Phew! In that case I'm happy as I don't like the zoomed in UK edition and this seems to be the only way to get the OAR in PAL format... Just checked my order status and both DVDs are on their way to me from France. I'll let you know when they arrive...

You can also get other european 1-disc versions like the danish with the OAR.

Obviously BV UK decided that us Brits would prefer the "family friendly widescreen" instead of OAR! Or perhaps they just wanted to be different to the rest of Europe...?

...and I heard that the Spanish "Brother Bear" DVD comes with the movie in
foolscreen! So it seems that most of the european countries get different aspects...

fullscren ? you sure ? Nobody got Brother Bear in fullscreen on DVD...

Yes, I'm sure. I have a friend that lives in Spain and he told me that... he was sooooo furious!

Folowing what i know, brother bear technicaly could not fit an 1.33:1 screen.
Is because that even the VHS versions are being released in 1.66:1 format.

Actually, it could. But, for some reason, Disney decided to release the cropped version in the 1.66:1 widescreen format ("family friendly" format, as they call it).
As for the Brazilian VHS being widescreen, it seems Disney is releasing its new releases in widescreen... I've seen "The Lion King 1 1/2" VHS and it is in widescreen as well.

Aren't you mistaken with the "family friends" aspect ratio which was not fullscreen but which was wider ?
Disney have preferd done this retouched aspect ratio for standart TVs than the regular fullscreen. But here, on standart TVs, there's still some empty black space in the regular TV sets.

Well, I'll have to ask to my friend... he told me last week that he was so mad because it was fullscreen... Let's see what he tells me, or maybe there's any Disney fan from Spain in this board that purchased the "Brother Bear" DVD from there?

Well, it's taken a whole week but my DVD orders from alapage.com arrived safely a few minutes ago. They were delivered to my door by Royal Mail and thankfully there was no import duty to pay. In fact, there was no customs sticker on the package.
Both items, Peter Pan (2 disc) and Brother Bear (3 disc), were shrinkwrapped and a wanadoo French internet CD-ROM was also enclosed in the package - 14.90 Euro a month for ADSL. Hey, I'm paying wanadoo (UK) 17.99 GBP a month for my broadband!
Anyway, I'm very happy to have these exclusive Disney DVDs in my collection - can't wait to check them out...

You don't need to pay any duty on EU packages, as the tax is taken at source.

Yes! The €29.99 price tag is just for the DVDs. The shipping ("Frais de Port") on the two items I ordered came to €10.76 which is 7.30 GBP. Not cheap, but a lot more convenient than travelling through the Euro tunnel and trying to find a shop that still has these DVDs for sale!

Is the only difference between the UK edition of Brother Bear and the French 'Prestige' edition the film being presented correctly in cinemascope on the french dvd? Or does the french dvd also include the visual commentary and the 'Paths of Discovery' featurette, which were both on the US release but absent from the U.K dvd?

Yes the only difference is the OAR on the French set. The making-of featurette is not complete either (compared to the R1's).
An advice : if you plan to buy or rebuy Brother Bear, wait for the French 2-Disc Collector's Edition of the movie which is to be released in December. This set is to feature at least as many features as the Region 1 set, and maybe more... Even if it doesn't, you'll win a nicer packaging than the R1 has.
