That is why I have no plans in upgrading to Blu-ray anytime soon.
The prices REALLY need to drop before I go and start to by Blu-ray discs!

I am still keeping my 2-Disc Special Edition DVD.
NO plans in giving it away or selling it.

The only real reason to upgrade to Blu-ray, in my opinion, is for better video and sound. The BD Live/Profile 2.0 features don't matter to me right now. In my opinion Profile 1.1 is fine. Blu-ray is dropping in price, but it still has a way to go.

The new PE looks beautiful. The color correction they did on it is perfection!

Watching it I feel a huge distance, like I want to press my nose to the tv to get a better view of their faces. It's really like watching the movie from a huge distance. Which makes it less intense.

This screenshots for example, adding 1 guard on each side doesn't really add something. It just looks like the end of the drawing now. I would rather see a more intense image of Maleficent like it's on the left, instead of the far away image on the right.
There are much more scenes that have better example screenshots, but this one shows the face issue. Others show the superfluous/redundant material on the side better.

I understand that this might have worked back then on huge cinema screens and no home entertainment whatsoever, but now it just doesn't work.

^i think you're exaggerating quite a bit. At most, the image was only "shrunk" about 10%. Plus that example, the extra guard makes it more symmetrical, so it doesn't seem so right-center anymore. I personally think the right screen feels more intense, but that has to do with the stronger colors as well.

I reckon this new aspect ratio frames the film really well. In the SE DVD there were a lot of half-faces, horizontal branches awkwardly positioned and random rabbit ears popping out of nowhere. It really feels less claustrophobic imo. Now for a film like Lady and the Tramp, the 2.55:1 frame seems kinda unnecessary (although it what makes it so unique) because the backgrounds were so bland, but when it's this beautiful, I seriously don't mind

Doesn't anyone think the menus should be in CGI like on Snow White's DVD? I'm dissapointed. They once tried to make our favorite fantasy worlds into 3D menus but now they've stopped.

I am slightly worried about the less sharp image, but we have to watch it for ourselves. Matt, even if the DVD isn't as sharp as we want, the Blu-ray will be even sharper and better, so when you finally have a Blu-ray player it will be really worth it! But I guess Sleeping Beauty will also be around for some time, at least this year, though I doubt the price will drop.

Marky, the old 2003 SE actually was less picture than the artists intended. The new 2008 PE has a little more picture than they inteneded. But I'm saying the artists still wanted us to see more than the 2003 SE. On a big widescreen TV, you might not worry about smaller faces or anything, though. It probably looks the best that way.

Wait, so Lady and the Tramp had, or has, on the current DVD, the ratio that Sleeping Beauty now will have on DVD? That wide?! And you think Lady and the Tramp needs it because it is so bland, but Sleeping Beauty could do without it? Or Lady and the Tramp could do without it, and Sleeping Beauty needs it?

Im still debating to either buy Blu-ray or stick to dvd.
What ever format i do get im glad that this is getting a re-release (along with the confirmation of Pinocchio for next year) as i've really only started to collect serious again just recently (used to collect the vhs editions) and im not willing to pay the stupid prices offered on amazon + ebay for the older edition.

I was wondering that Disney have deliberately not made the dvd edition as sharp as they possibly could in order for more people to buy the Blu-ray edition? Its only a thought but would make sense as there is a definite difference in sharpness between the old and new edition.

Disney Duster,did you noticed that Brair Rose's dress is gray? it's intersting how they found a shade of color that is similar to both gray and purple,so maybe Cinderella can have gray/white dress?.

Perhaps after the embarrassing CGI in the menus for The Lion King, Disney got wise and went for the 2D look again.

Lady and the Tramp's a CinemaScope picture, and was shot anamorphically onto 35mm film. Depending on the soundtrack attached, it can have both a 2.55:1 and 2.35:1 ratio. A magnetic soundtrack yields a 2.55:1 ratio, while an optical one yields a 2.35:1 ratio. The old Limited Issue DVD had a 2.35:1 ratio, but contained a 5.1 remix audio track instead of the 3-channel audio track (the optical soundtrack) that would have been attached to the 2.35:1 print. The Platinum DVD has the 2.55:1 ratio, and strangely, includes that 3-channel audio track, as well as the horrid 5.1 Disney Enhanced crap. Stupidly, Disney did not issue the 4-channel stereo track (magnetic soundtrack) that would have accompanied 2.55:1 prints.

Of course, I could easily point out that neither 2.55:1 or 2.35:1 would be the "complete image", as the film is shot with a 2.66:1 original camera negative ratio before the addition of the soundtrack reduces its image to 2.55:1 or 2.35:1...but I won't say a word, lest we suddenly get a flurry of "So there was more picture filmed than what we get now? Disney, re-issue this with the complete picture, dammit!". This likely accounts for why the pan&scam version on the DVD sometimes offers slightly more image on the top and bottom in a few scenes, even if it's cutting off half of it on the sides.

Yep, Disney recorded a new commentary with Leonard Maltin, John Lasseter, and Andreas Deja for the DVD. The Blu-Ray will also have a visual commentary too with them in it. Although I'm sure they'll probably intersplice other archival interviews too with Eyvind Earle, Mary Costa, Marc Davis, Ollie Johnston, and Walt like the format they did on the Jungle Book commentary.

I wouldn't mind if they did that, though I would have preferred if it was just a three-person discussion throughout the film.

Then again, I would have also preferred if the Audio Documentary/Commentary from the old release was carried over (making Sleeping Beauty the second Platinum to have two commentaries for the film).

It is the March 2010 Platinum. Fantasia 2000 will also be re-released during that time, and Destino will finally be released released after being delayed twice on home video (it was part of the canceled second wave of the Legacy Collection DVDs, then it was replaced in the Wave 8 Treasures with the Annette set).
