I've read the UD reviews of both DVD editions of Davy Crockett over the last few months, but I'm asking for advice on which one I should buy.

Do I attempt to buy the out-of-print Disney Treasure, or purchase the 2-movie set released in 2004 (I recently saw a WalMart shelf label saying THIS set wouldn't be around much longer....)?

I tend to go after original versions of something -- but I won't go overboard... I'll take what I can get! The Treasure contained the orig. Disneyland TV episodes; the 2-movie set offered the theatrical versions of those episodes. The UD review of the Treasure doesn't mention any kind of TV intros by Walt, the inclusion of which would clinch my decision for the Treasure edition.

Those of you who watched both TV and movie versions in the 50s: what would you suggest? Those of you who have both DVD offerings: what are the merits/drawbacks of both?

The Treasure set contains the complete TV episodes including Walt's introductions.

The only advantage of the two movie collection is that you'll get the "Lone Chipmunks" cartoon which isn't available on any other DVD.

And, thanks, Anders, for telling me that Walt's introductions are included on the Treasures versions. I don't remember any mention of these on the UD reviews -- maybe I missed it. His introductions are a major factor in my decision (along with the pricing I might come across online....).

Still, I'd sure like to hear from those that watched both formats, either in the '50s or by way of these DVDs.

The treasures set is the most complete version. If nothing more the theatrical ones are cropped cause the OAR is "fullscreen". So I would go with that. I have mine autographed by Fess Parker http://www.ultimatedisney.com/forum/vie ... php?t=3368

Not really, because the theatrical ones are 'fullscreen' as well.

Nope, although the movie poster inside the Treasures tin says "Widescreen" so perhaps they were theatrically exhibited with the top and bottom missing. But the DVD correctly presents it in fullscreen.

Still, they were originally aired as a TV show, therefore that's how I like them.
