My experience watching The Prestige can be summed up quite simply: I now have a girly hard-on for Christopher Nolan.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe with Director & Kids Commentary.

Talk about dead space.

Pirates of the Carribean 2: Dead Man's Chest

Enjoyed it enough to watch it twice since I picked it up but it doesn't beat the first.

(Disney's) Beauty and the Beast - I don't know that the movie is any better than I originally thought, but this was definitely my best viewing of the movie.

Superman Returns - That is, until my disc started flatlining during the emotional climax for the movie. I'll replace the movie next week and will then finish it off. So far though, I can definitely confirm that this movie only gets better on repeat viewings (this being my third viewing, overall). 9/10

Watched Superman Returns 2 days ago. I don't understand why people bashed this. It's a great superhero film even though it's a bit on the long side. 8/10

Today, I watched Mickey's Christmas Carol in my Career Prep. class. Great stuff.

Casino Royal - it was pretty good; kind of too predictable but some parts left you guessing. I can't believe they destroyed the Aston Martin, it made me weep a little bit.

Mean Girls - I forgot how much I loved this movie. I can't stand Lindsay Lohan, but she doesn't bother me in this. Fun movie, never fails to make me laugh.

Watched The Phantom of the Opera yesterday with my friends. Watching Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest at the moment.

Watched the original The Amityville Horror with Margot Kidder and James Brolin. Now I know why I hate re-makes so much. This movie would stand on it own to day if it were released - instead they had to get a hunky beefcake Ryan Reynolds and the equally untalented Melissa George to star in a totally inane remake. If you want to see a really good horror movie, see the original "The Amityville Horror", you will thank me.

Memoirs of a Geisha last night - alright but not great

My favorite thing about that movie is the opening credits sequence. After that... it's an uphill / downhill thing. Mostly downhill, in terms of storytelling and filmmaking quality. The uphill moments are too few are far between. But if the film was trying to create intensity by trying to drive the viewer insane as well as the characters in the movie - good job.

This has always struck me as one of those movies that is too real for it's own good (i.e.'s - Faces of Death, Cannibal Holocaust). So instead of timeless atmosphere, we get too many real-life details. I always thought this was more effective as a family saga - family buys a house too expensive because it's a great deal, slowly realize their lives are falling apart because in addition to not being able to pay their bills / going further and further in debt, the house is trying to drive them crazy.

A movie like this should scare us, rather than involve us so much in their lives, that their being able to repay the brother's wedding caterer is as important as them actually escapting the evil house before someone goes on an ax-murderering rampage. Then, the family fall into too-typical roles. The wife becomes a nervous wreck, the father goes into violently unstable self-isolation, and the kids believe the ghosts are their friends, or disappear from the movie completely because they aren't important to the story. The only time one of the sons is ever used, is to be a victim when the house gets angry. That's kind of manipulative.

Babel

I'm not very good at writing reviews, but this movie is amazing. If you thought "Crash" was good in dealing with racial tensions, this movie makes that movie look like cookie cutter dribble. "Babel" is so much more realistic and complex and such a thought provoking film. A Must See!

I just watched The Matrix Reloaded. It was on TNT, so I dug out my DVD and avoided fullscreen hell (and trust me, this is a film that looks terrible in foolscreen). It's a movie that thinks it's intelligent, but it really just kind of combs together big words in a way to make them sound smart. But let's be honest, we don't watch movies like The Matrix to think - We watch them to see some ass kicking action, and in that department, it still delivers pretty well. Some of the effects are cheesy and video gamish, the dialogue is some of the worst not written by George Lucas, but the action really rocks. After three years, it's still an 8 out of 10.

I will be seeing the We Are Marshall sneak preview tonight and will likely stay for Unnacompanied Minors. I'll report on both in the near future.
