Well, I am surprised. David was definitely hinting at doing a 2010 series. What's the point of it having Zygons (as rumoured) now if Tennant has gone? They were supposedly only going to be included on Tennant's request (as they are his favourite monsters).

But I'm really, really, really excited by this news. Now the 2010 series will be almost as exciting as the revival in 2005. New Doctor, new companion, new showrunner... everything's new! It's a huge shot in the arm for the series which could easily start to become stale (but for the record, I don't think series four did). We effectively have a whole new revival to look forward to with almost everything being rebuilt from the ground up..

As for The Moff, from the days of Press Gang to Jekyll, has he ever had anything less than spot on casting? Press Gang introduced us to Julia Sawalha, Coupling's casting was spot on, be they old or new faces, and while I wouldn't want him as the Eleventh Doctor, James Nesbitt was absolutely perfect in the lead role[s?] in Jekyll (Plus Jekyll introduced me to the wonderful Fenella Woolgar who blew me away in that and as Agatha Christie in Doctor Who.

I have every confidence that Moffet will cast a blinder of a Doctor. I'm really loving the idea of Paterson Joseph as the Doctor (even though I've always been against a coloured Doctor in the past fearing it would be more of a publicity stunt than good casting) because I feel he could be sensational in the role (just watch him on Mitchell and Webb, Peep Show or in Jekyll to see the scope of his roles and ability). He'll be fantastic as a Doctor if he kept his Peep Show Johnson voice!

I am really excited. I've never been so hyped up about anything. Not even the 2005 revival, because deep down, I was convinced it would fail and only last a year.

And if current rumours are true, imagine that 2009 Christmas special (or per current rumours Christmas/New Year two-parter). The last Tennant Episode, the return of Donna and Wilf, the return of the Master - perhaps out for revenge. Who better to "kill" Doctor No. Ten than The Master?

Just imagine, the Tenth Doctor sacrifices his life to save Donna. Perhaps even an still ignorant Donna. While Wilf looks on silently before helping the new Doctor to his feet. Oh, I'm so in love with that idea, its just perfect. Even though I wanted Donna to regain her memories, the bittersweetness of the Doctor giving his life for a Donna who he is nothing but a stranger is just... just wonderful. She was the most important woman in the whole of creation, and never knew how special she was, even when a strange alien gives up his life to save her.

Regardless, being as The Tenth Doctor's death is now timed to happen around Christmas I'm sure it will be both epic, thrilling and ultimately positive and uplifting - just like the series itself. I don't expect to be let down, no matter what happens, be it The Master, Donna with or without her memories, or even something totally off the radar like Daleks, Raston Warrior Robots, Yeti or the Kandyman!

Perhaps he'll do a guest spot in a Zygon-centered multi-Doctor story for Series 5? I certainly wouldn't mind having him return so soon after his departure. And multi-Doctor stories are fun, even if half the time they don't make sense.

David Tennant has suggested that Billie Piper could end up as his Doctor Who replacement.

When asked by BBC Breakfast if Piper, who played the Doctor's assistant Rose Tyler on the cult show, could land the coveted role, he replied: "Why not?"

Referring to the birth of Piper's son Winston, Tennant added: "I think she's busy breast feeding at the moment but I'm sure she'll bounce back before long."

The 37-year-old noted that the part of the Doctor is open to a diverse range of actors.

"It's one of those parts that any actor could bring something valid to, because it can be anything and it's a sort of blank canvas every time," he said.

"The fact is that the difference is a virtue with each Doctor. It's not like you're casting Tarzan where you've got to have somebody who looks good in a loin cloth - it can be anything."

Thank god Tennant doesn't really have a say in casting. I don't think the Moff would want to keep retreading past actors/characters like that. Of course, if he were to introduce Sally and Larry as the next companions, I wouldn't mind. Or maybe just Sally. Larry can manage the Sparrow & Nightingale's while she's away.

Well to be fair, it was a loaded question. David was asked about Billie taking on the role, and he could hardly say "No, she'd be crap" could he? Or even "I think the production team should look for someone new." He actually waffled on for a while about anyone could play the role, not a "ZOMG! Billie would be so great!" type answer.

It's odd, but there was more interest in the next Doctor after The Stolen Earth cliff-hanger than there is now! It's all been somewhat muted here. Still, all the who fans are concentrating on The Sarah Jane Adventures I suppose...

...talking of which, I loved "The Secrets of the Stars" story simply for its fan service - primarily making a common fan theory now canon; that being the universe before the Big Bang had a different set of physics, and thus explaining the various ultra-powerful entities we sometimes encounter in the programme (The Toymaker, The Great Intelligence, Fenric etc) as being from the Universe before ours and outside our physical laws. But beyond that we had lots of other fan service too!

Only a few more episodes of Sarah Jane left… but then it will be Christmas and The Next Doctor and then the New Year and Torchwood vs. the Four-Five-Six, and then Easter and The Doctor, Winston Churchill and … Sea-Devils?

That's one thing I love about DW and its spin-offs... it keeps you going all year round. No other show does that and it is fantastic.
About Billie being the next Doc, it's indeed David just answering the question. He is not in any way suggesting she should be the new Doctor.

Also, I'd love to see Sally being made a Companion. Even though I want new characters to be introduced (we've had enough people coming back now, thank you very much), you just know she'd be great and given a good character arc.

There's been rumblings about Paterson Joseph for awhile now, he's been on the shortlist ever since Tennant announced his departure. Several sites are all making announcements that they're *confident* he is the Eleventh Doctor based on their sources and other stuff, but there is still no official word yet. If it turns out to be a very well-done red herring, that would be quite interesting..

Still, I think Joseph would be good in the role. I haven't really seen much of his work (beyond his "Doctor Who" appearances as Rodrick) but netty has raved positively about him before.

In a radio interview today, David Morrissey says "I have a sonic screwdriver, I have a TARDIS. I am the Doctor." (And we've seen the Sonic on the CiN preview). And apparently, looking at this picture...

The BBC has released a small press release detailing the special.

It's Christmas Eve in 1851 and Cybermen stalk the snow of Victorian London.When the Doctor arrives and starts to investigate a spate of mysterious deaths, he's surprised to meet another Doctor, and soon the two must combine forces to defeat the ruthless Miss Hartigan. But are two Doctors enough to stop the rise of the CyberKing?

David Tennant stars as The Doctor, David Morrissey as The Doctor and Dervla Kirwan as Miss Hartigan. This episode also features Velile Tshabalala as Rosita.

And from the Radio Times article:

At the time of giving the Christmas special its title, The Next Doctor, Davies knew the news of Tennant’s departure would have become public ... "Hopefully, that creates a bit more intrigue," says Davies, "and hints at interesting developments in the show’s future. Let’s just say that regeneration is a complicated process, and never as simple as it seems."

So could DM be the 11th Doctor? Perhaps an 11th Doctor from an alternative future. What would of happened if the Doctor really regenerated in Journey's End?...

THE filming of David Tennant's last episodes as Doctor Who is under threat because to the star's debilitating back injury.

Tennant, 37, is struggling to recuperate from major surgery on his back after he suffered a prolapsed disc last month.

The injury has already come as a major blow to thousands of his fans who are now unlikely to see him in the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of Hamlet at London's Novello Theatre.

There are now fears that the star will still be out of action when the shooting of four special episodes begins in Cardiff next month, threatening to delay the project.

They are to be his last episodes before he quits the BBC's popular show at the end of next year.

Producers are frantically drawing up contingency plans to adapt around Tennant's prolonged recovery period, which according to spinal experts could take to "up to three months".

Being as one special was for Easter-ish (and considering the time required after filming for The Mill to do the effects) this is I feel quite probable. Will be get a hastily written Doctor lite episode? Or a screening after Easter?

Ooh, I hope the Tenner gets better. Not just so he can record new Who, but because back pain can be a bitch. I threw out my back last April and for a week I was on painkillers. Not a very good experience (though the painkillers weren't so bad). I can't imagine three months to recover from back surgery!

Meh, I'm not sure I'm happy about this. Though I'm dying to know who the next Doctor (hehe, pun not intended) is going to be, I wish they'd keep the mystery going a bit longer... Though knowing the BBC, it would've been outed by someone else then.

Matt Smith had that 'Doctor-ness', says BBC Wales' head of drama

Matt Smith has been named as the actor who will take over from David Tennant in Doctor Who - making him the youngest actor to take on the role.

At 26, Smith is three years younger than Peter Davison when he signed up to play the fifth Doctor in 1981.

Smith will first appear on TV screens as the 11th Doctor in 2010.

He was cast over Christmas and will begin filming for the fifth series of Doctor Who in the summer. Tennant is filming four specials in 2009.

Smith was named as Tennant's replacement in Saturday's edition of Doctor Who Confidential on BBC One.

He said: "I've got this wonderful journey in front of me where I've got this six months to build this Time Lord - and that's such an exciting prospect."

Piers Wenger, head of drama at BBC Wales, said that as soon as he had seen Smith's audition he "knew he was the one".

"It was abundantly clear that he had that 'Doctor-ness' about him," he said. "You are either the Doctor or you are not."

Wenger said a broad range of people had been auditioned, but they had not set out to cast the youngest Doctor.

Smith's TV debut was in the 2006 adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke, which starred former Doctor Who companion Billie Piper as Sally Lockhart.

He has also acted opposite Piper in the follow-up, The Shadow in the North, and in ITV2's Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

In 2007, he had a leading role in BBC Two's political drama Party Animals, in which he played a parliamentary researcher.

Smith's stage work has included stints with theatre companies such as the Royal Court and National Theatre. His West End debut was in Swimming With Sharks opposite Christian Slater.

He was born in Northampton in 1982 and studied drama and creative writing at the University of East Anglia.

Creative team

Tennant said in October that he would stand down from the show after filming four special episodes in 2009.

Tennant is recovering from back surgery ahead of filming in 2009. The star is due to begin shooting the first special this month, just weeks after surgery on his back forced him to pull out of a London run of Hamlet.

The last of these special episodes is expected to run in early 2010.

With a new creative team in place for the 2010 series led by executive producers Steven Moffat and Piers Wenger, the casting of the Doctor was the first job to be completed before scripts could be finalised.

Doctor Who began in 1963, and seven actors played the Doctor before the show was dropped in 1989.

After a TV movie in 1996 - starring Paul McGann - the TV series returned in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston in the lead role. Tennant took over the same year.

I guess Paterson Joseph was a really good red herring after all, like I predicted. Still...just who exactly is Matt Smith? I saw his resume, and aside from Secret Diary of a Call Girl...don't recognize much (then again, I'm in the States...).
