm not spending $20 on something that may look better, but doesn't really offer me anything new.

Well, it's easy for me since I never saw TGMD much less owned it. I find myself in that position a lot more these days because I've just started a DAC collection. The Special Edition subtitle is weird though. They should have just left it as "Special Edition".

A new restored transfer is by far the most important thing, especially if it were on a blu ray/dvd combo pack.

What does a special feauture with the Sprouse twins pimping out blu-ray have to do with this movie, I mean seriously I would love to know.
It's not even a movie where you have the choice between blu-ray and dvd, which makes that special feature even less useful. Kind of a shame because a slightly better transfer just isn't gonna cut it for me - while a blu-ray release would have.
Disney seems like one of the biggest proponents of blu-ray - yet they also have the biggest amount of dvd-only films still coming out. I get that the classics need new transfers and all, and that those cost money, but it wouldn't hurt to release a few each year on blu-ray (who aren't in the Diamond Line). The '90s films hardly need restoration anyway.

I would care more about it being a new transfer it were a hi-def one. Since it's not, I have zero desire to buy this on DVD again. And seriously, that's one of the worst special edition names I've ever heard. It's like some exec was watching the movie and said "Hey, this is a mystery... and it's foggy... OH MAN!!!"
Maybe it will at least have better cover art than the original DVD release.

That is corny. Instead, they should have called it:
The Great Mouse Detective: The Sherlock Holmes Story without Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law Edition. Ya I know it's a bit long, but with
Sherlock Holmes in theaters, it's a little obvious Disney wants to try and make a little money by unvaulting their version.

It was probably 1.85:1, I don't think cinemas could project anything smaller than that anymore. And whatever the ratio is, 1.85:1 or 1.75:1, 1.78:1 fits between them and fills the screens, so does it really matter? I think that the re-released DACs will be in 1.78:1 too, whether they were made in 1.66:1 and projected in 1.85:1 or not.

Like I said in the Pete's Dragon thread, Disney's not going to randomly choose this title out of all of them to release on Blu-ray right now. They're clearly only focusing on select DAC"s. Did anyone honestly think this was going to come to Blu-ray right now? Exactly. The complaints are starting to get old.
