I was finally reading Ashmans full original 1988 treatment for his Aladdin and wow. Of course i knew of some overall differences like the "making his mom proud" storyline or that jasmine was a spoiled brat, but it was definetly different than i though! I didn't expect the crush Aladdin had on Jasmine to be extremely reduced and almost non existent here or Jasmine being a fully comedic sidekick through her arrogance, which was quite funny (like that scene wherw Jafar makes her scrub the floor and shes like "dadee give him the kingdom already this is inhuman torture" and then the voiceover saying the Sultan knows when hes defeated lol). same with overall emotional stakes, like the genies were mostly just comic relief and they had no real relationship or conflict with Aladdin, where the wish for hranting the Genie felt more Luke an "ok why not" situation than an emotional act of friendship like in the final film. I love Ashman but i gotta say the final one feels so much more theatrical and emotional despite its sharp comedy. Also Aladdins friend group didnt really serve the plot besides freeing him from prison so it was good to just reduce them into Abu, its not like they had destinctive personalities either. But in his defense this was literally his first outline for Aladdin while working on Little Mermaid so i know it would be way better if he had more time focusing on that. Still interesting to see what could have been.

Do you have access to this original treatment by any chance? My best friend and I would love to see it!

I'll always be curious to know what Howard Ashman would have thought of the retooled version of Aladdin. The finished product is 10 star work for me, but it's so vastly different from his original vision. Like Jasmine alone does a complete 180. I'm wondering how he would have taken the deviation, or even if it might have caused some bad blood between him and Disney.

I've been working on piano arrangements of various instrumental scores from Alan Menken's soundtracks of the animation renaissance era. Recently I've completed these two from Aladdin (1992) and I wanted to take the opportunity to share them with fellow fans of the film!
I felt that the "Cave of Wonders" and "Happy End in Agrabah" are the greatest highlights from the soundtrack score, and I'm planning to include others in the future such as "The Battle" and "Ends of the Earth".
I really love this medium of hearing the score without dialogue or sound effects, in sync with the film visuals as it deepens my appreciation for the compositions, but also the deliberate timing of every nuance in the music.
Enjoy, and please let me know if you have any requests!

I'm listening to "Happy End in Agrabah" right now.
I agree with what you say about zeroing in on the music without the dialogue or sound effects. Distilling the scene down to just the melody and visuals really brings the chemistry of the scene to the top.
Do you do a lot of soundtracks outside of Disney? Passengers (2016) has one of my favorite scores of all time, though its central piece "Spacewalk" is already largely just piano anyways.
Otherwise, Gone with the Wind and Titanic are up there too.

Did Disney Really Steal Aladdin?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44chgavSaKA
Lindsay Ellis has posted a video specifically on the Aladdin/Thief and the Cobbler controversy, which I previously knew very little of.
Her interpretation doesn't really cast Disney as the bad guy in this specific case, and she surveys some of the internet's impulse to just always assume Disney is in the wrong. Most of the YouTube comments are some variation of "Why do people need to invent reasons to hate Disney when there are already a million perfectly valid reasons to hate them?"
It's clear she also read the Ashman treatment that started circulating (re-circulating?) a few months ago, and she has a lovely section in the middle all about Howard Ashman.
I've seen most of her videos, except some of her more niche offerings on Nebula and some of her earlier stuff, but this was probably among her best work.
