I will give you example of collectors, that money is not a option. Coin collectors for one. A coin that's worth a nickel someone might buy for $100.

It is alot of money but if you can be sure it is not a bootleg and it is brand new, (if I had the spare $$) I'd pay the $75 for the Snow White if I had to have it. The person who started this thread has spent at least that on 3 or 4 worthless bootlegs at this point. Obviously he/she wants the real thing or they'd be satisfied to have a bootleg and would not have posted this post in the first place. Its a good option.

Other's have suggested very affordable alternatives like GameStop. If you don't mind buying a used movie, I have seen several Disney titles in there like Monsters Inc and Incredibles. We happened into a GameStop one night and I saw a used copy of Peter Pan there for $12.99. The insert was missing and it was used and that's why I didn't buy it. If I wanted to watch a used movie I'd just go rent it at the local Blockbuster instead of buying it. But if you have to own your very own copy then used is a good alternative to paying say $75 for an unopened copy of Snow White or whatever.

I have decided not to chase after the OOP Platinums because I can't settle for a used copy and I can't afford to be collecting them at the prices people are charging for them new. So I'm just going to wait for them to come out on the HD format whenver that may be.

If you spend time browsing auctions though you can find some bargains. I was able to snag a like-new copy for less than $25 off ebay.

I hope your luck is much better than mine!

I've had about half-and-half luck buying from eBay. I bought Snow White, Tarzan (the original single disc), Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, and Pinocchio (also Bambi and Alice in Wonderland, but those are still in print).

Snow White was $20, authentic (used), Jungle Book was $24, authentic (used), Pinocchio was $12, authentic (and new! ).

101 Dalmatians, Tarzan, and Dumbo were all bootlegs. The first two I didn't realize until about 5 months later when it was too late to do anything about it, but by the time I bought Dumbo I knew what to look for and was able to get all my money back (including shipping).

For the in print stuff, Alice (ME) was $8.50 new/sealed and Bambi was $7.00 new/sealed, both authentic.

So I guess my point is that you can find legit copies out there, it's just somewhat of a crapshoot. Even researching things like feedback extensively sometimes isn't good enough.

Well my concern is, after reading what the original poster here said, was that it was really hard to tell if it was a bootleg and then they turned out to be bootlegs - that kind of worries me. I would probably buy one of these bootlegs and not know it.

Does anyone know how you can tell a bootleg from an authentic release of a Disney DVD? What should one look for to know? I think in her case, she was checking feedback, etc. Could be the sellers had no idea- especially if they were selling sealed copies which they could not inspect..... just curious if anyone has any ideas on how to check for fakes.
