Let me first say, extremely interesting story! It's like your parents didn't want you to be a stereotypical girl, but they didn't want you to be a tomboy...? Truth be told, the newer princesses are generally considered better and less conventional than the older, Walt Era princesses. They are claimed to have more ambition and more control of their stories. I'm not going to get into why I think the older princesses are just as good, or at least competable.

So that may be another reason why your mom was okay with them, because they weren't 'as bad" as the older ones, if she thought they were bad at all. I can't believe she didn't let you watch your favorite more "boyish" films. At least now you can watch whatever you want! Do you have Robin Hood? Do you have both DVD releases? How far did Robin Hood go down in your list of favorites?

And you know, I think I spend too much time on the net! It seems that at Disney sites, it's more balanced between girls who like "boy" or animal films and girls who like princess films. But in "the real world", it's more the animal and neutral films that girls like. Aladdin's kind of neutral because it has a princess but also a boy as the main character. Beauty and the Beast has a princess and a prince getting equal attention and time. And Alice in Wonderland is like all the rage because of drug references and the link to literature and the Hot Topic merhandise. LOL. I guess it's popular with the cool kids because it's "trippy" and weird and not a romance. Romance is rejected by the "cool anime/goth kids".

P.S. I believe my mom loves the Jungle Book. It may be her favorite, not sure!

I like your name, too! Julian Carter sounds like some music star or something! Or an actor! Or a business! It has such a ring to it. At first I actually thought you had a different name and you took Julian Carter from someone famous! Or a video game character, or something.

I agree with you! I think my mom had something against the whole, waiting for Prince Charming thing and the naievity (is that even a word??) of certain princesses such as Snow White. The newer princesses seem to have more of that "girl power" kind of feel about them that the others didn't have. That's another thing my mom probably finds acceptable about them. (A little random, but I've thought for years that if my mom ever watched Mulan that it would be her new favorite Disney film for just that reason).

As a result of this, I wound up watching and owning a lot of the neutral films: Pinocchio, Fantasia, Bambi, Dumbo, Alice, 101 Dalmatians, Aristocats, etc. Those types of films are the one's I've become more attached to.

Well, let me clarify a little. My parents didn't forbid me from watching movies like Jungle Book or Robin Hood. If I felt like watching it and it was on TV or I was at a friend's house they would be totally ok with it. They were hesitant about shelling out the $20 for the VHS's on a film (or films) that they thought inappropriate.

Thankfully, my mom no longer cares what Disney movies I watch. (She also knows that at this point, there's no way she can stop me from buying and enjoying the Disney films I own/get. Though she's trying. At this point, she's no longer giving me spending money. So guess who'll be looking for a summer job? ) She also no longer cares about the live action films I watch. (She hands-down would prefer for me not to watch films with a lot of sexual scenes or really bad violence, but that's normal). My dad on the other hand, started allowing me to watch what ever kind of movies I wanted (within reason) since I was around 10-11. For example, my dad was actually encouraging me to watch Silence of the Lambs when I was in middle school. Let's just say my mom had a fit about that.

Anyway, yes I do own Robin Hood. RH was actually the 2nd/3rd DAC I bought on DVD. (I bought Aristocats and Robin Hood at the same time, at the same place). But I thought that the GC disk was sufficient enough and didn't buy the MWE. Robin Hood used to be really high on my list of DAC's when I was little (even back in 2005 when I started my DAC DVD collection). At one point it was likely in my top 10. Now that I've seen almost all of the DAC's, it's more in the area of 21-30. I don't hate the film, but it's not a die-hard favorite anymore either.

I totally agree about Alice! At my school, two years ago the Senior theme was Alice in Wonderland. There was an outrage by some of the seniors that year about the drug references and how it was inappropriate for public school. However they stuck with Alice. All the seniors got really into spirit week that year and let me tell ya: It was amazing and hilarious seeing so many seniors dressed up as the Mad Hatter and March Hare! (As well as a lot of Tweedle Dee and Dumbs, White Rabbits, and Alices!)

I believe my mom's favorite Disney Animated film was (and still is) 101 Dalmatians. She also might like Fantasia. But her favorite animated film of all time is Monsters Inc.

My moms favorite is Lady and the Tramp. But we love ALL of the animals ones simply because, well, We LOVE animals!

Funnily enough, most of my female friends ARE princess fans. My friend Brittany's favorite Disney movie is Beauty and the Beast, Krystal's is The Little Mermaid, Anna's is Cinderella, and Jessica's is Sleeping Beauty. Oh, and Cinderella is the only Disney movie that's unanimously liked in my family (and is my mother's favorite). I have only two female friends who aren't big princess fans. One of them likes all the films minus Snow White and Cinderella, but there a bunch of other Disney movies she'd rank above those. The other friend only thinks Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin are decent, and is either indifferent towards the rest (Cinderella, Little Mermaid) or hates them with a passion (Snow White and Sleeping Beauty).

Then there's the other end of the spectrum involving me: I'm a guy, and the princess movies are among my favorites (all of them minus Snow White are in my Disney top 10). I'm not a big fan of Disney's animal films. The only ones I can say I love are The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and The Lion King, and the latter teeters more towards "really like" than love. My mom and my friends are the same way. The human flicks for some reason just connect with us more.

Hey Escapay, I have a question for you:

Ok, so I looked over the Looney Tunes Golden Collection Vol. 2 set and everything seems to play ok. (Which is great considering that disk 2 had some bad scratching, and disk 4 had BAD scratching on the disk art, which was weird...) But you were right! EXCELLENT set! It's absolutely chocked full of bonus features and cartoons! What a treat! This is actaully kind of bad, because now I'm kind of determined to get the other 3 LT sets and I'm actually broke at the moment...

But here's my question: It states on the DVD fold-out case that on disk 4 there is the Vault Rarity "Sinkin' in the Bathtub," (or the first Looney Tune short ever created) yet I can't find it anywhere on the disk. Is this just my set or was it edited out before WB had time to change the advertisement?

I know your post was directed at Escapay, but I can answer it. It's a misprint. The cartoon actually appears on Disc 2 of the third volume.

Congratulations on getting your first set, by the way. I absolutely love these, and still need to pick up Vol. 4 myself.

One of my favorite things about Volume 2 is the inclusion of the classic "One Froggy Evening" (Disc Four), which I had grown up with on my aunt's Little Giants VHS (we'd constantly trade videos between our families, and eventually it upgraded to trading DVDs, lol).

Thanks (to both of you!) very much! But at least WB decided to put in in the next volume and not just abandon placing it on DVD permanently!

Anyway, I was also pleasantly suprised by just how many of the Looney Tune shorts there were on that set that I had seen before. One of them was Froggy Evening, which I really enjoyed! I had also seen What's Opera Doc? and various Roadrunner and Tweety shorts.

I can't wait to get the other 3 volumes! I'm also now thinking of getting the two Tom and Jerry sets. Any input on those sets that I should know about?

There's two things you should know about the Tom and Jerry sets. First, a few of the cartoons on each set are edited versions, in which the original dialogue of Mammy Two Shoes was rerecorded because the original was very stereotypical. It was an accident, according to Warner, and they offered a replacement program late last year for Vol. 1. As far as I know, no program is in place for Vol. 2 yet. The second thing you should be prepared for is the video quality. Most of the cartoons are not going to look as good as the Looney Tunes do on the Golden Collection sets. They certainly could have, but Warner did not put forth the effort.

That said, I still reccomend that you pick them up because it's likely the only release they'll get on DVD and the positives do outweigh the negatives if you're a fan. You get forty cartoons per set, most of which are uncut, and some of them have been restored. Because I'm fortunate to have all of the original, uncut cartoons on Laserdisc, I have passed on this for now. I may pick them up if I find them used and at a good price, because LD's can go bad at any time.
