74th Golden Globe Awards (2016-17):
Film Nominations Preview and Predictions

<< Previous (Best Actor Predictions)

Martin Scorsese directs Andrew Garfield on the set of "Silence."

Best Director

Damien Chazelle, La La Land
Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
Martin Scorsese, Silence
Denzel Washington, Fences

Next in line: Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge; Denis Villeneuve, Arrival; Clint Eastwood, Sully; Jeff Nichols, Loving; Tom Ford, Nocturnal Animals

Generally, here you just have to list the directors of the most serious Best Picture contenders, with the more established and esteemed directors rising to the top.

The critically acclaimed drama "Moonlight" seems likely to garner a number of Golden Globe nominations.

Best Screenplay
Manchester by the Sea
La La Land
Moonlight
Fences
Nocturnal Animals

Next in line: Silence, Loving, Lion, Arrival, Hidden Figures

The Globes only have one screenplay category, which makes this a tough field to crack. You assume the three presumed frontrunners (La La Land, Manchester, and Moonlight) make the cut, but those last two grabs are very much up for grabs.

Disney's "Zootopia" is the best animated film of 2016, but will awards voters remember that nine months after its theatrical release.

Best Animated Feature
Zootopia
Moana

Finding Dory
Kubo and the Two Strings
Sing

Next in line: Trolls, The Secret Life of Pets, Sausage Party

The Globes' Animated Feature category plays things much safer than the Academy's equivalent category, which has consistently recognized under-the-radar fare from outside of North America.

Best Foreign Language Film
Elle (France)
Toni Erdmann (Germany)
Neruda (Chile)
Julieta (Spain)
The Salesman (Iran)

Next in line: Fire at Sea (Italy), The Handmaiden (South Korea)

I've only seen the first two, but the others seem to have buzz around them.

Best Original Song
"Audition (The Fools Who Dream)", La La Land
"Can't Stop the Feeling", Trolls
"How Far I'll Go", Moana
"City of Stars", La La Land
"Drive It Like You Stole It", Sing Street

Next in line: "Faith", Sing; "Try Everything", Zootopia

Will La La Land's multiple songs cannibalize each other? Maybe, but as the rare actual musical, it still seems primed to earn multiple nominations and a win in this category.

Best Original Score
Arrival
Moonlight
La La Land
Jackie
Lion

Next in line: Silence, The BFG

This is always one of the toughest Globes categories to predict, since the Globes have not established their music tastes (i.e. a love of all things John Williams) as thoroughly and clearly as the Oscars.
