72nd Golden Globe Awards (2014-15):
Film Nominations Preview and Predictions

<< Previous (Best Actor Predictions)

Angelina Jolie directs the cast of "Unbroken" in a prisoner of war scene.

Best Director
Angelina Jolie, Unbroken
David Fincher, Gone Girl
Christopher Nolan, Interstellar
Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, Birdman
Richard Linklater, Boyhood

Next in line: Bennett Miller, Foxcatcher; Clint Eastwood, American Sniper

These nominees usually line up perfectly with the Best Picture - Drama nominees, but in reality it is the five most highly regarded nominees in either Best Picture category (which explains how comedy filmmakers David O. Russell and Alexander Payne snuck in last year).
I could see Linklater making the cut even if Boyhood misses out on a Best Picture nomination. I'm pretty confident about the others, based on Jolie's celebrity and the Globes' nomination of Nolan for Inception.

Best Screenplay
Gone Girl
Foxcatcher
Boyhood
Unbroken
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Unlike the Oscars, the Globes' do not distinguish between original and adapted screenplays, placing all in competition here. It does seem unlikely that the Globes would snub Boyhood from Picture, yet recognize it for Screenplay, but there is precedent: that's what the Academy has done for Richard Linklater's last two Before movies. There's also the fact that if I'm completely wrong about Boyhood (which most would anticipate), I at least get this prediction right.

Next in line: Interstellar, The Imitation Game, Birdman

Unikitty welcomes Batman, Wyldstyle, Emmet, and Vitruvius to the colorful and cheerful Cloud Cuckoo Land in "The Lego Movie."

Best Animated Feature
The Lego Movie
Big Hero 6
How to Train Your Dragon 2
The Boxtrolls
The Book of Life

The Academy usually likes to throw in one obscure foreign animated film that has barely played in North America, but the Globes generally do not, making these nominees the easiest to predict. The winner is still somewhat up for grabs; The Lego Movie is the frontrunner, but not quite a foregone conclusion.

Best Foreign Language Film
Two Days, One Night
Ida
Force Majeure
Wild Tales
Mommy

Next in line: Leviathan, Winter Sleep

Like Best Documentary (an award the Globes both introduced and retired in the 1970s), Foreign Language Film is notoriously tough to predict in any awards show. I can't pretend I've seen most of these, so I'm mostly relying on others' opinions.

Dan Mulligan (Mark Ruffalo) and Gretta James (Keira Knightley) use a headphone splitter so they can both listen to the same song on the subway in "Begin Again."

Best Original Song
"Lost Stars", Begin Again
"Yellow Flicker Beat", The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1"
"Everything Is Awesome", The Lego Movie
"Mercy Is", Noah
"Glory", Selma

Next in line: "Big Eyes", Big Eyes

The first two Hunger Games became Golden Globe nominees purely because of this category. I don't see the streak ending this time, with another pop act (Lorde) involved. "I'll Get You What You Want" from Muppets Most Wanted has a shot at the Oscars, but I'd be shocked for it turn up here, after the Globes completely snubbed 2011's superb The Muppets altogether. Hollywood Foreign Press must hate the Muppets.

Madame D (Tilda Swinton) lays her head on M. Gustave's (Ralph Fiennes) shoulder as they take a colorful elevator ride down The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Best Original Score
Birdman
Interstellar
Gone Girl
The Imitation Game
The Grand Budapest Hotel

Another category that is tough to predict, with almost no score awards issued yet this season.
