Your 2005 New Release DVD Buying List (April-June)

by AwallaceUNC
I think it's good to have these overlap on the third month, because everyone is always looking at least a month into the future for DVD releases, so what good does it do to end on one month? At this point, I'm starting to loosely budgeting my DVD purchases into the month of May, so I'm sure plenty of you are too.
By now, April is all locked in and I'd say that if there's any more announcements coming for May, they'll have to come very soon. Early June is starting to fill up too, though there's still a lot to be announced. Therefore, feel free to update.
I also include CD purchases in smaller font, as I don't buy very many of them and they impact my DVD budget.
April
26 - Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events 2-Disc CE ~ $20
26 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season 2 ~ $12 (depending on when I watch S1)
April Total ~ $20-$32
May
3 - National Treasure - Purchased for $14.99
3 - Pocahontas 2-Disc SE - Purchased for $10.99
3 - Amy Grant: Rock of Ages... Hymns & Faith (CD) - Purchased for $9.97
17 - Pete & Pete S1 ~ $18
17 - The Mask SE ~ $15
17 - Clarissa Explains It All S1 ~ $20
24 - The Aviator (possible blind buy) ~ $15
24 - Fat Actress S1 - $25
31 - The Late Shift ~ $12
31 - The Parent Trap SE ~ $14
May Total ~ $26-$118
June
7 - Matilda SE ~ $14
7 - Star Trek Insurrection CE ~ $13
7 - Father of the Bride SE ~ $14 (possible purchase)
7 - Sling Blade SE ~ $14 (possible purchase)
14 - Tarzan II ~ $20
14 - Hitch ~ $17
28 - Even Stevens Movie ~ $14
28 - Cadet Kelly ~ $14 (possible purchase)
June Total (So Far) ~ $41- $197
...Updated to seriously scale back my budget to allow for travel plans this summer.... aye aye aye... updated for even more scaling back on 05/05/05. I miss having an income.

I'm really trying to restrict myself to a few in the next quarter, as I'm saving for a holiday in September (Disneyland, here I come).
However, there are a few I want to buy, others I will simply get as review discs (Green indicates I have it on order already...):
April:
06 - The Incredibles
07 - Dr Who: Horror at Fang Rock
12 - DiG
12 - Magnum, P.I: The Second Season
May:
05 - Dr Who: Mind Robbers
19 - Star Trek: Enterprise (possible purchase)
19 - Star Trek: First Contact (Aussie release)
23 - Batman: Volume 3
25 - Seinfeld Season 4 (Aussie release)
And that is truly it. At least, that is all I plan

Awallaceunc, I notice that you put a price besides each title. If you pay that amount of money for those titles you are being ripped off bigtime.
I buy most of my titles including those you listed at either Best Buy or Circuit City for a lot less than those prices you listed. You will find it easier to get these titles in your budget if you buy them at either of these stores. Check their adds each week or go to their websites to find out how much they will be charging.
Please don't buy on line. It is too dangerous to put that credit card number out there, no matter what they tell you about it being secure. There are too many techno-hackers out there that can get that number.

I actually do buy almost everything from Best Buy (often with price matches from Circuit City, Target, etc.). I check all the circulars and deals each week. I only occasionally buy online, but feel secure when I do, but that's a whole 'nother issue.
The price marks I put out beside are what I expect to find at those stores, though I often err on the side of pricey in order to cover my budget. Something like Pocahontas will of course be priced down to $14.99 or so, but then a title like Meet The Fockers might well be kept at $19.99. Not every new release gets a great price. Same with the TV shows... some sets get marked down big time but Touched By An Angel, for example, didn't with Season 1, so I'm not counting on it for Season 2 either. And in the rare case that I don't know what to expect in terms of price, I go with Amazon's price, which typically isn't all that unreasonable. Which ones do you think I'm way overestimating?

Yup! Although, just how many movies called Matilda are there?

Either way, Columbia's releasing this to ride on the Roald Dahl wave that'll come with the theatrical release of Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. What remains to be seen, though, is if this Matilda: SE will be in widescreen. It's been post-poned twice (first in January 2004, then August 2004), and each time Columbia said that it would be pan and scan (aka fullscreen, blegh). I'm really hoping that they've changed their minds by now considering that the UK version of the SE is in widescreen.
