Wow ... who here doesn't/didn't have POWER?

I know, I know. If you don't have power now chances are you won't be replying
This is pretty crazy stuff going on in the northeast.
I'm in Indianapolis and thus far we have NOT been affected by the power outages, but the scenes from NYC are eerily similar to what we saw on 9.11 ... tens of thousands of people heading out of Manhattan on foot.
I keep telling myself not to think bad thoughts, but this could be the perfect setup for a major terrorist strike in any of the affected cities

well, on CNN they "confirmed" that this is not a terrorist attack... so I dunno.. it'd be a kick in the "officials" faces if it was.. but also sad!

You know, I always did wonder whatever happened to the power "outages" and rolling blackouts California was supposed to get two years ago due to "high energy costs"....
Now I know where they went.

I can't call my brother in New York City to see if he's ok: his cell phone doesn't work. Too bad he doesn't have amateur radio communications like me.

At least it wasnt a terrorist attack! anyone had their candles and flashlights in hand? i hope everyone that lives in the northeast that comes to this forum is ok.

I think my brother is ok. I'll have to call his cell phone when the cell towers have power. It's too bad that I don't have his landline number. I feel sorry for the elderly in the heat and other folks stuck in subways.

I lost power. I don't even have air conditioning or anything, but it still sucked (no fan, limited food, stuff going bad or warm, and worst of all, no Boy Meets World reruns
).
Honestly, it seems like summer never passes without us losing power at some point. In some ways, the fact that so many people were affected was good, since power came back within 13 hours or so. Whereas, if it was just my neighborhood on account of a thunderstorm, it might very well be longer.

I've heard that power companies are planning rolling blackouts in the Northeast.

LOL!!!
gotta get my Monsters, Inc movie out again!!!!! DIDN"T even think about that at a time like this.
Must call Disney and tell them to release ALL movies so we can LAUGH!!! that should fix the problem!

The restoration of power was merely a tease for some in that city and for an unlucky swath of New York, where the electricity crackled and then quickly ceased. Upstate utilities — shortly after restoring power — were ordered to initiate rolling blackouts as a conservation measure.

If overloaded conditions reach a point where equipment might be damaged, utilities will divert demand to other substations or cut power to commercial customers with "interruptible service" contracts, which offer lower rates in exchange for the right to shut off their power in times of need.
If those efforts do not adequately reduce electricity demand, then utilities resort to "rolling blackouts" or "rolling brownouts" to reduce the overall demand until the heat passes or demand subsides. Rolling blackouts and brownouts last a couple hours and prevent the whole electrical system from being damaged.

The U.S./Canada Power Outage Task Force issued the Aug. 14, 2003 Sequence of Events at noon today. While no conclusions are drawn at this point, the outline does paint a pretty good picture of what happened and when it happened.

Last Thursday, Hurricane Isabel blew a tree and some power lines down near my house. The power came back today at 5:30 PM.
