Has anybody here seen "The Rescuers"? It is a great movie, one of my favorites from childhood. However, Disney has seemingly forgotten it. Can I ask why? Does anybody know?

What do you mean Disney has seemingly forgotten it?

It's on DVD now... I think it was just less popular so it isn't as hyped as say, Cinderella or Snow White. It's on the Disney Movie Club website and I think I even saw it in Target the other day.

I remember liking it but I remember the Rescuers Down Under far better.. not sure why, but I remember it well!!

Those two are on my list of next to purchase

My thoughts

Rescuers - well developed character and story but horrible animation. Probably the Disney movie with the worst animation.

Resucers Down Under - really nicely animated especially the scene with the giant bird but huge story problems. The rescuers showing up at the scene of the crime with ten minutes to go in the movie really did not work in the least. The cutting back and forth between the two story lines was really annoying.

Well, I mean there's nothing at the parks to do with this movie. Disney has it on DVD, but it's just a normal DVD. I'm not saying it should get a ton of honors or anything, just something a little more respectful...get what I'm saying?

I really do not like the sequel and the animation is iffy in the first one. However, the story, voices and villian are superb.

I like it I thought it was all right. But I like Rescures Down Under better.

I agree with MinnieMe. I don't think Disney has forgotten it either. I have it, but it is not one that I watch that often.

Well that is probably because it is not as popular as other Disney movies like MinnieMe said. If you think about, it makes since. Most of the merchandise and attractions are base on the more popular characters.

I think it just wasn't all around a hyped movie. Like Oliver & Company, the Aristocats, the Great Mouse Detective and the Fox and the Hound. They don't have stuff at the parks on them. Why? I dunno. I guess because they weren't as popular as some of the others. If they are less popular little kids of nowadays are less likely to have heard of them I guess. I'm guessing that's partly why Mr. Toad's Wild Ride got the boot (besides that it was kind of cheesy IMO). Kids were like "who the heck is this toad guy?"


I personally would like to see a better Alice & Wonderland ride- a dark ride in Fantasyland or something. You could do a lot more with that movie than has been done!

Seems to be most of the output from the 70s and 80s not featured, when the studio was still adapting after Walt's death and many of the animated features were good but not the classics we'd seen before (or since during the 90s).

The Rescuers was one of my favourites when I was a kid, and although it isn't in my Top 10 Disney Classics list anymore, I like it. I'm surprised that Disney lets it get so underrated, to tell the truth. Read a book on Disney animation, and they'll say that the best film made after Walt's death but before The Little Mermaid and the renaissance in animation was this one (or possibly The Great Mouse Detective) which had a strong story and good animation, unlike some of the films of its day like The Fox and the Hound and The Aristocats (both of which I'll agree are fairly lacklustre). I think its underrated-ness could be due to the popularity of modern titles like The Lion King and renued interest in the old classics, pushing the popularity of a film like this. Oh well, hopefully a special edition will arrive soon.

I enjoy The Rescuers, it isn't my favorite DIsney movie but I enjoy it. I like Rescuers Down Under a lot better though.

I love the Fox and the Hound! I think it's the saddest movie I have ever watched in my life. I would have been bawling my eyes out last time I watched it, during "Goodbye May Seem Forever," if my brother and sister weren't in the room. (My brother was watching the movie with me. My sister said it was too sad for her too handle and absolutely could not watch it. But she was sitting at the computer and turned around when "Goodbye" was playing, making a comment about how heartbreaking that song was.)

I actually liked Rescuers Down Under better than the original

I love the Rescuers! I like Medusa lol and Penny! And the good thing about the DVD it's presented in it's original 1.66:1 Anamorphic WS! the picture it's really clean for a film that age!

I also liked The Rescuers Down Under better than The Rescuers.

I have yet to see this movie but I really liked the sequel. Whats it about? I have heard good things about this. Actually I just ordered this movie from the Disney Movie Club and they ended up sending me The Rescuers Down Under, which I already had! Gosh!

I enjoy both films for different reasons.

In my opinion, there worth owning for sure!

I haven't seen either movie yet. I've been wanting to watch them but the trailers don't catch my interest so I always end up renting other movies instead.

Well, I guess I'm gonna be the odd man out and say that I don't think The Rescuers Down Under was better. I saw it, and I liked it, but the original still has such a place in my heart that it's impossible for me to say the sequel is better. My little sister and I absolutely LOVED The Rescuers and saw it several times during the summer of 1977, but unfortunately we had just lost our father in May of that year, and it was one of the few comforts we had at the time. The songs especially were what soothed us, and even today when I see the DVD, I note that the songs, as well as some of the animation, are what I find most remarkable. That, plus the performances of the voice actors, which were superb. I think it's a shame that the film has been pretty much ignored by the current Disney administration, but considering that it's a product of the Ron Miller era (their predecessor), I'm not really surprised at the BS politics and lack of marketing that have surrounded Disney's 1970s/early 80s films.
