Which upcoming films do you think are Oscar caliber? Which films already released, if any, are Oscar worthy?

I think the only films which are Oscar possibilities are CINDERELLA MAN for Film, Actor, Supporting Actor, Directing, Screenplay; BATMAN BEGINS for Art Direction, Adapted Screenplay, Costume Design, Editing, Sound Mixing, Sound Editing; STAR WARS III for Special Effects, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, Art Direction, Costume Design, and Makeup.

I love Oscar prognostication! I'm usually right the majority of the time. From experience, Star Wars III will not even touch the Art Direction, Costume Design, or Makeup categories. Its predecessors didn't, and there's a lot of prestige dramas that will fill up those five slots pretty quick. I can almost guarantee that Batman Begins will probably win Visual Effects and maybe another award. They usually go for the critically acclaimed blockbuster of the year. I'm hoping that Cinderella Man flounders. I'm through with Russel Crowe. As far as I'm concerned, all his movies are the same, with him playing the quintessetial man's man. I haven't seen it, so I won't judge it, but I'm just hoping he doesn't get his fourth nod.

I'm not a Russell Crowe fan, and I never liked ANY of his movies - but this one surprised me. LOVED it.

He won't get a nod, don't worry. There's too much competition in the Best Actor category.

What films to open at the end of the year do you foresee getting nods?

I'll second Ian McDiarmid, unless of course he's actually evil, then it wasn't acting. But I don't think he could truly be evil, so yeah, go Ian!

Ian would only be eligible for Supporting Actor.

I'd nominate Paul Giamonti from CINDERELLA MAN for Supporting Actor.

Ironically, the crop of Oscar contendors this year are ones that I'm highly anticipating and will probably LOVE, so I don't want to spoilt there chances with predictions. Besides, I only have seen screen shots of them, so I'll wait until all trailers are out.

I think Revenge of the Sith should get a nomination for Best Picture. I mean if that extremely overrated The Return of the King can win Best Picture just because it was the last movie of the trilogy, why can't it be the same for Star Wars! Well knowing how the Oscars work that's not going to happen! Especially when they give the awards to the wrong film!

I think Cinderella Man is going to get alot of nominations and awards! The other four films I think are definatly going to come out in December. It doesn't matter what they are as long as they come out in December. That's how the Oscars usually work.

I haven't seen anything this year that would strike me as a solid Best Picture nominee. I hope that just means that I haven't seen enough movies.

Then again, the only BP nominee last year that I thought was sincerely EXCELLENT was 'Sideways.' 'Million Dollar Baby' was very good, and I enjoyed 'The Aviator' and 'Finding Neverland,' but 'Ray' was incredibly underwhelming.

Personally, I thought 'Hotel Rwanda' trumped all but 'Sideways.'

Wow, that statement was just so wrong on so many levels. Like I've said in another thread, you are a die hard Star Wars fan, of course you are going to love the movie, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily one of merit. There is not a single quality about the film that even dignifies a nomination for Best Picture. I've only seen fifteen films this year, and I still wouldn't give it a nod.

Star Wars will probably get an award or two, being the last movie of the trilogies. Best Picture? Not likely...

I don't think Star Wars Episode III will do well when it comes Academy Awards time. I hoping that Paul Giamatti wins the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Cinderella Man.

Also, does the members here want to do an Academy Awards-like ceremony for the films that have been released so far this year from January 1 to June 30? I think this would be a great idea since most of the movies that are released from January to June don't get recognition when it comes to Oscar season. The members here could vote on stuff like Best Picture, Best Actor, ect for the movie sthat have been released so far this year. Does anyone want to do this?

I think like all years, we've got to wait till winter for real buzz.

For visual effects its a battle between Narnia, King Kong, Harry Potter 4, Fantastic Four, Star Wars Episode III, Hitchhiker's Guide, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, War of the Worlds and Batman to get the final nominations. If there's only three nominated like last year it will be hard.

Sin City may get a cinematography nod for the whole black and white/colour highlight thing.

Nothing so far this year has made me think Best Picture Potential.

I'm not sure how it works with films that only get international distro. 2 years after release, but Old Boy definitely deserves to win something for the music score / sound mix.

That films is so overrated!

Return of the King won because it was actually a good movie that was more than glitz and glammor. It had powerful allegorical themes and the industry is fond of Peter Jackson (a respectable director) and his vision. The Star Wars franchise hasn't seen a Best Picture nomination since the original, which shows they were wearing of its novelty by Round 2. Unfortunately, your "overrated" remark is in the minority of the film community.

Two things wrong here:

1. Most everyone agrees that RotS was a good movie
2. It had extremely powerful themes

Meh Peter Jackson's "vision" was inspired by George Lucas. He ever said it on the Star Wars DVD. In fact the special effects were done by Industrial Light and Magic which was created by George Lucas.

What I don't like it how so many films should've won best picture but they don't win! How did Annie Hall win best picture? Star Wars changed the movie buissness and is looked back 28 years later. The only thing I hear about Annie Hall 28 years later was, "yeah it was enjoyable". In fact many films should've got that award, but were robbed. Ever heard of "High Noon", "Raiders of The Lost Ark", "Field Of Dreams"? There are many more. So I didn't like how they just gave everything to this movie!

Well it probably deserved it more then Titanic!

I'll third Ian McDormind for an acting nod.

I also think that regardless of whatever else Episode III recieves, George Lucas should be the recipient of a Special Acchievement Award for the completion of the hexology and all of the innovations in filmmaking that have resulted from its creation. Star Wars always has and continues to push the boundaries of cinema and I think it would be nice to recognize everything it has done now that it is at its end.

As of right now, I'd say Episode III and Dear Frankie should be nomed for Best Picture, though I know that probably will not happen..

Howl's Moving Castle is a lock for Animated Feature; the only real competition I'm expecting it to have would be - possibly - The Corpse Bride. All of the other things released this year just seem run-of-the-mill with nothing particurarly special about them; they might be good, and Chicken Little for example does look somewhat entertaining, but not exactly Oscar-calibar. So, I'm thinking Howl will definately earn Miyazaki his second Oscar.
