FOX discontinuing several titles soon, including animateds

From DVDFile:
These Fox titles are all about to go the way of the dodo: Ice Age: Special Edition, The Fly/The Fly 2 (double feature), Ferngully: The Last Rainforest, Oklahoma! and State Fair are gone on June 30th; The Bruce Lee Master Collection goes bye-bye on July 31st; Anastasia, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Hustler, and The Verdict are out on September 2nd; and January 31, 2006 brings the demise of 28 Days Later, The Beach, Carousel, The King and I, South Pacific, and Miracle on 34th Street. If you want any of these, now is the time.
This is odd; Fox doesn't normally do this. I'm wondering if they're doing this to make a stink about it like Disney, or because they're bringing SEs of them in the future.
My Anastasia disc, for example, is an old non-anamorphic version that has been discontinued before and quietly replaced with an anamorphic one (same bonus content, just an improved transfer), and I have put off buying it again, figuring that I'll get to it eventually. Since I don't have a WS 16x9 TV, anamorphic hasn't been too much of an issue, but I'd still like to get it in anamorphic just on the obscure chance that I ever get a WS TV or get the chance to see it on one. So it would seem that if I want to buy it for the new transfer, the time is now, UNLESS they are cooking up some sort of SE of it in the future. Which is a distinct possibility; the extras on the current disc are GOOD, but it could easily be made great with more. And the movie's 10th anniversary is in 2007, which is not TOO far off.
And I want FernGully, too.
Another thing is the Rogers & Hamerstien musicals, with the exception of Sound of Music, were all originally released as non-anamorphic barebones releases. So there is lots of room for improvement there. But do I want to risk there NOT being a better version soon and missing them?
Advice, anyone? What are you all going to do?

Interesting. The only DVD I would want from that list is Ice Age and I already have it.

First of all, regarding Oklahoma, The King and I, Carousel, and South Pacific; all these titles are non-anamorphic. Fox has been hanging on to these letterbox transfers way to long. I have not bought any of them because I'm waiting for anamorphic remasters. When a studio discontinues a title it means one of two things, either sales have dwindled off and it's no longer profitable to keep it in print, or there are plans for new special editions in the future. My guess is theory #2
As for the animated Anastasia, Jake I think you are mistaken about Anastasia having been quietly reissued in anamorphic. I believe the only thing Fox did was repackage the original DVD. Nowhere on the new packaging does it say "anamorphic widescreen" or "16x9" Maybe someone who has the repackaged "Family Feature" banner Anastasia can confirm that it's the same non-anamorphic DVD.

Oh shoot, I still need to upgrade my Ferngully and Anastasia VHS's. Hopefully the special editions are somewhere around the corner.

I Liked The Anastasia with the White Keep-Case. But Then They Re-Released It As The Black Keep-Case.
I Hope They Have A Special Edition.

that fffoxy anouncement sounds just like Disney's
Gold-disc retirements doesnt it? *scratches head.
There's somemething
fishy going on
what could it be? what could it be? a little
bell is ringing in my head and i dunno what it is
it's funny cus like at least HALF of those titles (the classic ones) were what i told Aaron a few months ago the Blu-ray people should release as part of an initial wave to kill hd-dud
(Oklahoma! was the first 70mm 6-channel film, and it runs at 30fps which is better than regular 24fps, South Pacific was the 3rd 70mm film, Carousel and The King and I were the ONLY two films shot in Cinemascope55 (A large format 55mm version of Cinemascope), etc, etc, those would show off the system greatly..)
mmm.. CGI Direct to Digital Fox... mmmm
what's the
connection????

Maybe I'll have to pick up a DVD version of Anastasia, and Ferngully. If the King and I is the animated version, I might pick that up too.

Unfortuantley, the movie isn't a top priority and I don't have spair money to spend on it... I'm hoping for a new SE in the near future!

Yeah hopefully they plan on releasing new editions of these films. And that they aren't going away permanently.
I might have to get FernGully and Anastatsia.

Well crap, now I have to get Anastasia... I've yet to get it!
As for the others, some of the musicals grab my attention, but not enough to spend the $$ now or maybe ever.
Does that mean they might release them in SE?
I have Ice Age luckily.
I went to their site and couldn't find this info anywhere.
Just ordered Anastasia.
I did find out they are re-releasing Anastaasia in a 2 pack Anastasia/Fern Gully will be in 1 pack.

Anyone have any idea what the future plans for the Hustler and Butch Cassidy might be. Both are on my want list but if the treatment is going to be really improved then I am willing to hold off.

They Are All Probably Being Re-Released as "Special Editions" or "Anniversary Editions".

Well, it makes a lovely boxset! And the musicals are very, very entertaining. What do I think? I think you should buy them as well!

Who knows how long they'll be put on DVD in an "improved" version!
Advice, anyone? What are you all going to do?
We wait for the sale and then BUY! BUY BUY BUY! (well, not all of it since I already have some of them. Wal-mart has PROMO SALES, if anyone's interested. But it's not any of those DVDs mentioned...)

This sounds like great news for musical fans, because you know these movies will eventually get special edition attention sometime soon. I'm REALLY excited about 28 Days Later being discontinued because I don't own that DVD yet but my roomie does, so I can just borrow it (thankfully it's widescreen!). But I really want to own it in an expanded special edition. So hopefully 20th Century Fox puts it out in the same 2-disc splendor that Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Predator, Predator 2, and soon David Cronenberg's The Fly will be (just 4 more months!!!).
