I'm pretty shocked and also disappointed this is coming out. When I first heard the news I was like; "wtf...didn't they just come out with the Big Top edition?" Ah well, guess this is great for Dumbo fans, still I think there are lots of other DAC's that are more deserving of a re-release *coughHercandHunchcough*. Either or, guess for the major collectors here you can combine all your Dumbo DVD's and create the even bigger big top editon.

I am sooo glad that I didn't sell my 60th Anniversary DVD. I thought that it'd be a 2-DVD set! What a foolish person I am!
And I agree- Dumbo doesn't look quite himself on the cover. I mean, he doesn't not look like himself, but, to me, he just looks...a little stiff, maybe? I don't know.
DisneyJedi wrote:Hmm.... since Dumbo's getting an SE Blu-ray, you suppose Great Mouse Detective and The Black Cauldron will get the same next year?
If they do, they'll proabably get this DVD/Blu-ray combo, huh? I guess it depends how many of the bonus features are put on the DVD...
Ugh, not to make this about Blu-ray vs. DVD, but ever since I read the
Up review yesterday and read about all the bonus features on the Blu-ray, I'm starting to be envious of Blu-ray owners. I'm still not willing to buy one or an HD-TV (even though this monitor technically is one), but I'm jealous...which I suppose is my own fault. If there were more behind-the-scenes books (some movies have them, but others just don't), then I wouldn't be as upset...I wonder how long Disney will continue at least putting their movies on DVD. At least that's nice of them...Not much different than VHS vs. Laserdisc, I suppose, in terms of some people getting bonus features. Total blabbing, sorry.
goofystitch wrote:Yeah, both of those releases will be DVD only. I'm sure they will hit Blu-Ray in a few years when Disney starts to run out of classics to release on Blu-Ray. But since Blu-Ray only accounts for about 10% of the market share of home video, Disney is only releasing big titles in HD that are guaranteed to make money. Disney was quick to release these films to DVD because they didn't need extensive restorations, but they do for HD.
How do you know? How was
Dumbo originally announced? I just checked: First as a Platinum Edition, and then "On Blu-ray Hi-Def and 2-Disc DVD".

Why do we ever believe what WDHE says? I'd love for those titles to be released as jam-packed DVDs (compared to what they have now...although TBC's photo gallery is nice), but I'm not holding my breath.

As long as there's a substantial profit to be had.

No "The Reluctant Dragon!?" Nooooo....! I've never seen that whole movie, only the short (which I loved!). It's sad, really. If they don't re-release it somehow, I'll try to pick up the WDT set, but at this point, I think I'd be happy with just the DMC exclusive barebones!

Actualy Margos, you wan'na go with the WDT: Reluctant Dragon, as it's a major treat for the Disney animation lovers, the film itself is quite amazing (educationaly) and course the title short is a classic as well.

I know.... I'm just saying that I'd settle if I had to, I want to see and own it so badly. but yeah, I love that title short! The Dragon is another character that deserves far more attention than he gets!

If I'm not mistaken, the DMC Exclusive release was just the short, not the entire feature film. The only way to get the full length feature on DVD is to get "Behind the Scenes at the Walt Disney Studios."

No, the DMC exclusive was the film. When I was about to get it from DMR, it said 70 Minutes.

It is the feature film, but without bonus features. They no longer sell it, which fills me with sadness.

That's used on Blu-ray. It's an audio commentary with additional short videos playing on the screen while you're watching the movie. I do hope we'll get more bonus material than just the commentary.

I've stuck with my VHS copy for a long time, but I hope this release will be better than the Big Top Edition. I mean, they used the same menus! I do like this cover art, however. It's very simple. I also think though, that Dumbo (along with Mary Poppins) has had a lot of releases. So this isn't being marketed as a PE? I seem to remember a news release from UD saying it was replacing Aladdin being squeezed in...

So far the following has been classified by BBFC for the 70th Anniversary Edition:
New Special Features:
-Picture-in-Picture Commentary (1:03:56)
-DisneyView Intro by James Coleman (0:53)
-Taking Flight (26:59)
-Mouse's Tale (5:20)
-Rites of Passage (2:59)
-Deleted Song (3:51) - likely to be "Spread Your Wings"
-Game: What Do You See?
-Game: What Do You Know?
60th Anniversary/Big Top Edition Special Features:
-Audio Commentary with John Canemaker
-
The Reluctant Dragon's "Sound Design" excerpt (5:57)
-1941 Trailer (1:18 )
-1949 Trailer (2:12)
And the following were features from the 60th Anniversary Edition and/or the Big Top Edition that are not classified (yet) by BBFC for the 70th Anniversary Edition. I have a feeling some of them likely won't be carried over.
60th Anniversary Edition:
-Celebrating Dumbo (14:51)
-Walt Disney 1954 Television Introduction (1:04)
-Dumbo Art Gallery
-Silly Symphony: The Flying Mouse (9:21)
-Silly Symphony: Elmer Elephant (8:31)
-Music Video: "Baby Mine" - Michael Crawford (2:53)
-Sing-Along: "Look Out For Mr. Stork" (2:35)
-Sing-Along: "Casey Jr." (2:33)
-Dumbo DVD Storybook: Dumbo's Big Discovery
Big Top Edition:
-Music Video: "Baby Mine" - Kassie dePaiva & Jim Brickman (4:00)
-DisneyPedia: My First Circus
Given the short length of Dumbo, I hope the Picture-in-Picture Commentary is also on the DVD, similar to how they presented the "Inside Walt's Story Meetings" for
Bambi.

I hope that Celebrating Dumbo, Walt's TV introduction, and the art galleries are retained on the 70th Anniversary Edition. And I'm most excited to hear that there will be a picture-in-picture commentary. Escapay may be correct in his hopes that it will be on DVD as well. In the past, haven't they been classified as "CineExplore" when it is Blu-Ray only? I know that the Cheetah Girls: One World had a PIP commentary on the DVD. And that would make a lot of sense as to why the DVD is 2-disc and the Blu-Ray is 1-disc. On DVD, the PIP would need to be a whole separate copy of the film, but the Blu-Ray can run it with Java over the single copy of the film.

I hope Walt's TV introduction is on there but as Snow White has shown us, Disney seems to drop those types of extras

Not formally, but when Disney classifies features with the BBFC, it's pretty much a sure thing that they will be on the set.
