I can't wait for this!

My boyfriend just called me and said (my birthday's on the 29th) "hey, hon, guess what i'm getting you for your birthday? hint: It's something Disney!"
I knew instantly.
August is officially awesome.

What a beautiful lullaby! I'll upload it on YouTube soon.
So Ariel's "I Remember" samples parts of Athena's song? Probably the "la la la"s, of course "under the bright blue endless sky", and then there's "waves try to measure the days that we treasure", I love this song, and I don't care what anyone else has to say, I'm going to love this movie, no matter what.
Thanks so much,
Old Fish Tale!

Thank you Siren for reposting Disney Dusters story, I thought it was very good and it certainly made more sense than this current plot

Ditto that.
Thanks for that. I honestly expected the thread to explode back at me.
But Disney has given us a great sequel so far, Cinderella III. As for our biases, it's true I have one, but when trying not to let it get in the way and comparing CIII with AB, I legitimately see CIII as being better than AB in many ways.
While it's certainly possible [and likely] that Cinderella III could turn out to be the better film, I just don't even understand the point in comparing. I mean, I
try not to judge any film as bad or good based on the good or bad in another film. I know some people have been claiming that AB will be the "best DTV," and that's probably why you compared the two in the first place, but I still think judgment should be reserved until you've seen the finished product. I remember commercials making
Treasure Planet look horrible, but it turned out to be one of my favorites.
You had that problem with mine, too. I'm curious why, you love Ursula. Also, I think it fits to have old characters return with old villains, and it's not a stretch to think the same evil that hurt you in the past continues to, it's more epic and feels all cool in a movie.
You're right--I love Ursula. I don't think I would've turned out a Disney fan without her. I just don't consider her, or many of the other villains, pure evil. You could certainly read the original that way--with Ursula being evil incarnate--but Ursula does have some depth. She isn't evil for the sake of being evil (like the bland Maleficent). She's bitter and arrogant, not a murderess. I honestly don't think she did anything serious to be banished beyond becoming proud and overreaching the power she once had (think Yzma). I'd rather see the prequel good without her, than wrong with her.
Besides, I think Marina looks to be a halfway decent [minor] villainess. She suits the needs of this film--a powerful villainess like Ursula would bring too much. Which is where I disagree with Jim Hill's review, as a film doesn't need a domineering villain to cause problems and lead to a "happy ending." The original already has that. Can't this film just focus on the relationship between the family?
For now, I think I'll save the rest of my thoughts after I have the movie to go by (it
is only 11 days away). And college'll be taking up my time once again anyway.
Also,
Disney Duster, I apologize for the end of my first post. Re-reading that part, it comes across as if I were trying to goad you into an argument, but that wasn't my intention.

Okey-doke. This was one of the main reasons I wanted to come back to UD. To talk about this movie which I'm excited about.
As a fan, I can admit I'm a little disappointed with the story. Why no Ursula? And, I admit that it is a very "Sound of Music" plot, but I can watch a somewhat unoriginal movie like TLM3 will likely be, but enjoy it because of the heart.
As a fan, I can say that I think this film
may be TLM's "Enchanted". What I mean is, a lot of tribute will be paid to the first films and series. Number one, if you watch some of the clips you will notice some characters resemble characters from the series. Number two, think about everyone who thought Marina was Ursula. Even though she's not, there's a lot of resemblances, which makes me think Marina was homage to Ursula.
I thought from the very beginning to this very moment that the animation looked good. On-model, fluid, and I fail to see the chopiness everyone is talking about during the Catfish Club scene. Maybe I haven't seen that particular clip... but who knows?
I've also heard that Marina is supposed to be very funny,
actually funny and Yzma is one of my favorite villians, so I'm bound to enjoy Marina. Not to mention I love the sound of Sally Field's voice.
Then to add on to what Disney's Divinity said about comparing the films, I said this as soon as the first clip came out at the beginning of the year, "Let's not compare it to Cinderella III: A Twist in Time because we'll be disappointed". TLM3 is not 100% original (BUT... to be fair, it's not like Cindy3 invented traveling back in time, however it was different for a Disney Princess), the animation is not 100% perfect, and Julie Andrews is not in it.
But it does have it good sides. More music, which I thought was beautiful, not par with the original, of course, but NO sequel has had better music than the original. Official backstory on Ariel and her life before the original (that is if you're like me and consider the sequels canon). And beautiful animation, of course, not everyone thinks that, but I do.
And when it comes down to the whole TLM3/Cindy3 debate, would you compare the original The Little Mermaid and Cinderella? Two different, but lovely films. And even though TLM3 hasn' t come out, I hope and think that TLM3 and Cindy3 will also be two different, but lovely films... whileTLM2andCindy2willbetwosimilarnastydisgustingyuckpiecesofcrap.

Wow . . . okay, so I'll take back my comment about Athena sounding like an older Ariel . . . XD
That was a sweet yet beautiful clip! Thanks for making me more ready to see what the rest of this film will bring! And Athena is a good singer . . . no wonder Ariel and her sisters have such great singing voices - they got it from Mom! (Now Triton on the other hand . . . *sigh* I think he shouldn't quit his day-job.)
And to join with some of the other thoughts, I think I'll probably like Marina as a character - she is a villain, although she sounds to be more of a weaker one than many more beloved ones (such as . . . Ursula, her predecessor - not in movie time, mind you), but she does have many wicked qualities that make her have a purpose in the film . . . eventually (I guess, I haven't seen it so I'll just leave a question mark on that for now - still don't want to be spoiled too much yet).
But I betcha's she's a bit better than that Yodeling Cowboy, I swear. XD
(That comment cracked me up.)

Yeah... I was going to do that too, but the excitement overcame me. I really want to see all of Marina's song. It sounds very interesting, mainly because we get a cameo of Scuttle, but among other things, I can't wait!

I've never nodded so much to someone's post before. You wanna be my best friend?

I agree with everything you said, completely. I didn't realize it before, but you're right- Ursula would've been much too powerful considering the only thing that's stopping Ariel is the music ban; Marina fits the part, just as a tattler.
Still, I'm really upset that (according to Poody) there wasn't even a mention of Ursula in this film- as some others have said, why bother making a prequel if we still don't even know why Ursula was banished? What did she do to get herself kicked out?

I felt like I kinda jumped in and jumped out.
To the person who feels that there was no hard work put into TLM3, you're completely wrong. The opening sequence alone gave me chills because it felt like they used similar animation to the original, sort of how Bambi 2 used the same style as the original.
Marina was also a pretty good villain, albeit a little too much like Ursula, by that I mean the heavy Broadway influence. She was still pretty interesting though and the feud between her and Sebastian was very amusing.
I felt the film had a lot of adult themes to it. Music being a major aspect of Ariel's life, yet being banned from the kingdom, reminded me of how America went through the Prohibition Era and people had to sneak around. Very interesting.
Anyway, again, cool flick.

I said earlier in the thread my thoughts on Ursula. She is a control freak. And power hungry. But not the murderous type. She is willing to make bargains. And there is no telling how many of her bargains went well for the person(s) who sought her help. We see a lot of them went badly, weren't able to pay her. So they broke the deal and she turned them into those little polyp things with eyes. Of course part of the reason she has so many is because she schemes. Like Ariel and Eric would have kissed, if not for the eels. But she was not the murdering type in the movie at all, UNTIL, Ariel caused the death of her "precious little poopsies"...in a scene that reminded me heavily of Aunt Sarah in Lady and the Tramp. Not till her beloved pets died did she suddenly crack. If they lived, she never would have grow skyscraper tall and attempted to kill Ariel. She didn't even want to kill Eric or Triton. Just Ariel for causing Flotsam and Jetsam to be killed. She is just a devoted pet owner who saw her pets get killed and snapped. She's just misunderstood.

Well,
Jim Hill put in his two cents regarding the movie, and he wasn't all that impressed. Granted, he did say that it was a polished and fun prequel, but the lack of a strong villain hurt it, which is what a lot of people are saying here.

Not really on topic....but new species of dolphins was finally filmed, a Snub Fin Dolphin, who looks a lot like Benjamin. Benjamin looks more like those dolphins than a manatee...other than his tail

Regarding Ursula, I feel that saying she is less evil/a threat because she doesn't kill is a bit of an over-simplification. I mean if she had won all her victims would have been stuck as polyps in her garden until they died-and that's assuming they could still die.
The thing is she's more of a power-hungry villain with a goal than just a lover of destruction (though she enjoys that to some extent too). I think she WOULD and could kill if she felt she had to, to achieve her objective, but it's not something she relishes. Does that make any sense?
Back to Ariel's Beginning, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic. From what I've seen so far I love Athena and I hope we get a good sense of her character.
