I acquire my dvds through the optional payment program, AKA stealing. It's saving me tons of money, and half the fun is taking it. And when I sell the dvds on e-bay it just makes it more worthwhile. Which brings up a good question, would anyone like $8 dvds? 8)

Ah yes, there are plenty of names for it. I just felt like making one up at the spur of the moment. :P

I buy my DVDs from shops all the time, because I live right next to a big shopping mall. Never bought them online.

Since I live in Hong Kong, it's hard to get overseas discs. I once thought of opening an account at Amazon so I could get some R1 discs but then I found this great shop Hong Kong Records, and it's got sooo many overseas discs, I don't need to get my R1 DVDs all the way from the US to here. 8)

Almost my all DVDs are bought online from my filmclub. I'm just too lazy to go to store and pick a DVD. Or if there's something really cheap I can go there. :)
Here in Finland DVDs are really expensive (like 28€ each) which is $34. Some DVDs maybe even more expensive. I try to buy DVDs that are on sale. Usually the cost 16€ which is $20.

No, I don't sell my DVDs. Even if I don't watch them that much I still want to keep them because I have paid a lot of them.

I'm sure you're probably joking, but I have to ask- are you serious?

I planted a lone gold collection "Melody Time" disc a couple of years ago, and have now got quite a good DVD Tree going. By carefully pollinating and cross breeding each harvest, you can create most of the DVDs you want.

For example, I'm crossing a "Limited Edition Collection Mulan" with an "Sleeping Beauty Special Edition" and it looks like a "Mulan:Special Edition" will be available for picking in a few weeks. Sadly, I used the trailer less UK "Sleeping Beauty" disc, so I'm not expecting any trailers on the new Mulan disc.

It's not all success though. I managed to sucessfully create a "Lion King Platinum Edition", but I think the combination of the "Limited Edition Simba's Pride", plus "Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet" and the hard to navigate "Memento Limited Edition" wasn't the best choice: the menu system on my "Lion King" disc was a complete mess and totally illogical. And sometimes, two good films can combine to make a disappointing DVD - case in point a cross of "Trading Places" and "Ghostbusters Special Edition" resulted in the disappointing "Haunted Mansion". Thankfully I selected the superior "Trading Places", I dread to think what horrors would have resulted if I selected "Doctor Dolittle" instead!

I'm hoping a cross-pollenation of the UK "So Dear to My Heart" combined with "Glory: Collector's Edition" and a splash of the barebones "Gone with the Wind" disc will result in a DVD of "Song of the South" in the next 6-12 months.

That depends

Wall Mart,
Sam´s
Blockbuster
"alternative" sellers

It depends of the cost, expectations and most of all, if they have it

My husband works at Music World so we use his discount:D:D sometimes I get stuff at Costco or Future shop if his store doesn't have it though. About half of our collection is gifts though.

I buy my DVDs both by online store and in a bricks and mortar store.

Online:

Amazon (US and UK)
Ezy DVD
Vidz Of Oz
Sometimes direct from the distributor if they have an online store

B&M (from most likely to least likely, due to the pricing by the retailer)

K-Mart
Target
Myer
David Jones
HMV
Sanity/Virgin

I try to stay away from buying retail as much as possible. Just a waste of money IMO. I almost always buy from half.com, ebay, or amazon.com's marketplace sellers. The last time I bought retail was for the Wave 3 Walt Disney Treasures. I don't take chances with those. But everything else you can get the day it's released for several dollars less, including shipping. Here are some examples of movies I bought on release day, or the day after, including shipping:

Squanto A Warrior's Tale: $12
Three Musketeers (animation): $13.50
Night Crossing: $13.50
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: $15.50

I like to buy from retail stores when the price is similar, so that I can see the merchandise and pick the copy in best condition.

Retail stores I frequent for DVDs: Best Buy (Yay Reward Zone!), Target, and the occasional Wal-Mart

Online: Amazon, Amazon Marketplace, eBay, Buy.com, Half.com

Bump.

I pick up my DVDs in a variety of places. I used to go to retailers to buy DVDs, including HMV, Sainsbury's, WH Smith and Music Zone. However, although I still buy DVDs from normal shops, I do buy movies on the Internet more often now, especially at www.play.com. The prices are slightly cheaper and as I can't drive yet, going to the shops to buy DVDs is a bit hectic. Plus, I really need to watch some of my unwatched DVDs soon so no more buying for a bit.

Walmart mostly.

The ones I purchase online are hard to find or cheaper. But mostly I buy anime online. Reason? If you go to Suncoast for example, you'll find them at $30 each one. Not to mention collections: $100 or more. Online I find them for $15 each and collections range from $50 to $90.

Altough I use mainly yahoo.shopping to find the best prices. I've ordered from different stores there just because they had the cheapest price and I never had any problem.

Righ now I found: bestprices.com; it has nice prices. But the best one is deepdiscountdvd; they really have the best prices on the net. Plus S&H is FREE!!! But.... I suggest all to use at least 5 days delivery here. If you choose regular service it will take a very LOOOOONG time for the movies to arrive.

EX. of great prices there:

Take a look at this soon to be order of mine:

Escaflowne Collection (9 discs): reg. price $99....there $60
Witch Hunter Robin Coll. (6 discs + 8 pins): $150...there $90
Devil Lady Coll.(6 discs): $50....there $30
Legend of Crystania:movie and OVAS: $20 each.... there $12
Oh My Goddess OVAS (2 discs) : $30 each.... there $14 each
Ah My Goddess the movie $30....there $24

At regular price it would be: $419 plus $15 S&H.... here $254 S&H free or just $5 more for 5 days delivery.

Isn't this great or what?

All depends on who has the best price.

For multi disc sets on-line is the way to go, for new releases, brick and morter.

There's a thread similar to this on the General Discussion. ;)

I buy all of my DVDs from Best Buy (because of the Rewards Zone and Price MatcH), Wal-Mart, and EBAY through trusted sellers. 8)
