I guess now we know what she was talking about:
Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote:I have to say, I agree. If you can, watch the movie first. Avoid all spoilers. Enjoy the movie exactly as it was meant to be enjoyed. Then come home and play the soundtrack until 2023.

I guess this was what she was referring to:

And might also explain why they didn't work on Wish.

I've seen people on Twitter complain about WDW's slowness (bordering on apathy) at having new characters show up, and the speculation I've seen is that there's just less incentive to entice travelers with them, since it's a tourist destination and guests have trips planned regardless. Meanwhile, Disneyland is more likely to get new characters (apparently Mei is coming there soon) because it's so local-heavy and they need reasons to entice people to go and go soon. I kind of get it, but I don't see why we can't have it both ways, although I think there are rumors that Mirabel will replace Merida soon.

Mirabel is a much better character than Merida, so hopefully that ends up being the case.
I know you're talking about the parks, not the Princess Line, but I wouldn't mind if Merida was pushed out of that either. I still think Disney's going to have a problem with too many characters in the line soon, making merchandise less streamlined because the characters can't all show up at once from product to product. They haven't even added Anna and Elsa into it yet (which will happen once Frozen merch calms down over time), then there's Asha here and I think they plan to add Raya, too, if they haven't already. Merida is the natural first choice to get the boot, imo, since she isn't a WDAS character anyway.
But who knows, with what feels like Anastasia may someday be added to the line, perhaps Disney doesn't care if the line has 20+ characters or not? If so, I hope Megara and Jane are put back in someday, perhaps add Alice and Lilo, too. If they do add Anastasia someday, I say add Thumbelina and Crysta from FernGully while they're at it for that matter (they should own those as part of FOX, right?), which would make using Tinker Bell again--like they did in the past--not so odd anymore since Crysta and Thumbelina are also fairies.

Hmm... hypothetically, if they add Anastasia to the princess line, would they revitalize the Fairies line with Crysta and Thumbelina?
*Edit* I meant to mention this in regards to the costume discussion: At least at Disneyland,
Lightyear-Buzz, from the new movie, had/has a face character. Weird how he did but not SW. Just wanted to add that.

Skye Roberts suggests that Wish will have a multicultural cast and won't be focused on one county or one racial group (so the Kingdom of Rosas will be similar to Avalonia from Strange World):

Well, it was not a surprise. The film looked like it was going to be a hybrid of various cultures and not a specific one. And I don`t mean to disrespect.

A new trailer for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles came out and it has the "2D style", which might indicate how Wish will probably look (it kind of look similar to that small peak we saw that leaked from D23):

I don’t know. Another animation test for Wish I saw at D23 with Valentino showed the animation style more akin to Paperman and how fluid the movement was in that short.

I am really excited about this movie, but I have a hard time believing them on those "2D style" reports, I think it will end up looking just like every other Disney CGI movie.
I am also not sold on the crossover theory, I think older Disney movies will only be referenced to, like in "Disenchanted", but on a larger scale.

Not like they appear on a lot of merch all together, the only thing that may look crowded would be the official website.

Big Screen Leaks/One Take News has confirmed Grace Randolph’s report that Chris Pine will voice the villain in Disney’s Wish:
https://onetakenews.com/2023/03/24/chri ... exclusive/.
That just confirmed Grace Randolph’s scoop about that from a month ago along with also confirming it will have the classic animation style and will be a great movie.

It's really disingenuous to call it an "exclusive" when Grace Randolph said it a month ago.
I also don't understand how it's "confirmed" when it's just another scoops/leaker site, the only ones who can confirm it are Disney, or at least a news outlet like Variety/ Deadline/ Hollywood Reporter.

There's an extended version of the official concept art released by Disney on that link where we can see a bit more of the city, as this
Twitter account noticed.
And I don't know if this other artwork has been posted. I remember seeing it behind Ariana DeBose in the leaked D23 performance, but I hadn't spotted Asha and Valentino there on the right. I guess Star is also in it.

By the way,
apparently, the movie will be titled
Wish: El poder de los deseos (Wish: the power of dreams) in Spain. It's the same they did here with
Frozen, for example; keeping the original title, but adding a subtitle that explains it for the people who don't understand English. According to
IMDb, it'll also have a different title in Vietnam and Russia, where it'll be called
The Kingdom of Wishes. I doubt the movie will be released in Russia, though.

The extended version of that concept art Disney officially released is slightly modified. Notice the placement of the building below Asha's legs compared to the original. While I like the character and production design, the fairy tale setting, and the return of the traditional villain, the unappealing animation style, the tired plot, the fanservice, the lack of romance, and the bland music prevent me from getting excited about this just yet. I hope the trailer changes that.

Don't you prefer this animation style to the standard CGI?

Definitely not. I hate the stylized CG used in The Bad Guys, Puss in Boots 2, and TMNT: Mutant Mayhem. The only case where it worked and complimented the narrative was Spider-Verse.

I understand what you mean, truthfully I even found Spider-Verse's animation a little distracting, I don't think "Twos" work on CGI that well. I just don't understand if they want to make a movie in "2D style", why not just make it actually hand drawn?
I am also worried about all the other things you mentioned like the story, the music and the fan service. I did pre order the art book because I thought that the art they presented at D23 was beautiful, but I may cancel my order if I don't like the teaser or the trailer.
I guess only time will tell. I hope Disney is smart enough to release the teaser before The Little Mermaid.

I wouldn't say the animation style of Spider-verse "suited the narrative" so much as it just looked pretty? The same way I felt about Paperman back when. I think medium can exist for its own sake.
Honestly, the whole "the narrative will justify the medium" thing was just PR spin BS from Disney / Lasseter / Iger back in the 2010s when they would say any lie to put the fork in hand-drawn animation. Because it wasn't even true with those films: hand-drawn animation would've been better with Tangled (hair always looks better in hand-drawn, sorry, compare Ariel's hair to Rapunzel's and it's not much contest which is more aesthetically pleasing; not to mention the big eyes thing they also copied from Ariel not looking quite as good in 3D), Frozen (this one could go either way since ice fractals looks pretty in 3D, but the Mary Blair-esque designs in some of the backgrounds along with some full-fledged drawings of the characters make me think it would've been even more beautiful in hand-drawn), WIR (old school animations for video games were closer to hand-drawn), and BH6 (comic books = hand-drawn). Moana is another one like Frozen that could go either way, but personally, I think the ocean locales in TLM and Pinocchio are much more beautiful than anything in Finding Nemo / Dory or Moana. *shrug* Zootopia is really the only one that actually suits 3D very well based on story, what with the scope of the city and the urban look.
That concept artwork is really pretty. Valentino is much cuter there than the main design. I like the tassels that are a part of Asha's dress, hopefully they keep those. My initial thought was that they reminded me of the Queen from Snow White, and then I remembered that film was a big inspiration for this one in a lot of ways. She also has close to the same shade of the Queen for her dress color. I wonder if this might mean Asha will become a Queen like Elsa (and later Anna) rather than a Princess by the end of the film as a callback to Snow White and as part of the 100th anniversary (a look back to how far female protagonists in their films have come so to speak, where the female character with power in SW is evil versus good in Wish)? IDK, I'm leaning towards there won't be a love interest of either gender now.

Personally I'd defend that The Last Wish's art style also complemented the story's tone. It was a storybook come to life that also visually distinguished itself from the more photorealistic Shrek universe. I would argue the frame rate slowing down in moments was awkward - but then Spider-Verse had that same issue.
I don't think you need to reduce frame rates when doing CG/hand drawn hybrids. I think studios think that's what they should do because Spider-Verse did it and it's currently a game of copy/paste. I don't know how Disney's Wish is doing during production but I don't think the animation will look bad in stills; it may look awkward in final shots (depending on the aforementioned frame rate.)

I'd also add Pocahontas and Eris from Sinbad (for a DreamWorks example). For better or worse their most memorable characteristics are how flowy their hair is.

I’m not sure I fully understand the statement, but twos work fine in CGI. I prefer to work in threes or even fours, but for some of my faster shots I use twos. Some shots are even done in ones, like there was one in Toy Story 3 done by Victor Navone with Andy done in ones. I do agree with Sotiris though, stylized CGI just destroys all the detail you can do in CGI.

I think it’s probably because they don’t have enough experienced talent to do a full movie. I mean, it was a bit of a struggle to make Enchanted, and that was more than 15 years ago.

I think comparing Ariel’s hair to Rapunzel’s hair isn’t very fair. 2D animation was at its height with TLM and
Tangled was the first WDAS movie. Hair rigging, grooming, simulation and shading were just starting out.

No, you don’t need to reduce frame rates in CGI; I think they just do that to make it look more like hand-drawn.
(How can you possibly mention DreamWorks on a
Disney forum?

)
