Although, you may be best to wait: word is that a super boxset with extra features (and TARDIS packaging) will be out in November.

To be honest, this news does not surprise me in the slightest, I had expected that it would be released soon. I may consider picking this up on DVD although as you say if I do I will wait for the complete series, and naturally unitl the price has dropped considerably!

It appears the first 2 discs will be out, when the series is still on air! It's only 13 episodes!

We never saw Clive dead though, I know he got shot but this could be like the many deaths of CSM in the X files. We'll have to wait and see I guess.

Dang it I was hoping for a good Who concert.

This is great news for international WHO fans, as the DVDs will likely be out long before we get the episodes screened here. At present, the ABC - who are currently screening every original episode in order, and are up to the second half of the Tom Baker era - have yet to purchase the rights to the new series, claiming they want to see an episode first. Fools!

I'll definitely hold off for the planned box set of the whole series, as I have plenty of older episodes to catch up on in the meantime.

Oh Doctor Who! In Canada the premiere is April 5th... I found out less than a week ago.

I don't know if I'll get the DVDs but the original from what I have seen over the years was certainly enjoyable.

Cool, I will deffinately be renting these.

Well that's kinda crappy unless it's an April Fool's joke. This year I keep seeing April Fool's jokes and it's not even April 1st yet.

I didn't see this coming but of course I just got into new Doctor Who fever only a week ago.

In other news... Two days ago I got the new TV Guide (Canadian version) with Doctor Who on the cover!

No he's quit. The newly announced X-Mas special will be his last episode.

I'm kind of bummed. I mean, he knew what he was getting himself into, but then again, coverage of new WHO over here has been well above what even I was expecting, so maybe all the hype and media crazyness just put him off.

I'm more annoyed at the BBC for not getting him to sign a 2 year contract (at least) upfront!

Well, that sucks. I was really looking forward to a long run of Chris Eccleston on tele. We haven't even got plans to screen the new series here yet, and it is already going to be his last! From what I've seen so far, he could have been really good in the role.

My sentiments mirror 2099net's - it seems foolish for BBC to not sign him to a second season up front. After all, in both films and TV, it seems to be standard these days to sign up for at least one "sequel". And as 2099 said already, CE had to know what he was in for. Sometimes these things work out for the best - Star Trek Voyager saw the lead actress drop out after one episode (which wasn't aired), but Kate Mulgrew made it her own. However, this is more frustrating as he IS sticking with it for a while. Only the other night a special screened saying how silly it was to start the series with a regeneration, because you'd get used to Paul McGann, only to see him disappear 10 minutes later. Here, we settle into CE after 13 episodes only to see him off.

Call Richard E Grant! He was born to play the Doctor (and already has in a way...). Any chance of resurrecting Paul McGann? I like a few of the suggestions they make at the bottom of the article too...

Can't help but feel disappointed, although I look forward to this bold new direction in Doctor Who:

She should also play Professor Umbridge in HP and the Order of the Phoenix!

But Jen looks nothing like Umbridge! I hope Dawn and Jen do a doc who send up when they do a new show.

Stephen Fry is who I always thought should play the Doctor but it would be good to see a woman play the role for a change.

Well, I know he's not British, but I always thought Dan Ackroyd would make a good Doctor. Failing that Alan Davis I guess. It would be cool if Mark Gatiss finally got his dream job too! (The Gatiss scripted episode is on next week )

And the Doctor should never be a woman. Sorry. I wouldn't mind a WHO spin-off though with a female lead. Perhaps Iris Wildtyme from the books could get a series in the future? If they ever want to being Romana back, Jennifer Saunders would be ideal!

I wonder how the news of Eccleston quitting will affect unrealised International sales?

Perhaps we can see a story set in the near past, which would show Clive's first meeting with The Doctor. After all, something must have happened to spark his obesssion. He seemed such a good character to waste.

Christopher Eccleston was never intended to go past the first series. Russell T Davies wants to do a regeneration thing as soon as possible, sees it as integral to the series.

David Tennant is confirmed to appear in the Christmas Special.

However, the BBC may do a bait and switch. Bill Nighy and Chiwetel Ejoifor are both up for the lead, appearing at the end of the Christmas Special, and then into the second series.

The Eccleston leaving news and Tennant speculation has been deliberately revealed now as a spoiler to the Tony-Blair-on-Ant-And-Dec news. Expect a lot of this, the BBC are playing with the media in a way they rarely have before, with Doctor Who and the newspapers are willing to play along as they get excellent content, news, features and opinion column matter. Expect more as the Dalek episode approaches, Spoiler:
and a lot more before the last two Dalek War episodes.

The David Tennant goss will also help publicity for the BBC1 showing of Casanova, written by Russel T Davies, in which he is absolutely excellent and will wipe away unfortunate Blackpool memories.

Four DVDs will be released for the first TV series, in May, June, July and August with a DVD box set of the series with lots of features in October.

See, it's all been stage managed. However, being as most of the WHO merchandise isn't scheduled to appear until just before Christmas, I really don't see how having a regeneration at Christmas will help sales

The October DVD boxset will feature: Commentaries, Deleted Scenes, Russell T Davies' own Video Diary and Special Effects comparison shots, plus much more. It will apparently not feature the BBC3 Dr Who Confidential documentary series that most people were expecting. It is expected to come in a special TARDIS metal tin (just like the BBC's previous traditional Dr Who VHS tins/boxsets that were released round about the same time each year). The BBC are determined to make the series set one of their most comprehensive DVD releases to date (which, given releases like thier Red Dwarf, League of Gentlemen and most of the 'standard' Classic Who DVDs - especially last year's 'Who Boxset' the excellent Lost In Time collection - is really saying something.)

Yes, it is all a bit baffling, but I get that sense of it all being prearranged too. As you pointed out above, it is really going to send international marketing into a spin (especially given that some territories, like ours, still haven't decided if they want to pick it up. If a major network gets it, it will debut at 7:30, move slowly back to 11:30pm, and then die a quiet death at 1:00am).

Well, I guess that is the best thing about the new series and the marketing machine to go with it - kick-ass DVDs. I imagine this one will have full BBC support, rather than just the Restoration Team guys performing their thankless job in a basement somewhere. That doco was really good though - if it was the one Netty pointed me to on the net the other night - and is a nice overview of Doctor Who history for the newbies (and I haven't been into the Doctor all that long, so it was partly educational for me too).

Sounds like David Tennant is locked in for Season 2, if he is due to appear in the Xmas special, but I'd still like to see Richard E Grant, or - as per 2099net's suggestion - Mark Gatiss.

I just think David Tennant is ordinary looking to play the doctor I want something interesting, how about a Black or Asian doctor?

Just watched Episode two and it wasn't as good as last weeks, but I must admit at times it was like watching the "Rose Tyler featuring Doctor Who" show, Billie is just a bit too good at times. Acting is Chris' job, Billie is marvalous for someone whos admitted she's eventually going to make music again (why?).

Next weeks episode look brilliant though.
