The Anime/Manga Discussion & Recommendation Thread

For me:
1. The animation as a form of art. It is amazing the quality Japanese people put on this. If it is already hard enough to draw these characters as they are much less in animation and TV series.
2. The stories. There are so many to choose from. An even if it is the same story it can be told in so many different ways you're never going to get bored.
3. That for the most part these stories end. In contrast to American cartoons that are just episodic and once people get tired these series are taken off the air, anime series are meant to end. And that makes them great. You know that once you start with a series you're not going to be left hanging.

Like American cartoons, or toons from any other country, it is not so much I like anime as a whole (because I don't like US animation as a whole either), but there are certain aspects of it that I like in some products more than others.
Generally, anime is cool because it doesn't assume that the audience are children, and when it does, it doesn't assume that they are idiots. As anime/manga is such a big part of the Japanese culture, they tell interesting and mature stories that hold up for both adult and kiddie audiences.
I also like the stylistic design in many of the films and shows I have seen, but again, this differs from show to show.

You know what, I used to like anime a whole lot, but I'm starting to get sick of it. It's getting to the point where I almost don't like it. I don't want to start any arguments so I'm not going to say why, but that is how I feel about it right now.

I like the animation style of anime, and the storytelling....I like alot of American animated series as well, but it kinda bothers me that most are episodic(the only ones I can think of right now that aren't are Disney's Gargoyles and Futurama;though there are probably others)...
There are some anime with incomplete endings,though....Fruits Basket,Ranma 1/2,and Inuyasha, for example(probably because the manga for each series was still going when they decided to stop making the anime.....In fact, the Fruits Basket and Inuyasha manga are still being produced) ...

I don't like anime, either. I don't see it as anything sophisticated nor artistic. Like someone else said, I prefer cartoons like Looney Tunes, Disney, etc.

I haven't really enjoyed the very, very little anime that I've seen. I haven't seen nearly enough to fairly assess it, though.

I'm not going to argue with people who don't like/hate anime (even tough the post is for people who like anime

). Everyone has his/her own tastes. But I'm wondering, have you tried different/enough anime as to reach your conclusion?

Depends on the anime. I do not like a lot of anime. But, what I do like, I am loyal to. I mainly like the shoujo anmie (Magical Girls) , but I also like two others that are not shoujo.
1.Sailor Moon
2.Cardcaptors
3.Mermaid Melody
4.Inuyasha
5.Pokemon
I am going to try the new anime called "Ultra Maniac" As for the Spirited Away, and Princess Monokoe (not sure how to spell it) I do not consider those animes. I do not like the story or the art on any of them. To me, it is just really boring (no offense to anyone.)

LOL, allthough not all anime is all that great there are some that are excellent like Cowboy Bebop. I have gotten SICK of most American cartoons. We got into anime for about a year+ now, anime is new and fresh to us and once we got into the story telling on some of them we found them very entertaining. Studio Ghibli films IMO are FAR BETTER than most Disney films, imo i think Lion King,
Home on the Range, Lilo & Stitch and some others are crapy movies (maybe the worst) compared to some anime films. Watching some american animated films is as good/entertaining as being in a coma as are some anime shows imo.
Before I thought all anime was crap because I thought it was all like pokeymon, but now after getting into it a bit we find Studio ghibli films are FAR BETTER than MOST traditional Dinsey films imo. Disneys got NOTHING fresh for ideas, most there stuff is just rehashed and regurgitated storys over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over...
Fact is most anime is becoming more and more popular and I really like fact that some of this stuff is catered to adults and NOT little kids. About the only thing/pet peve with some anime is, I would like to see better/more fluid character movement but if the story is good then I don't think to much about it.
I am just glad that there is so many diffrent types of animation out there because we are all diffrent and what some people think are great cartoons/films... others think the same is crap. The bottom line is... it's just entertainment. The world would be a boring place if we all liked the same stuff.

There's a lot of dreck anime out there, really. I would say that I'm a fan of animation in general. I can even enjoy a childish series like Cardcaptor Sakura because... I like entertainment, and CCS (or anything by CLAMP, really) is entertaining. d:
Cowboy Bebop was an eeeexcellent anime... emotional, addicting, had good music (by the wonderful Yoko Kanno), good characters, solid plot, great ending, etc. All-around fantastic. Elfen Lied is also a good one, though the ending was a bit cheese. The latest anime I watched was Mai-HiME and I thought it was really good.
I don't watch that much anime anymore (I may follow one or two series if I hear really good things about them) but I do read a shiteload of manga and... I guess it's just a part of my life. It isn't a hobby even, just something that I normally do.
P.S. NANA equals love.

That's like me...I'm much more of a manga reader than an anime viewer...I started out with anime in 2000(back when manga was much harder to find in bookstores),but now that manga's become readily available,I usually would rather read the manga version of a series than watch the anime....Most of the recent series I've watched have either been on TV(Yuu Yuu Hakusho,Inuyasha,Wolf's Rain,Mew Mew Power),or based on a favorite manga creator's work(Chobits,Azumanga Daioh,Rumiko Takahashi Anthology)....I also love Studio Ghibli films(The Cat Returns in my current fave)...

I really like anime.. I tend to lean towards the darker stuff.. I'm not all about the pink and smiley stuff.. I much prefer Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Ninja Scroll (Box set coming out! on May 10.. definate pickup).
Fist of the north star is one of my favorites.. live action STUNK tho.

There are many members here that like anime, especially Studio Ghibli. My favorite is Castle in the Sky, followed by Princess Mononoke, and Nausicaa of the Valley of wind.
Besides Ghibli movies I also like other anime. I use to love Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, and Digimon. I also liked Outlaw Star and Tenchi Muyo, but I havn't been impressed with many new anime t.v. shows.
