that actually just reminded me of another incident i had. Once, in a used movie shop, i decided to my the VHS of pocahontas (a little over a year ago, since i hadn't seen it in a while, and the vhs was only $3), and so when i went up to the counter, the girl (who was about college age) asked me: " so are you buying this for your little sister or something?" I decided not to get into explaining it with her, so i just said yes. but that sort of shocked me there.
This could be a serious matter, you know - they probably aren't supposed to sell those to people above the age of 12.
TheSequelofDisney, what bothers me at the moment, is that this friday, i'm going to (hopefully, after a long, hard search) finally get Snow White (PE), and i'm probably going to have to pay my mom $7-$8 to let my buy it at Gamestop for $17. Oh well, i hope it will be worth it.

I didn't intend to stomp on anyone's feet - on the rare occasion I guess I have difficulties relating to the sort of problems others have to deal with, though.

That "squeaking" was in some foreign language. Did they possibly "decode" that sort of language in Atlantis?

hmmm...could it be The Lion King? OR maybe The Little Mermaid? you know, i'm quite sure that scuttle said that to Ariel at some point...

OR maybe it was Zazu talking to himself...the world may never know.
Is there a phobia about fear of people when you buy a disney movie? There should be. It should be called When-I-Buy-A-Disney-Movie-In-Front-Of-Other-People-That-I-Don't-Know-And-Would-Most-Probably-Think-That-I-Am-Five-Years-Old-phobia.
hey, i totally agree! we should create one!

great name by the way!
Hey, brotherbear, you have a good time buying Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. I have the DVD and it's awesome, yo!!!!!

Its so annoying when people think you have to stop liking disney by a certain age. thats just stupid. I love disney and I'm proud of it! I'm gonna be 20 and I still have a disney princess poster in my room. Everyone else can deal with it! lol.

I think some people here just need to learn that what other people think of you is not the be all and end all of everything.

Unfortunately, Disney is adding to the stereotype by making films and shows that have been "dumbed down" for children. Walt would never have stood for that. But it's so refreshing to see a guy that's not ashamed to appreciate Disney, even though people might tease him. Congrats to you. Walt would be proud!

I have to say that their reaction seems a bit off. While I know many many people consider Disney kiddish, they've always respected my love for it, and also consider it art. I've never come across such ignorant reactions before (well, once I did, but the guy was clearly in the minority).
Oh, and just for the record, I enjoy both Celine Dione and rock...

I pretty much agree with you there (I also think Disney's marketing of their titles doesn't help), and it's encouraged me to give everyone a hint. If anybody says "Disney sucks! You're a weirdo!" or something similar, just reply to them saying "Yeah, well at least Disney is better than you." I've said that before...

Wow...um, I never thoguht this thread would become so popular in 15 hours.
By the way, I totally agree wth you joplin4, Disney aren't really helping, when they release countless Winnie the Pooh titles intended for toddlers, really this time. How on earth would I be able to explain to any one that the original shorts had Academy Award winning animation, and that they were loved by children and adults alike?
PS: I tried to present the conversations as accurately as possible. The first one, between me, Neville and Michael was even longer from what I remember, but I've forgotten what we later discussed. All I remember is being totally furious in the end...
Thanks to everyone for the replies and...
I think TheSequelOfDisney's quote is from the Emperor's New Groove!
Isn't it?

That's the exact opposite of the way things were in my school. In 8th grade, the girl who was probably the most popular in the entire school, was carrying around the Masterpiece Clamshell VHS of The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (this of course being back in '97/98 when I was 8th grade) all day one day. No one made fun of her, and that's really one of the first grades people start acting like the people you're describing. When I was in high school, the people in my class were all Disney fans or at least accepted Disney. We were of the first real generation of kids raised on Disney VHS's, and I was the 2nd oldest kid in my graduating class (they did, I didn't - but I was still 2nd oldest!). Anyway, I think when you're in high school (at least my generation) you feel like you have to have this biting, witty, satirical outlook on life, and a cynical attitude about sentimentality. For the most part, we all know Disney movies are usually very sappy... Or at least that's what people are likely to think if they're not willing to try and watch them again. If you watch all the classics again, it's really just Bambi and Snow White that are unbearably sappy at times. They will never be able to understand it until you are able to appeal to them on that level of magic / childhood - as soon as you find out what they saw as magical when they were kids, and say that Disney is that way with you... they'll get it. Unless their childhood was extremely traumatizing! Which isn't a completely distinct possibility. Most likely though, they're just being young and stupid. Hopefully, one day they'll grow out of it. And by the by, I've met my share of teachers. They're not always as with-it as they should be.

Therefore I prefer to make a clear distinction in my mind between "Walt Disney" and "present-day Disney". That still doesn't help much with "those people", though.

i DEFINATELY agree with you...especially with the recent occurance of "Dumbo: the Big Top Ed." which is taking away GOOD bonus features (commentary, trailers, etc.) and adding things such as the First Circius feature...*sigh* I've heard that its the same for Cinderella, with the inclusion of kiddie features (feel free to contradict me...since i have yet to buy the DVD...)

*scuffles for the large box, and ferociously attacks the box, rips it into shreds, tears out the cookies, and gobbles them down so fast that you wouldn't even know that there were any cookies*
Yummy! Thanks!

Most of my friends know I'm a big Disney fan so I dont encounter it that often, but it always throws me for a loop when i do. I was pretty much known in high school for always wearing a mickey mouse watch and carrying those mickey "rush brushes" they used to sell at the parks before they discontinued them. (anybody even know what I'm talking about?)
However when the Cinderella DVD came out i got a lot of flack from everyone when they found out i bought it. One girl I work with thought I was crazy for running out to buy Cinderella on the day it came out. (This from a girl who immediatly buys any movie sight unseen if it has "dreamy Orlando Bloom" in it

) another girl decided to spread it around telling everyone i bought Cinderella like it was some juicy piece of gossip that i should be ashamed of or something.
I guess because I'm a guy they thought it seemed "girly" of me to like Cinderella or something. ( Cinderella was at one time my absolute favorite Disney movie because of the amazing fairy godmother transformation scene). Even my explanations of how i like great animation (and I do like lots of differant animation besides Disney) seemed to fall on deaf ears.
Like it or not there still is a perception in some peoples eyes that Disney is only for babies. It annoys me when I see people pointing to uncreative CRAP like the Day After Tommorrow as something that is BETTER than Disney because it has "Cool special effects" (yeah and a plot fit for a 5 year old).
I see it happen to my brother sometimes too because his favorite Disney charecter is Winnie the Pooh and people sometimes look at him like : "shouldn't you have outgrown that by now?"
I don't see it as a majority of people who think that way though. I mean most people actually like Disney movies. maybe not to the same degree as we here on the boards, but most wont make fun of you for liking Disney. In fact when I bought the DuckTales DVD at Best Buy, the girl who checked me out was surprised and said she hadn't seen that show in years and didnt even know it was out on DVD. I told her I used to watch it every day after school and she said yeah she did too and she thought almost everyone our age did. So yeah while she's probably not a huge Disney fan (How could she be if she didnt know immedietly when DuckTales was going to be on DVD

) even she liked Disney.
Well thats my dollars worth of rambling anyway....oh by the way...that girl who was spreading the news about me buying Cinderella as if I'd done something dirty actually asked me a few weeks later if she could borrow it cuz she hadn't seen it in a long time and wanted to see it again.

brotherbear: As far as the Cinderella DVD, I can say that a lot on that DVD is meant for adults and kids alike...as Walt would have wanted. But you are correct. Present-day Disney would be a disappointment to Walt. He would HATE it. And I can safely say that Walt would not be a Disney fan if they were putting out the things they are currently putting out.
The Disney Channel is a serious problem. If you are a 13 year old girl, you will LOVE it. Otherwise, you might be disappointed.
The trashy sequels also add to the myth that Disney is for kids. They've "dumbed down" the plot so much because they are targeting kids. Walt used to say, "If you aim for kids, you're dead." He preferred aiming for the kid in all of us, but making it mostly for kids over 30. That way, the older "kids" wouldn't have to stoop too low, but the younger kids could try to reach for the point and stimulate their minds.

Yeah, it's funny how that happens isn't it. I can't remember how many times I've let people watch my Lion King and BATB DVDs.
I've never had any serious problems from liking Disney. I'd rather like Disney and be different than fit into these little groups that are appearing in college this year.
My friend was watching TLK on my PSP a few weeks ago on my PSP in college, and a guy walked past from our year and he was in awe of it, now whenever we have the same free period, he always checks to see if I have another Disney movie on it.
