Some trivia about the franchise.
Q: The character names are some of my favorites in animated movies! Do any of them have fun/interesting origins or reasons they were chosen for the movie?
Brian Nissen: Derek was just one of many names we tried. We actually like Eric but were then reminded that this was the name of the prince in Little Mermaid. I can’t remember the other names that were in the running. Initially, we thought Derek was too contemporary, but we went with it for one of the early drafts and it just stuck. The same thing happened later with Alise. It felt too modern, but as time went on it seemed right and it stuck. In regards to Jean-Bob, in early drafts of promotional materials, his name was Shipley but we weren’t completely satisfied with that. I was looking for a play on French male names like Jean-Claude and Jean-Pierre. I knew I wanted the second half to feel out of place — something that contradicted the Frenchness of Jean, like Jean-Ned or Jean-Larry. Jean-Bob seemed to have the right sound and level of ridiculousness. As mentioned in the movie, Speed’s real name is Lorenzo Trudgealong. We really like it but we felt like it would be better to have a nickname that cut against the turtle stereotype. Speed felt right, mostly because it sounds like a name that was sarcastically bestowed by Jean-Bob, along with Mr. Molasses and a host of others. Uberta and Bromley both came from name books. They just felt right. Uberta especially seemed to match her. It sounds rigid and royal. Lord Rogers was a tip of the hat to many a Hollywood butler or valet named Rogers. Originally, Rothbart’s sidekick was just called The Hag, but in sequels, she became known as Bridget which I liked because it seemed like such a cute, unexpected name, given that it was the name of one of the Von Trapp children.

Q: Were Rothbart and Zelda romantically involved before he betrayed her?
Brian Nissen: No. Rothbart is a classic narcissist. He sees everyone around him as a tool to get what he wants. But when he realized that he could not recover the Forbidden Arts without Zelda's help, he did pretend to be romantically inclined toward her. The “relationship” came to a sudden end when Zelda supplied the missing piece that brought the Forbidden Arts back to life. She tried to use the Forbidden Arts to cast a love spell but not before Rothbart created a hard casing around his heart. That Derek’s arrow was able to puncture it in his battle with the Great Animal has been a matter of conjecture among Swan Princess historians. Was Derek that powerful of an archer? Or did the hard casing disappear in Rothbart’s transformation into the Great Animal?

Q: In Swan Princess and the Enchanted Treasure, Rothbart and Zelda each say a spooky spell to put the Forbidden Arts inside a crystal sphere. What was the inspiration behind this spell? Did it come from a particular language?
Brian Nissen: My memory is I kind of made an incantation salad, i.e. I looked up the Latin words for a few things then threw in a few of my own bits of gibberish and tossed!

Q: How did director Richard Rich come up with the idea for an animated adaptation of The Swan Lake? I heard he first pitched the idea while he was working at Disney, but got turned down. Is that true?
Richard Rich: There was nothing in development at Disney during my time there. Brian Nissen and I wanted to do a fairytale and searched for one and our search led us to the fairytale the ballet was based on. We researched many versions and knew we need to find an approach that would make this unique unto itself. There are similarities and yet many new ideas that were not part of any version of the fairy tale help bring it to life and gave it a freshness that seems to have lasted through the years.

Q: What on earth is the effect "6.8" during the song, No More Mr. Nice guy??
Richard Rich: During production of The Swan Princess in January 1994, there was an earthquake that hit just outside the Los Angeles area, now known as the Northridge Earthquake. It was a magnitude 6.8 quake that caused extensive damage throughout the area. After seismic analysis, it was downgraded to a 6.7 quake but the number 6.8 had already been included in the film as an inside tidbit to current events!

Q: What was the design inspiration for Odette and Odile's dress?
Steve Gordan: My inspiration for all the costuming for The Swan Princess was based on Edith Head's work for Hollywood-style medieval type films. Like The Court Jester. If I recall right I initially designed her original dress to be more off-the-shoulder than what it turned out to be and I believe Rick pulled me back some, but when it came time for Odile's dress it seemed more appropriate to go a little more daring.

Q: Odette's dress is a beautiful green and white. I know white was chosen to symbolize the swan, but is there a special reason why green was chosen?
A: We asked animator Steven Gordon and he said, while many people were involved with the decision of Odette's wardrobe colors, all of the colors were inspired by the lake. The greenery, the blue water, and even the white reflection of the moon all played a part in the design. Slowly through the films, Odette's dress color shifts from the original white and green to shades of blue just as the colors of Swan Lake changes with the seasons.

Q: Why does Odette wear a blue dress on the front of the second Swan Princess film when the original dress is white?
A: Because Princess Odette has both a white and a blue version of the dress in her closet! As many royals around the globe, Odette requires an appropriate outfit for every occasion she finds herself in. While her beautiful flowing white dress is right at home in a ballroom, she needs a pants and boots outfit for adventuring, a costume for performing magic shows, and everything in between. We were inspired by the runway shows of fashion month to make you Odette's complete fashion show below! All of her animated outfits are included alongside many of the costumes in real life versions. We are sure Odette will continue to collect outfits for the many needs of the royal events she attends.

Q: Where did you get the idea and concept of the Great Animal?
A: There are many variations to the story of Swan Lake that have been told over time. In the 1877 version, an owl carries away Odette's crown from the lake, resulting in her death. Rothbart was an established antagonist in the Tchaikovsky Ballet of Swan Lake and primarily shape-shifted into an owl-like creature. This was carried over into the Swan Princess in the form of a large bird-of-prey. The anatomy of the Great Animal appears to be inspired from the Flying Fox, one of the largest breeds of megabat in the world. In the behind the scenes featurette, there is some insight into the sound effects used for the Great Animal. An altered lion’s roar, a metal screech, and a higher pitched cry of a raven were the sounds used.

Q: One of my favorite characters in the Swan Princess series was in the third film, Whizzer! I have been waiting for Whizzer to return to the series but he never has. Why is Whizzer only in one movie and will he be returning?
A: We agree that Whizzer was a fun character in the third Swan Princess film. However, neither writer Brian Nissen, or director Richard Rich, ever felt a good connection to the character. They have been asked many times if Whizzer will come back and the team has seriously considered it. But Brian and Richard have never been able to successfully incorporate Whizzer into the story again and don't think it will happen in the future.

Q: Is the character Whizzer based on some sort of Dom DeLuise characters?
A: Our writer Brian says "I don't specifically remember channeling Dom Deluise, but I was a big fan of his. Dom Deluise was everywhere in the 70’s and Whizzer is a dead ringer for Dom's nervous, put-upon characters. Good catch!"

Q: What was the relation between Rothbart and King William? Did they know each other outside of Rothbart's attempts to take over the kingdom?
A: Actually, yes! There’s a small hint at the beginning of the original 1994 movie, when Rothbart says ‘I'm not through with you yet, Willy”. As well as, King William going easy and choosing to banish Rothbart instead of executing him. The Mystery of the Enchanted Treasure DVD Special Features confirms the relationship. In Princess Odette's storytime, she refers to him as her "evil uncle Rothbart". So Rothbart and King William were actually brothers!

Q: On some of the theatrical trailers and posters, there was a mouse along with the other animal friends, were they planned as a character? If so, what was their name?
A: Sort of! While in the script they didn’t have a name, you do see him as the mouse that frightens Bromley in the woods. The scene begins with Bromley and Derek searching for the Great Animal. Remembering the creature "is not what it seems" a frightened Bromley aims his bow and arrow first at a dragonfly and then at the unsuspecting mouse. When the mouse squeaks, Bromley screams and runs away. We love that this cute mouse makes a cameo appearance on the movie posters!

Q: Where did the title ‘Chamberg’ come from for the Chamberg Daily?
A: From the map taken by the animals from Rothbart’s castle. This map is how Odette discovers where she is being held. Chamberg is the name of Derek’s Kingdom. There is a town in Germany called Schaumburg with a rich history. It was founded in the 12th century, during the Middle Ages. The landscape includes amazingly dramatic castles and beautiful lakes. This was a perfect model for our story.

Q: What was the name of King William's kingdom? I don't believe we hear any kingdom mentioned except Chamberg.
A: We took a deep dive into Swan Princess geography to find you some answers. Though King William's kingdom was absorbed by Queen Uberta's Chamberg after Derek and Odette's marriage, before that it was its own country. The Kingdom of Chamberg, as you may have previously read, was inspired by a historic town in Germany. King William and Queen Aubri's kingdom is the fictional Riga Kingdom inspired by the medieval city in Latvia. Riga Castle, built in the 1300s, can be seen in the photo above. Riga is the world's largest wooden frame medieval structured town and was the site of the first ever Christmas tree. I wonder if that is where Chamberg got their Ornament Day tradition from? They also have both a port and land access to Germany which is why you can see William and Odette arrive to Chamberg by both ship and by horseback. If you've been keeping track on a map this puts Rothbart's Swan Lake right in the middle at the Southern border of Poland.

Q: Was Rogers a butler or valet/musician advisor?
A: Lord Rogers is a member of the Queen's Royal Court, historically a group of lesser royals who live at the castle to be friends with and advise the Queen. Roger's and Uberta's close friendship, and in the later films romance, allowed him to also take on the roles of musician, inventor, and educator to both Prince Derek and Alise. The castle at Chamberg just wouldn't be the same without Lord Rogers crazy antics keeping things exciting!

Q: What was the inspiration for Lord Rogers' character and mannerisms?
A: The inspiration for the way Lord Rogers moves and talks came from the original voice actor that played Lord Rogers, Mark Harelik! The Richard Rich loved the way he moved and emoted during voice recording so the animation was mirrored after him.

Q: Do the alligators who live in the moat at Swan Lake have names?
A: They do! The original script did not name the gators but the artists who painted them did. The names given to them during production of the film, and written on the model art cels of them, are Skinny and Fatty. We think these adorable names make the "Chompers" even more cute than scary, though we doubt JeanBob would agree!

Q: What is the chef's name in The Swan Princess? In the earlier films, he is referred to as Ferdinand and later he is called Frederick?
A: That would be because the chef's name is Ferdinand Frederick III. He comes from a long line of chefs before him and he can never quite decide if he likes using his first or middle name best.

Q: Why isn't Bromley in the later Swan Princess films?
A: Because as the storylines became more intricate more focus needed to be placed on other characters so his story arc was phased out. We like to believe he met a beautiful baker and settled down in a village where nothing dangerous or surprising ever happens and he can entertain the other villagers with tales of his many heroics.

Q: Were any of the characters in the Swan Princess films inspired by celebrities or real life people?
A: This answer comes from Swan Princess Producer Seldon Young! In the upcoming film The Swan Princess A Fairytale is Born you will notice that Queen Uberta is affectionately called Bertie as a nickname. This is a special hidden Easter egg because Bertie is the name of Seldon's mother. He added the name to honor her!

Q: How long was Odette under Rothbart’s spell?
A: Roughly a year. As seen in some storyboards of an alternate version of ‘Practice Practice Practice’. The line was cut from the movie but it still remains true that Odette is missing for about a year, give or take maybe a month or so for the moon cycle to happen how it did in the movie.

Q: If Derek and Odette were married and crowned, why are they still called Prince and Princess?
A: Simple answer? Uberta hasn’t retired yet. With the kingdoms combined, Uberta has the majority rule as Queen over both kingdoms (which now could be a singular kingdom I suppose). Derek and Odette are simply called Prince and Princess until she’s ready to properly retire. Which she keeps saying she will eventually do; but it’s hard for her to let go. She loves being Queen!

Q: It's shown at the beginning of the first movie that Derek is a little older than Odette since when she's a newborn baby he's old enough to walk. Exactly what is the age difference between Odette and Derek and how old were they in each of the stages of their life during the song This is My Idea?
A: At the beginning of the film when Prince Derek gives Princess Odette her famous swan heart locket, it was the summer after Odette's birth. She was born in November so she was around six months old. Derek was three and a half years old. When Derek, Bromley and Odette had their accident at the treehouse, Odette was 11 and Derek was 14. This makes Derek's age at the time of the marriage proposal 21 years and Odette 18 years.

Q: How many years had Odette and Derek been married when they adopted Alise?
A: Quite a few. Swan Princess and the Secret of the Castle took place during Derek and Odette's first wedding anniversary. Later, were the events of the third Swan Princess film. The Forbidden Arts needed to die off in order for them to become the ghost they appeared as in The Royal Family Tale, the fifth film in the series as well as the film in which Alise was adopted. So at the very minimum 2-5 years!

Q: It's very rare for an animated princess to wear pants. Who decided to include Princess Odette wearing pants in A Royal Family Tale and what was the reasoning?
A: Director Richard Rich wanted Princeess Odette to wear pants. Odette is often involved in adventurous scenes that include chases. Rick wanted Odette to be more efficient at riding a horse and running. Odette is also a Princess that is less focused on her external beauty and doesn't always need to wear a dress.

Q: Do Derek and Odette ever plan on having another child?
A: Derek and Odette are open to the idea of more children but do the feel the need for it as of yet. A lot of people think they can not have kids but it's more that they have been so busy. It's difficult to find time to even consider having a child. They do have a lot of enchanted royal adventures to carry out!

Q: What kind of flowers were in the scene where Odette is first introduced at the enchanted castle and JeanBob tries to pole-vault over the moat on a cat tail?
A: The flowers are purple Calla Lilies. These beautiful flowers are native to Africa, so we think it must be because of the Forbidden Arts magic they were able to grow at Swan Lake.

Q: Why is the animation in the ending scene so much different than the rest of the movie?
A: Because the water is CGI! While the rest of the film, and the background, of this scene were all hand drawn, producers decided to use a brand new technology to computer generate the water. It really makes the water sparkle and look so realistic. The few seconds in this scene were $45,000 of the film's budget!

Q: How was the title "The Swan Princess" decided?
A: During production the film was called Swan Lake because it was based on the Swan Lake fairy tale. The Swan Lake was a complicated title to have ownership of because so many movies, books and shows have the same title (including, of course, the ballet Swan Lake by Tchaikovsky). The production team came up with many options, such as: The Prince and the Swan. These titles were then presented to focus groups that had watched the finished movie. The focus groups chose "The Swan Princess". So technically it was an audience-driven choice.

Q: Is there anyone who’s been part of the Swan Princess for every single movie?
A: Director Richard Rich, Writer Brian Nissen, and Producers, Jared F. Brown and Seldon Young have been involved in all ten of The Swan Princess films. Not only have the leaders of the team remained the same but both Steve Vinovich (voice of Puffin) and Mark Harelick (voice of Lord Rogers), have continued as voice actors throughout the series. One of the most important team members of the series is Joe Compana, the Editor who has completed all ten Swan Princess films.
