Sox's introduction reminded me slightly of Baymax. I think this looks good...I enjoy space movies. ZURG!!!!!! Yes!!

I preferred the teaser trailer, but the film still looks promising to me. I like the fact that it looks like it won't be just two characters going on a trip, as it seemed at first, but a team of four. Though, I guess the Black girl will be more important than the other two. Speaking of her, I thought she was the only woman in the group, but judging by the voice cast, it seems the old member is a woman too. I have mixed feelings about this new version of Zurg, though. It looks more like a dumb henchman than a menacing villain to me. And why is his design so different from the original? Buzz looks a lot more like the toy in comparison. Also, they could've given him a bigger entrance in the trailer.

By the way, according to the subtitles of the trailer this character that appears next to Buzz at the beginning is called Diaz. I bet he's the one voiced by Efren Ramirez.

I just don't understand what differentiates it from the standard blockbuster MCU/Star Wars film. Very disappointing to see Pixar sink to that level after coming up with original fresh films like Luca and Turning Red.

I think this will be much smaller in scale. Star Wars is about rebellion against the Empire and large scale space opera, where planets are turned to dust.

Based on the trailer it looks like a tiny colony has been stranded on an alien planet, perhaps due to a crash landing. And of these colonists only a spaceship with four takes off into space. A concept used long before Star Wars and big budget Marvel movies.

What happens after that remains to be seen.

I get the sense films like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Aliens were the main inspiration for the movie's production design. Hence why Buzz's base looks the way it does. However, I expect the other planets will look more fantastical the further out Buzz goes.

I have a feeling Interstellar may have also been an inspiration. Buzz's face made me think of Matthew McConaughey to a degree.

I think that Zurg will turn out to be a henchman like you said and the real villain, and the one controlling it, will be someone else. Maybe Commander Burnside or James Brolin's character. I agree with you about the design. If you're keeping Buzz's look very close to the original, why not do the same for Zurg?

Maybe they felt Zurg looks too much like the villain in Micronauts?

Maybe you're right; it would explain why he looks like a henchman. But if the toys from Toy Story are supposed to be like merchandise based on this movie, shouldn't Zurg be the main villain here as well?

I suppose they can waive that away by saying the IP holders chose Zurg to be the villain for the product line because his design was more interesting and cartoon-friendly and would appeal more to kids than a human villain. It's clear the way this movie fits into the Toy Story universe was not well-thought-out. There are more issues such as none of the other space rangers or the robot cat having any merch or existing in the in-universe consumer products line and video game. It's better to not think about it too much.

That's my favorite too. I think it's a great cover. By the way, I don't know if I already mentioned this or not, but I love the film's logo. It's my favorite from Pixar in years.

Yeah, you're right. We better not expect too much consistency in that regard; otherwise, we'll be disappointed. Although, another explanation just occurred to me. If there's a twist villain in the film, maybe they could say they marketed Zurg as the main villain in the Toy Story world to avoid spoiling it to the public, similar to what Disney did with Hans from Frozen, for example. They never marketed him as a villain. Well, at least, when the film was released. I don't know if they do it now.

There's also something I wanted to comment on which is just speculation, but I guess might be a bit spoilery, so don't continue reading if you prefer not to know too much in advance (in case I'm right about it). The cover below, which I posted the other day, made me realize there are most likely two Black female characters with an important role in the movie and not just one as we thought. I rewatched the trailers and I noticed that the one who is mostly featured in the latest trailer is called Izzy in the captions, while the one who appears at the end of the teaser was called Alicia. That's why there was a bit of confusion about the names at first; because there are two of them. Despite looking very similar, they clearly have different voices and Alicia has a scar on one of her eyebrows, while Izzy doesn't. They share the same surname, though, so my bet is that they're mother and daughter.

I think what happens is that something goes wrong in the test flight Buzz embarks on at the beginning, which is going to take four minutes for him and 4 years for the rest, and he arrives many years later. In the meantime, Alicia has had a daughter (or granddaughter, who knows) who is now as old as she was before the test flight. I have a feeling Alicia might be dead by the time Buzz returns, but perhaps she's just quite old then and that's why she doesn't take part in future adventures. Izzy is one of the three members of the "group of ambitious recruits" mentioned in the press release who seem to join Buzz on a new mission. That's probably the main adventure of the film, so Izzy most likely has much more screen time than Alicia, which would explain why she's the one featured in all the covers.

According to the press release, Izzy would be voiced by Keke Palmer then, while Alicia most likely by Uzo Abuba, the other Black actress from the cast. I also think the other woman in the group might've been already around before Buzz made that flight, given that she's the oldest of them. There's a character who appears when Buzz is dragged by that plant who looks like it could be a younger version of her, so maybe it's that character; we'll see. I now believe that's the LGBT character the film was rumored to have, especially considering her voice actress, Dale Soules, is a lesbian.

Yeah, it's a nice logo. I especially like the spacecraft's trail forging the "i" in the title.

That's as good an explanation as any. It might also be a reference to The Empire Strikes Back with its famous twist that was kept a secret during the marketing and promotion of the film.

That's a great theory. I think you're right on the money. Izzy being Alicia's daughter seems more likely than her being her granddaughter.

Yeah, scale alone is going to be very different. Especially since marvel makes you feel left out if you haven't seen every single thing they put out. Star wars can be like that to a lesser extent, except for a new hope, when they weren't sure it would get sequels.

This will likely get sequels, but they have to make this movie in a way that can be enjoyed as a one off should that be its fate.

I’ve been following along on Your guys’ speculations towards Light year and In regards to your theory that Zurg May not actually be the main villain of the movie, which I completely disagree with, but I do have a theory about that: you see just over a month ago I checked out the Snyder cut [I am not a DC fan of course, but I do really like Man Of steel, As well as the dark Knight trilogy, Joker, and I plan on checking out the Batman eventually,the Lego Batman movie of course and of course How it should have ended [HISHE , and any case man of steel and the overall Snyder verse still has Nolan’s involvement to the point where I even consider Man of steel to be an official Nolan film because he produced and wrote it and again he was an executive producer on the Snyder cut and BVS so it still counts counts towards Being his movies :-)And I’m thinking could Zurg‘s story in Light year be like Steppenwolf’s? I mean they do look alike and have a very similar Personality and it would also explain a lot of his motivation and hatred towards buzz… Even though it is his son…

I'm a bit surprised the info about the books has been updated now since Disney is not releasing their films in Russia at the moment, but I guess the website had already received this material before the current situation. Anyway, it seems some of the theories are confirmed. There'll indeed be time travel in the movie and Izzy and Alicia are actually related. The parts about the story are in bold:

Me too; that's what I like most about it as well. Plus, the trail also works well with other letters like the "e" or the "a", and the spacecraft itself serves as the "hole" (I don't know if there's a specific word for this) of the letter "r". Edit: I've found the word I was looking for. That kind of enclosed space in a letter is called "counter".

Maybe you're right. Zurg is very inspired by Darth Vader, so referencing The Empire Strikes Back again here would make sense.

I agree. The book description says it's her granddaughter, but I think there might be a mistake there because it doesn't seem to make sense considering Buzz returns after only 20 years. By the way, I wonder if there's a reason they designed them so similar to each other. Maybe it's that they wanted Buzz to mistake Izzy for Alicia at first?

Maybe you're right, but I don't know, I doubt Zurg will be Buzz's father in this version. The reveal in Toy Story 2 was a fun little reference to Star Wars, but in a sci-fi film like this in which the characters are not toys and seems a bit more serious in tone, I think it would feel like they're borrowing too much from Darth Vader and Star Wars.

I wonder if this decision will affect the film's performance at the box office. I think because Disney will hide Izzy's sexuality in the trailers and TV spots, it will be successful initially, as most parents don't pay attention to Hollywood trades, but it will later get a backlash worse than Turning Red did.

The article says the female character who is in a relationship with another woman is voiced by Uzo Aduba and she's most likely playing Alicia Hawthorne, so I think the LGBT character is not Izzy but her. Alicia will probably be important to the story, but her role seems to be much smaller than Izzy's, so I don't think hiding her sexuality in the promotional campaign will be a problem. I agree about the backlash, though. I guess I was wrong about the woman with grey hair in Buzz's group of recruits being an LGBT character then. Well, unless she's the one in a relationship with Alicia.

But if Alicia is a lesbian and has a girlfriend, how could have she given birth to Izzy? Unless, Izzy is adopted which doesn't make sense given how similar the two look and how Buzz will probably mistake Izzy for Alicia when he returns.

Via artificial insemination, perhaps? Though, I doubt that'll be explained in the movie. Come to think of it, this movie's going to be quite controversial. Not only it'll have openly LGBT characters, but LGBT characters with kids, which will probably get even more backlash.
