I think it is awesome that Alice, Lilo, and Pocahontas will all get the 2-disc Special Edition treatment next year. I remember a while back here on this forum we were all worried that Disney was going to discontinue the 2-disc collector's sets. Glad that rumor turned out false!

Well, since we're getting Sleeping Beauty in a couple weeks, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the other foreign special edition releases come to the U.S...like "Pinocchio" and "Peter Pan".

Also, I hope to see that rumored "Hunchback Of Notre Dame" special edition come out someday. Remember when the specs were listed on the Disney site a year ago? If they're doing "Pocahontas", then you know they gotta do "Hunchback".

Let's hope all these special editions sell well.

At the end of the day the animated classics are disneys biggest money makers and since they've released nearly all of them once on DVD they need to release some other versions to make money.

I think these "Special Editions" will become an annual thing until all those great collectors editions we saw on Laserdisc in the mid to late 90's are released on DVD.

I'm definately buying all four Special editions when their released.

I'm sure we're going to see special editions for "Hunchback" and "The Three Caballeros" somewhere in the future - there's no reason for them not doing so, after all, all the suplements are completed (they only need to be carried over from the laserdiscs), and Disney wouldn't have to spend a lot of money on these DVDs!

I can't wait for the 4 (5, if we count "Aladdin") Specials Editions coming next year... and maybe there will be more! At least I hope so!!

Gotta believe there will be more than five in '04. Hell, we'll have four of 'em in January. Wouldn't be surprised to see one or two suprises slip in the production schedule in Q3 or Q4 of '04.

I think the original "Freaky Friday" might be issued as a Special Edition as well next year. Remember the spiel about hours of extra features that was on the website and taken down? That and the remake, I suspect, will be coming in January.

Like I've said in another thread, I have a feeling the supposed "new platinum titles" such as Pinocchio, Fantasia, Peter Pan, and Sleeping Beauty, will all be 2-disc Special Editions as opposed to platinums because the release of SB points to this, and too many things lately have been pointing to the 10 normal platinums with no mention of the newly added ones. So in the end, it'll be like this:

I have to say that I think that the DVD's we have for...
Make Mine Music, Fun And Fancy Free, Melody Time, The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr Toad, The Aristocats, Robin Hood, The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh, The Fox And The Hound, The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver And Company are the only versions we'll ever see for them.

I think we've got a slim chance of seeing Special Edition releases for The Rescuers movies and The south American films as well though.

The Horse in Home on the Range, looks like the horse from the Aristocats...

Offtopic I know, but Danny's Avatar just made me think of it.

It reminds me of 70s, but I bet it's based on both 70s and Sleeping Beauty.

Eventually, we will likely get double-disc special editions of all of the animated classics. However, if they're only doing 3-5 a year it'll take a while, definitly into HD-DVD. If it would be possible for Disney to do this much, I would really love to get 1 or 2 double disc special editions per month, simmilar to how they released the Gold Collection. Of course, the Platinum would still have to maintain an event-like feel, but since they have the 10 best-selling titles in their library under that banner (I've given up hope on the four extra Platinums what with Gordon Ho's response to DVDFile and the lack of retitling for Sleeping Beauty) that shouldn't be a problem.

I for one am very very interested to see how they treat Brother Bear next spring. They seem to be admitting with the release of the January special editions that their lbirary titles will all at some point or another get special editions, so it would make a lot of sense just to do one edition from the get-go, especially since they'll likely try to squeeze both OAR and P&S versions on one disc (since Brother Bear is 2.35:1), but part of me says it will probably be affected by the new rule that trimmed Lilo & Stitch the first time: decently packed single disc with some nice extras, but not nearly as generous as a double-disc special edition. My hope, though, is that it is a big hit for Disney and (or even if it's not) we see just one release with both 2.35 and 1.33 transfers and lots of extras (something akin to Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, and Sleeping Beauty) with a big marketing campign behind it to help it move lots of copies. The WDFA Flordia employees deserve to see this one done right, after what happened the first time Lilo & Stitch was in the release pipeline. They also deserve the chance to go do a special edition of Mulan. We'll see....

Oh I'm still around...in fact, I check this website out every day to see what's new! When I read about the special editions coming out next year I had to see what people were saying on the boards! And being a big animation fan, I have to put my two cents in about the special editions!

I have to disagree with you Jake. Disney feels (whether true or not) that there just isn't much point releasing nice SE DVD's for the package films and the films from Aristocats to Oliver. They think the public don't like them that much and it would be a waste of their money to do better versions than we have now.

I could be wrong for some but I doubt we'll ever see better versions of some.

i think disney tries to outdo itself each time. why wouldn't they just rerelease the same discs over and over? because people wouldn't buy them.

i feel maybe they just started out with the bare minimum on some of those discs because adding just a little more content they can call it a new edition name.


the editions we have now can't be all they are going to release to us forever.....

But of course, the French Pinocchio available now on that list is only a single disc with limited supplements.

And the French Peter Pan is 2 discs, but not really Platinum quality, fluff or no fluff. (Thankfully little fluff)

So it looks like these are a list French titles, which will not be Platinums as such - but I've no doubt that like Sleeping Beauty, and possibly Peter Pan, Disney US will use the base content of these French releases as the groundworks of their Platinum releases.

Either way, our release schedule is definitely not going to match theirs as Disney doesn't intend on any March platinum till 2005...The list said Cinderella for 2006...do you think we'll get it in 2005 before them?

I think I should just make every possible Platinum timeline and have the images change randomly every time you visit the FAQs. It'd probably be more accurate with Disney's latest plans...somewhere.
