Childhood Movies Revisited - Expectations Lacking

Was curious if anyone else as experienced this.. About a month or so ago I went on one of my (usual) Best Buy trips.. Just to walk the DVD section and see if anything caught my eye, after browsing the Disney section.. I came across Labyrinth and had to get it. I saw this as a kid in the theater and loved it.. However after bringing it home and watching it.. It left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.. Honestly.. I hated it. I put into consideration the age of the movie, the understanding that special effects and so forth have come quite a way since 1986, But the magic wasn't there.
I had also purchased another movie as a kid I loved, Flight of the Navigator, and I can't bring myself to watch it in fear I'm going to hate it as much as I did with Labyrinth.

Well, I had never seen Flight of the Navigator before last year and I loved it. One of the funnest Disney movies ever! (*waits for Ichabod to say that it's not a Disney movie*) Offhand, I can't think of any movies that I liked as a kid but not anymore. More often, with the movies I like as a kid I can appreciate them on exciting new levels now. Or it may just be nostalgia convincing me they're good.
Some movies hold up, and some are strictly a product of their times, but I seem to be able to enjoy both usually.

Oh, I still love Labyrinth. And Dark Crystal. Kinda weird in a way seeing Jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth and she was so unknown back then, she disappeared for over 10 years it seemed and then suddenly, she is a big movie star
Anyways, I bought Flight of the Navigator and sat down a few months ago to watch it with my daughter, excited to see it again. It never lost its magic with me. The jokes were still funny and IMO, the effects were nearly up to par with current effects. It STILL looks good. The spaceship and those stairs turning to liquid, like in T2. It's amazing how well it looks and it was made in the 80s. It is a bit dated in a few areas....Twisted Sister is mentioned for instance

I don't think you will be disappointed with "Flight of the Navigator". It is a great movie. I loved it when I was younger and I still love it to this day.
It's pretty neat if you go to MGM Studios. They have the little silver ship on one of the backstage tours.

ok, maybe HATE was too strong a word.. I just didn't like it after viewing. And I saw FOTN in the movies and loved it as a kid... Was one of my all time favorites growing up. Being it's gotten good comments, I'll bring myself to watch it.
Luke, understandble some movies can withstand the test of time and still dazzle .. Mary Poppins I think is a great example.. I saw it too as a kid and loved it then, and hadn't watched it until it came out on DVD and still loved it.
I think with Labyrinth.. it was David Bowie's acting and songs they had that did me in.. I couldn't take it.. I watched it all tho.. And I think I'll never watch it again.

I don't think she is a big movie star, she also never disappeared, she had done movies just nothing big, She was in Rocketeer in 91, Higher Learning in 95, Mullholland Falls in 96. I still dont think that she is a big star. Her top Movies in the last few years have been The Hulk and A beautiful Mind.
As for the Origional Question When I was a kid I loved The Original Doctor Doolittle, I picked it up reciently and was so let down

She won an Oscar for A Beautiful Mind. She also got rave reviews for House of Sand and Fog, and she has another movie coming out this summer, Dark Water. No Julia Roberts kind of big, but Julia's done a LOT more movies the Jennifer and Jen got an Oscar anyways. So IMO, compared to what she did before, she's big.
It's all a matter of opinion

I dont feel that Oscars are worth much anymore, The movies that win the Awards are normally not the best ones, LOTR is an exception, If you go by Box office and Video/ DVD sales what would win and Shouldnt the people decide what the best movie of the year is, not a bunch of FIlm Executives and Critics

Did you see A Beautiful Mind? It wasn't an overhyped movie. It did very well, but was not Titanic or Forrest Gump success. It deserved every oscar.

Being distributed by Diseny in North America, a Disney movie does not make!
I love FotN, but it ain't Disney!
Now you've had your final warning!
There is only one movie i loved as a child that has lost it's shine for me and that is the epic David Bowie/ Jim Henson masterpiece "Labyrinth".
Just like Lightyear stated even though i loved this as a child, now probably could say i hate it!
It just seems so "wha?" now and is just a bit cruddy.

Flight of the Navigator was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I taped it off Disney Channel years ago and my whole family loved it.
Of course, it happened to be on my only tape that snapped at the end of the reel. I had to painstakingly take it apart and reattach it to the reel as best I could with scotch tape. It worked again, but I watched it sparingly knowing that it could easily break apart again.
So imagine my excitement when I saw the DVD in the store! The only thing that caught me off guard was the swearing. . . I didn't realize that Disney Channel had editied anything out!
Anyway, I took it to a friend's house and her sister about freaked out. . . she hadn't seen it in years! Their dad watched it with us and thought it was great, too.
Lightyear, give this film another viewing. . . yeah, some of it is a little dated, but that's part of the fun! Besides, it holds up really well, and more importantly, the magic is still there.

...
There are objective standards with which to measure the artistic merits of a film. I think it's safe to say that a movie like 'Hotel Rwanda' is "better" than Shrek 2, regardless of what numbers they put up in the box office.
Besides, there's always the Peoples' Choice Awards, and we all know what a trainwreck that is.

I haven't seen Labyrinth in four or five years, so I cannot comment on that, or Flight of the Navigator of which I have not seen. However, I can understand the scenario that Lightyear is in; I remember loving The Sword in the Stone as a kid, but I found it somewhat stupid in places on a recent viewing as an adult.

I was JUST about to tell you about that. I've known for at least a week.
I think it's a crazy move for MGM. They're going out of business, so their big plan for a home video comeback: Garbage Pail Kids The Movie...? I feel for you guys at the Lions' Den. Don't let Sony put out Without You I'm Nothing, MGM, they'll screw everything up!!!
I hope more parents protest the release of this movie, it's just TOO gross. It should be banned somehow.

I really don't consider Flight of the Navigator to be a 'dated' movie. The movie starts in the 70's and ends up in the 80's, so the references are part of the story. As the story is supossed to take place in that time period, I would consider it more of a period piece/scifi film.
I don't understand why you would hate Labrynth, I think that its still a fun and very imaginative film. What were you expecting from the film that you didn't get watching now as an older person?

I love Flight of the Navigator. I used to watch it all of the time on the Disney Channel when I was younger, and I saw it again for the first time in years back in 10th grade (my geometry teacher was a huge fan of the film), and I was impressed by how well it held up. I understood a lot of things that went over my head as a child, and I think I like it even more now than I did then. I don't really have issues with revisiting childhood films. Perhaps it's because I haven't matured much, but I still love the films I grew up with, such as the 1985 Alice in Wonderland mini-series (which NEEDS a DVD release), or the 1965 version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella. I think the only films I loved as a kid that I'm not too big on now are The Carebears Movie and Pippi Longstocking. I saw these films again recently, and they're rather hokey, but they brought back so many memories that I managed to somewhat enjoy them in a nostalgic way, even if I couldn't really enjoy them literally.

Well, maybe I shouldn't have used the word "dated." Anyway, you're saying exactly what I meant to.
