Mulan not good enough?

I'm a collector and often times I like my collections to match especially with DVD collections. So far all Platinum DVD's ( except Snow White) and all the special editions ones like Alice in Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty etc. All came in cardboard slip-covers that opened up like books. Now the new Bambi also has it but Mulan just had a crappy slip-cover, why? Why did Disney do this?

not too many features for the movie to make a "book" on the cover? I'm just guessing..
but I never noticed the book slipcover versus regular slipcover..
i'll check when i go home tonight..and i'll put my opinion on it too!

I too wonder why they did that, afterall Mulan
is one of the best Disney movies to be released in the 90s, in my opinion anyway..
But oh well it's no biggie, atleast it has a slipcover
I guess it just a Platinum thing

Disney has no clear-cut reasoning to go with some of the things they do.
And this is why
Mulan was released with a slipcover that doesn't open up.

I've always loved Mulan. The just past winter/Christmas was when I became a Disney enthusiast in large part because of Mulan (I saw it then), and just the movie.

Disney's marketing is pretty random, I mean they started the Masterpiece line and dropped it after 1 release. They don't necessarily know what they are doing in that sense. Plus its not like the Mulan SE had a plethora of features.

Yeah they are so inconstitant in their design. Look at the recent WD Treasures...

I personally don't see the big difference between having a slip cover that opens and dosn't.

I like the ones that open much more, but whatever; no biggie

Because all of the movies that you mention
EXCEPT Mulan are based upon a single great work of literature (i.e. a
BOOK!). Mulan is based upon a Chinese legend, but not one central piece of literature.

That is an erroneous statement. Mulan is based on a piece of prominent Chinese literature, a poem. Yes, it's not a book, but literature constitutes poetry and plays. Also, The Lion King got a book slipcover and it is not based on a book/piece of literature, no matter how hard these Shakespeare people want it to be.

It will be interesting too see if Pocahontas will have a slip cover opening like a book.... or..... if it will be like Mulan..... Hmmmmm...

What I find really bizarre is that one of the international releases (I think the Hong Kong one, not sure) actually does open up like a book. Someone posted the image of it somewhere on these boards. It resembles the back cover a lot, only there more screenshots of the bonus material, and the center image (if I remember correctly) was of Mulan putting her helmet on in front of a window with her back towards us (like the teaser poster).

I'll defer to your authority here regarding the poem of Mulan (it's still not a book, though!).
I completely disagree with you regarding The Lion King. The story is definitely Hamlet.

Probably not, since Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll was a (drum roll, please)
book!

It most definittely is! Even on the bonus fetaures on the DVD they discuss how they adapted the story and even at times there were direct quotes from the book in the film!

I don't exactly remember 101 Dalmatians or Lady and the Tramp being based on books but they are going to have a book slip covers because they are Platinum editions... other than that these things are random and Disney marketing wouldn't care whether it were based on a book or not if it will have a book slipcover. and Mulan is a great piece of literature you're just western so you don't get it.
And The Lion King may have some elements of Hamlet but the basic premise of The Lion King to begin with was "Bambi in Africa" and just built up upon that, you're making the same erroneous arguments as the Kimba enthusiasts.
Mulan probably didn't get a book cover because the extras weren't exactly as abundant as the other SE's and PE's, they could afford to do away with the opening slipcover and list it all down at the back of the cover.

In case you wondered,
101 Dalmatians was based on a book:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... ce&s=books
Lady and the Tramp was based upon an obscure short story by Ward Green (it says so in the film credits). Both will probably get book slipcovers, as all the Platinums in the US have had them.
Speaking of slipcovers, does anybody think that Disney should try a type of slipcover like in this very bad diagram that I've drawn on Paint (though I've given the sample DVD a nice message)?

Oh ok so 101 was based on a book...cool
anyway, yeah that kind of slipcover would make it more interesting
