It's been what, about 24 hours since I bought a Disney movie?

But I will be getting this. Sword in the Stone will just have to wait a couple more weeks.

Glad to hear about both the PQ improvements (including more correct framing) and that the original title has returned. I'm guessing this is the first home video release to show it.
Too bad no Blu-ray was put out as I probably would have bought it.

Yeah....but I kinda see Goliaths point when things were wish it were blu comments come in every thread...
Maybe there are double agents on UD from Bluray forum! It's a conspiracy that should be investigated by

^True, but we can all agree it's a largely-adopted format.
As for this title, Disney's restoration efforts for this release, judging by the review, are hardly enough for them to put out a blu-ray. I'll buy it, though.

True, but we all know by now which select films Disney is giving the BD treatment to and which are most likely to see one in the near future. We also know which films are not likely to get one in the near future. To go on rants about films that we knew weren't going to get one anyway right now is a waste of everyone's time. Like with last year's releases of Oliver and Company and Pete's Dragon, their threads were full of the "no BD" rants but did any of us actually think Disney was going to randomly give those two a BD release? Same with The Great Mouse Detective and The Black Cauldron.

I'm guessing this is also the first home video release of
The Great Mouse Detective to show the 1985 Walt Disney Pictures logo before the film, and not the 1990 version of the logo that was used in the 1992 re-release.

I agree with that, I've always thought that, but there's no reason Disney shouldn't have put out BD releases with
Mary Poppins,
Lilo and Stitch, and
Alice in Wonderland.

Luke, in his review wrote:One final fact that Disney likes to share in discussions of computer-animation: Great Mouse Detective is actually the first of the studio's movies to implement computer-generated imagery. CGI is used on the gears inside Big Ben, the clock tower featuring climactically.
Nope,
The Black Cauldron as the first to use CGI...for Eilonwy's bauble, for the cauldron, for a boat...

Not including all of the previous special features definitely deserves a

If only there was a facepalm one - it would've been perfect. Its not that I put a whole lot of value on special features, but still - come on. Is it really that much to ask.
But anyways if this shows up in Europe --- somewhere, I'll probably pick it up since I don't have the earlier version. And this title - Mystery in the Mist - will just not grow on me. Its just so... so... stupid.

So should I get the new or old release? I read the review, but Luke didn't exactly clarify which one you would be better off with, as he normally does.

I think that's because it's pretty much a toss-up. I doubt anyone will really care about the sing-along and the animated shorts that were dropped, but the art gallery's a considerable loss. The audio track seems to be exactly the same, but the new release has better picture quality (
though apparently not improved to the point where you just "gotta have it"). This new release has the original title card too, which is good.
It all comes down to which matters more to you: improved presentation or a 47-image art gallery. I'm going for the new release for the best transfer, but I'm still incredibly annoyed the art gallery was dropped.

I'd say the new one for superior film presentation and cover art. The absence of the 47-still image gallery is annoying, but I still say get the new one.

I totally agree...
altough I must say that the art-gallery does not consist of mind-blowing images

WHY?!

It's Disney..at least modern day Disney for ya....that's why
If Disney started making sense....I think Spongebob might come fromt he sea and give Escapay a Krabby Patty Followed By Shrek eating an Onion Flavored Parfait with Toothless and Stitch

Not to mention a keyblade appears in one hand, a stick in another, An old beggar will come up to his front door, and an alien invasion happens down the street.
Dont even mention what's in the closet.

Sad to see the current features go, even if it's just a photo album. But I think I'll pick it up simply for the new transfer and cause Future Shop has it in for $10 (the flyer price of $14 - but the website always has the most up to date price for them). So, since I only paid under $15 for the current DVD, and soon $10 for the new one, then I would have paid only $25 for the movie on two DVD editions (which sounds about normal up here for a single DVD). Too bad there's no Blu-ray (sorry, had to bring it up, but a DVD is fine for me).

Yeah, I am picking this one up as well. I want the new transfer to. If it wasn't for that, I would have def skipped this re-release in a heart beat. =)
